ethicalstrategy
looks like the old 1-2-2-1-2-1-1-1 formation! I'd go for the same except mikel holding (not the fast bowler). The only way I can get Essien in the team is in place of joey.

TomP
Judging from pre-season and the Pompey match, it seems to me like Chelsea under Scolari are going to take a step away from strict (Mourinho-style) "formations" as such. I think the back four will be fairly stable (2 centre backs and two very attack minded overlapping fullbacks), but as far as the midfield and attack go, it is going to be a lot less of the strict 1 holding player, 2 midfielders, 2 wingers, 1 striker, or tips of the diamond we have been used to, and it will be a case of picking the best 6 players available and giving them a very big licence to attack when and where they want to. If you look at the Pompey match - it seemed to me like all four of Lampard, Deco, Ballack and Mikel were getting forward joining in the attack, with others dropping in behind them to cover. Add to that, Joe Cole was playing as a striker, but dropping off Anelka back into midfield. No wonder the Pomey defence had absolutely no idea who to mark. As far as our best eleven go - on paper, you would say it is the team that started against Pompey, but swapping Mikel and Anelka for Essien and Drogba. However, i'm not sure how you could drop either of them based on their current form.

blizeH
But technically, the midfield was narrow against Portsmouth and look how that worked out. We didn't have any true wingers on the pitch yet still looked immense; with Bosingwa and Cole throwing themselves forward at every opportunity, I don't think we need to rely on wide men so much, especially if our central midfielders drift out there a bit too. andy
I think two things that were brilliant against Portsmouth ( I am not sure he can employee these tactics every game) but everyone flurished in this formation. When the wing backs bombed forward Mickel dropped back into to a 3 man defense.. A stoke of genious Mickel was brilliant and Portsmouth hardly had a sniff at goal. This is typical Brazil tactic and luckly we are one of the few teams who can carry this off. Great news for us is that we have two exceptional mifdielders to do this Essien and Mickel. Second was a midfield with players who like to be creative. Lamps, Ballack, Deco and Joe Cole. They interachnaged, touches got forward got back.. all there natural game and they florished... ( I said in my MOM post.. Lamps can't play with Gerrard.. no but he can play with Ballack, Deco, Cole.. funny that ???) think the only thing I will change is our unplayble front man Mr Drogba... Essien will need to fight for his place from Mickel in my opinion. Although he can also rotate with Ballack. exciting times ! Cech Boswinga Ricky JT Cole Mickel Deco Lamps Ballack Cole Drogs
Sheva
I like the look of the formation we played against pompey, I think it's key to play deco/lamps/ballack together with either essien or mikel holding. The creativity is great, i kinda see why we are going for Robinho aswell, to play in the position Joe plays. Let's say Joe gets injured, who else can play it? Malouda is too much of a wide man for me, Kalou is a good shout but has he got the quality to fit that role? Last but not least SWP, i honestly think he has no future at the club and needs to move to the likes of Villa/Man City to enjoy first team football and get his career back on track. Robinho would be perfect for the role Joe played on Sunday. Im not saying get rid of Joe but i just don't see anyone with the quality to play in that position like Joe did, i love the formation Scolari plays. Deco / Lamps / Ballack / Mikel or Essien That's just scary and whoever is playing upfront will be bagging in goals with the quality of passes, however im not sure Drogs is the type of player to fit the upfront role. Anelka is good at linking up playing, Drogba is good at holding up play. Who knows, im just looking forward to an exciting season.

ethicalstrategy
I suspect it will be Felipe's too just as soon as Essien and Drogba are fit to return !!! That would be a real waste of Essien though. He is not as good at that role as Obi anyway. I like --------------------------Cech Boswinga-----Carvalho------Terry-------Cole --------------------------Obi --------------Ballack----------Lampard ---------Essien----------------------Deco ------------------------Drogba But with the same rotation that we saw on Sunday and with the fullbacks bombing on. That is a starting line up which has world class players in every position. Everyone of them would get in to the starting line up at any other club in the world.
