Avram Grant appointed Portsmouth's Director of Football

Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant has returned to Portsmouth as their new director of football.

The 54-year-old Israeli was technical director at Fratton Park from June 2006 to July 2007, before leaving to become director of football at Chelsea.

He subsequently succeeded Jose Mourinho as manager at Stamford Bridge before being sacked in May 2008.

It is the first significant move at Portsmouth since Ali Al Faraj completed his 90% buy-out of the club this week.

More to follow.

he was on goals on sunday on sunday (funnily enough). just hope for portsmouth's sake they aren't lining him up as a potential manager

Yeah he was terrible for us and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Second in the league, and so, so close to winning the Champion's League in the space of around 8 months.

But other than that, rubbish.

we were also knocked out of the fa cup by barnsley when we were the only top 4 team left in and 2 minutes from going out of the champions league before riisse decided he didn't want to go

he's a likeable fella but just not a manager

although he is a better manager than scolari, i'll give him that much

There is no room for runner's up in a relegation battle!

An runner-up is Avi's speciality

hmmmm. It is hard , of course, to argue with any of that.

However i still maintain what happened that season happened not because of , but in spite of Avram Grant.

We were very, very poor in so many games under him (in particular in Europe), but under ended up nearly winning so much! Its very strange. I for one will never really forgive him for Wigan at home.

The fact he wasnt snapped up by another club until now (though i dont think DOF at Pompey really counts) speaks volumes.

Anyway, he certainly has his part in Chelsea history and i guess we should wish him all the very best.

Inheriting a team that had just come off of back to back Premiership Championships, and very successfull European campaigns, is completely different to inheriting a team that have only just won their first three points of the season. I'm sure standing about on the sidelines waving your amrs about will do wonders at Pompey

I wish him all the best.

he did his best when the club was a bit lost at the time. A lot like Guus but without the flair and charm...that was his downfall.

I think not!

Actually risse was kind enough to score that spectacular goal in the first leg of the champions league. We would have lost it 1-0 but that is still a position from which we could have progressed to the final. I've have only got thanks for what he did for us that season, and i hope he does take over from hart (who is a walking disaster) and do well at pompey

really? could have swore it was the 2nd... it doesn't change my stance though

if he does take over, I would want him to do well but I just can't see it working for him. like I said he was probably better than scolari but that's far from a glowing report

Good luck Avi,

everyone knows I think he done well for us and although our boys amassed more points in his reign than the eventual Champions he will always be frowned on by most.

I always thought if he had have won over the whole squad he could have done very well andd regardless of the very hurtful defeats to Barnsley and Spurs when the team looked like they were getting behind him they played some decent stuff..

we all know Wigan away was painful but when the players are not up for it Wigan can be a tough game..ask Carlo.

Should have won the CL under him and luck was no lady that night but I have nothing but respect for the bloke, good luck to him.

i reckon he'll be the portsmouth manager before xmas

good luck to him except when he's up against us

unfortunately when he was at the bridge, he was on a hiding to nothing straight from the start, simply because he wasnt jose mourhino, and it didnt matter who took the hot seat they would have probably been treated the same as avram was

I always thought similar, and am glad I know there's at least one other person who thinks the same.

I wish him all the best.

And the man management. And the tactical nous. And the world class managerial pedigree. And his handling of the media. And the.... oh I can't be bothered to go on. Let's just say I'm sure the training cones will once again be very neatly arranged at Fratton Park.

Welcome back Avi.

Welcome back Avi.

Director of football at Pompey is the 'cone and bib man'.

A neatly cut segment of orange should help them avoid relegation though, it's what they've been missing :D
