Beckham To Milan

Wow, totally did not see this one coming. I knew he was training with them, but I assumed all that noise Milan made about it was Galliani flapping his gums again.

I agree that its a good move for Beckham. Here is my reasoning

-Good move for his legacy because, as Gem says, he has now played in the three biggest leagues in the world, for three of their biggest clubs. Assuming he isnt a total failure at age 33 in Italy, im sure he will go some way toward salvaging the iconic image of Beckham the energetic, hard working leader that he had with England in 2002, Man U, and with Madrid when his time there was at an end. I personally liked those Beckhams, because when they got on the pitch they were 100% business. Nevermind all the private life circus.

-Good move for sporting reasons. I bet his skills are far from razor sharp, but I am confident Beckham still has "it", and can put in a couple more years at the top level. Italy is a slower, more cerebral league. Beckham was never a player that relied on speed or guile, but on hard work, effort, and precise passing/crosses. I think Italy will let him show that off again. I thought a few years ago that, after his time in Spain was over, he would go on to Italy with some team glad to have him. I was hoping it would be Milan if he did.

- Good move for Milan. As its been said, shirt sales, boost of the profile of the club, boost for the team now as they are starting to rattle off a few victories, and gives them another, albeit old, weapon in the squad. Also, imagine the atmosphere for youngins like Bonera, Pato, Paloschi, etc. to have the likes of Beckham, Maldini, and Shevchenko to be mentored by in training? And im sure that extra revenue if they get him signed up longterm and capitalize off the marketing, can revive Milan's fiscal fortunes.

Also, these guys wont ever play together, but think about this

-----Shevchenko---Ronaldo

----------------Kaka

Ronaldinho-----Pirlo------Beckham

Seven years ago, this kind of team would have literally been the stuff of dreams. It was so close to happening :D

Why do you say that Bluenut? I'm sure he wouldn't admit it, but he made a mistake in going to the States. I can't really knock him for wanting to keep playing at the top level for as long as he can.

Last week for example, he was on the pitch at Wembley launching his own brand of fish-fingers and ready to eat noodles. He already has is own brand of clothing, various sponship deals for chocolate etc in the far east, brylcream, pepsi, gillette, and addidas love the return on their shirts with his No23 on the back.

Why would AC Milan want another player the wrong side of 32 added to their already ageing squad? Shirt sales perhaps? (Another Addidas club BTW)

I think this transfer would be more about who he is, than what he can bring to Milan in football terms. I think he's showing professionalism of the highest order to want to maintain his fitness levels so he can prolong his international career albeit as a squad mamber rather than 1st choice, and get extra caps, but the decision to go to the US was a costly mistake in the first place. He chose the dollar over the last few years of his career, noone else, well perhaps his skinny wife might had something to say but if you look at what he's endorsed over his career, it's not like he needed the money is it?

After training with Arsenal last year, this year he'll sign part time for Milan, what next year, a few months mid-season in Japan?

I think hes just become a slave to his own hype - now added to by the joint branding with his talentless wife

am i alone in thinking beckham could and should have done more with his football career. if he hadnt got involved in the beckham marketing machine he could have been an even better player and concentrated on his career. unfortunately he will be remembered as much for his off field persona as his footballing talent, maybe even more so. its a shame as i do honestly think he was a wonderfull football with an incredibly talented right foot.

I think the man has had the best of both worlds, fair play to him for exploiting his image and expanding his brand it's the perfect example of how to make a little go a long way.

Hypothetical question here:

How would everyone feel if Joe Cole decided to spend the close season (English summer) plying his trade playing for LA Galaxy or a team in Australia to earn a bit extra on the side while his team mates took the summer off? Surely it's the same as Beckham using the US break to play in Europe?

Good luck to him, but he'd better come back playing as good if not better than when he left.

How about he returns with a broken leg?

I just think Milan are getting a bit ahead of themselves here, I'm sure LA Galaxy would have something to say about one of their player representing another club, especiall one with the marketability of Beckham

Sorry just skimmed this thread so may have misunderstood but from skimming it it appears people are thinking he has left LA Galaxy to go to Milan and will not be going back to Galaxy. I think he is just on loan to Milan whilst the American league is in its close season and he will be going back there after there for the new season.

Sydney could use him.

Then we'd have the two best Coles in the world.

it's not about earning extra cash on the side though is it? It is about playing at a high level to enable him to keep playing for his country. I admire him for that. I must admit I don't really keep up with all the off field stuff. I am really not that interested. I had no idea about the pre match stuff you mentioned and couldn't tell you anything much about his wife or her activities.

I know that he made an error going to the states but it was at a time when McClaren had ended his England career and Capello had shut him out at Madrid and I guess he thought it was all over for him. Given his time again he would have made a different decision I'm sure.

I'm sure that the Galaxy would be reluctant to let him play in Italy but I would think he will get his way.

  • 2 months later...

If we can forget our own miseries for a second,

Is anyone watching Beckham's Milan bow?

He hasnt been bad, sprayed a few decent passes, but Alexandre Pato is absolutely sublime. Supposedly we were after him, but Roman let his pal Berlu take the lead. If so, what a mistake. This kid is sensational.

Scored one like Rooney's against us, and just slotted above the keeper from the byline after beating Roma's CB in a footrace to the endline
