Posted June 7, 200916 yr Following on from worldfootballhere's All-Time Historic XI, how about a side made up of players who you thought were unsung heroes, the players who you felt were under-rated due to comparisons with bigger stars in the side at the time? Here's mine: - John Phillips Gary Locke Marvin Hinton Joe McLaughlin John Sparrow Ian Britton Johnny Boyle Eamonn Bannon Peter Houseman Tommy Baldwin Kenny Swain
June 7, 200916 yr i always thought le saux never got the plaudits he deserved, he was an exceptional left back
June 7, 200916 yr I don't think I could offer any other choices Bluebeard. You've put pretty much the very same team as I would have done.
June 7, 200916 yr I would consider putting Eddie Newton in there - well the Newton we saw under Gullit rather than before Gullit.
June 7, 200916 yr I wouldn't put John Sparrow in there BB, but John Bumstead would definately get on my team sheet.

(Ditto Johnny Bumstead, who's a minor legend at the club). Maybe I'd pick Colin Lee at RB because he did an amazingly good job there in our promotion season in 83-4, and I can't think of many players in history who have converted from centre-forward to full-back, with or without success.

I found that people were always criticising Locke and giving him stick - maybe it was just the part of the ground I was in, or the people I stood with - same with Bumstead. I always rated them both highly though!
June 7, 200916 yr Paulo, im 100% serious, people just seem to forget his first season but i just cant get into the argument again Kevin Wilson Tommy Boyd Bummers I always thought Jody Morris was a cracking little player, a c**t of course, but he had it. Personally i always rated Emerson Thome as well and I never thought Ed De Goey got the recognition he deserved. Edited June 7, 200916 yr by bjd

Totally agree regarding Emerson Thome, Johnny Bumstead and Kevin Wilson...but Tommy Boyd??? As you say, Jody had such an opportunity to make a go of it at Chelsea, but he's such an arsehole he managed to f*ck it up. Where is he now, St.Johnstone? And don't even get me started on Ferreira ;)

Bumstead is a must, maybe Finnieston.
June 8, 200916 yr Author I think Francis might push Phillips for the green Jersey.Bumstead is a must, maybe Finnieston. Bumstead and Francis, maybe...but Steve Finnieston was highly rated by nearly everyone, and it was terribly sad to see his career finished early by injury.
June 8, 200916 yr Bumstead and Francis, maybe...but Steve Finnieston was highly rated by nearly everyone, and it was terribly sad to see his career finished early by injury. ok, he was rated....at the time. but he was soon forgoton by the majority. players like Bannon, Hazard, Roberts and Stein are remembered before him, which is strange because he was a superb striker who scored a shed load of goals, consistantly for us.
June 8, 200916 yr I don't know if he counts as underrated, but Mark Stein did a great job under Hoddle and helped us stay up in his first year
June 9, 200916 yr Was going to mention Stein, and I agree with whomever mentioned Eddie Newton, he was the lynchpin to Gullit's midfield. I can't talk about pre 94 as I wasn't following Chelsea until then, but a few others I liked: Bjarne Goldbaek, Steve Clarke (Icould be wrong there but I felt a lot of people only talked more about him when he got into coaching...again distance and all that could be altering my perception), I also quite liked Mario Stanic. I don't know whether to include Forssell either, because I think lots of people hoped he'd come good..but he was always off on loan or injured, so maybe it's more a case of unrealized potential as opposed to unrecognized player Scott
