  1. I don't undestand how someone can calmly walk into a creek and drown, with or without weighting.
  2. Thanks going out to Moi and Stride. I'll queue up The Firm and Rise of the Foot Soldier. Hopefully they'll present the directors' original product, as dubbing is a form of cheating. to me anyway.
  3. Just saw a film that some of you may be familiar with, but which I knew nothing about. "Cass", the true story of Cass Pennant, was very engaging with its treatment of violence and race relations in London circa 1970's. What a story, Spammers vs. Gooners with the weapons graduating from fists to bats to knives to handguns. The main character goes from a bullied immigrant to an ass-kicking hooligan, only to walk away from the violence and write his autobiography. This movie had the power of a punch in the mouth, but nuance to make the viewer consider the concepts of hatred and retribution. Maybe some of you knew this man. I wonder if anyone can recommmend some other good movies on this subject...
  4. What I took from Avatar hasn't been covered here so far. Beyond the good (3D special effects, a thorough telling) and bad (a cross-species love affair, lack of originalty), stands the real message from Jim Cameron to the world: the raping of another's land for mineral resources and profit. Corporate-driven interests being executed by military force definitely made my blood boil. In this film, the disregard and even hatred for the indiginous peoples was on full display. I wonder if my conservative friends were rooting for the mining operation, as surely the liberal tree-huggers rooted for the defense of Pandora at the end. Of course this is a sci-fi/fantasy, but the ongoing fight for the survival of Brazilian rain forests shows the relevance. I hope my 15 year old son takes this message with him, as well as you good Shedsters, because Hollywood doesn't usually bring it home like this. For that reason I give Avatar a 5 out of 5.
  5. That was a nice start for Chicharito, or little pea (Hernandez). Dude is part of a group that is resurrecting the New York Cosmos. Man, it's been awhile since I thought of Giorgio Chinaglia.
  6. Wlecome, Benji. I think you're going to be glad you joined.
  7. Hey Drizz, are you a student at the U of Miami?
  8. Lithgow's modesty must have been a disappointment for you. I was disappointed they didn't all end up one of those missionary boiling pots that cannibals seem to prefer, but I really did like the film.
  9. 3 points for the film, thought provoking missionary theme 2 points for Darryl Hannah full-on nudity -1 point for Kathy Bates full-on nudity 4/5 overall rating
  10. Al Pacino was an aspiring actor when Coppola cast him, the producers wanted Warren Beatty if you can believe such a thing. I suppose Maks already explained their reasoniing. BTW Pacino was a direct descendant of immigrants from Corleone, Sicily - just like his character. As to casting women to "broaden" appeal, how about "Lawrence of Arabia" - not a single female credit in a 3 1/2 hour film!
  11. Welcome, Djisi !
  12. That octopus is trying for 7-7, which is a good day in Vegas. And calamari is actually squid. It only took me 40 some years to figure that out,
  13. Holland 3-2. Probably been mentioned, but van Bronckhorst had one of the best goals I've ever seen...
  14. If Adu gets a game there may well be an appeal to FIFA! :D
  15. MHedges bringing bracketology to life! Europeans just don't get enough college basketball in their diet.
  16. Great point which makes me think of the "Little Engine Who Could" once over the top. He's the oldest 24 yr old ever.
  17. "I see both our squads advancing into the knockout phase, England vs Germany..." - TD on May 13th England can get payback for the 1996 Euro semifinal knockout, and the London Blitz as well. No Ballack means no confliction. USA can get payback for the 2006 World Cup loss and knockout. No Essien seems promising, but he missed that last match and the Black Stars still dominated us. Congratulations to and Good luck to both squads this weekend!
  18. Wow, USA takes the group for the first time since 1930 Uruguay! Dempsey, Donovan, Altidore, DeMerit and Howard were all immense. Best game I've ever seen from Bradley, congrats on your timing son. Tough luck to Slovenia, going from 1st to 3rd. Screw Algeria, bunch of second tier pseudo-Frenchmen. And now it's time for Germany, Ghana and Serbia to figure our next matchups. To you mad dogs and Englishmen, sorry we had to nick your crumpet. B)
  19. Banned at Yankee Stadium and Wimbledon. I don't mind them because they show excitement
  20. Prince William is president of the FA, and an Aston Villa fan. My best guess.
