January 14, 20233 yr Watching the Guns of Navarone. A great war film and one of the best adaptations of an Alistair MacLean book. Great cast as well. One of the actors, Anthony Quayle served with the Special Operations Executive in WW2. Have to say it's far better than the sequel Force 10 From Navarone. A poor film in my opinion.
January 22, 20233 yr Watching Schindler's List. Probably the most powerful and moving film I've watched. That it was filmed in black and white adds to its poignancy. A reminder that we should not forget the atrocities of past events and not to repeat them. Sadly there have been mass genocides since the Holocaust of WW2. This coming Friday is Holocaust Memorial Day. The book Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally on which the film is based is worth reading.
January 26, 20233 yr Goldfinger. My favourite James Bond film. With the wonderful Aston Martin DB5 and the lovely Honor Blackman.

Good timing caught the last hour of that yesterday, some good scenes the fight between Bond and Oddjob and then the nail biting finale as the bomb counter ticks down. Never realised Honour Blackman was born in the 1920's.

She is one of at least four actors who appeared in The Avengers or The New Avengers that also had a role in James Bond films.

Another actor who appeared in one episode of The Avengers had a lead role in a Bond Film. This person was related to Ian Fleming. A prize to the person who can name him.

Another one is the Raid movies both 1 & 2, Indonesian films good thrillers and good action sequences too.
February 12, 20233 yr Watching The Green Mile. A brilliant film and I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it. One of the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel. Edited February 12, 20233 yr by Boyne
February 15, 20233 yr 12 Angry Men. One of my favourite films. Great script and great cast. Most of the film is set in a jury room. Shows that you don't have to have loads of special effects to make a great film. Originally a stage play but adapted for the screen. Directed by Sidney Lumet. Cast included Henry Fonda, Lee J Cobb and Jack Klugman. Saw the stage version in London about ten years ago. Cast included Robert Vaughn.
March 2, 20233 yr Chariots of Fire. Difficult to believe that it's over forty years since the film. Some poetic licence in the film especially with the bit about Liddell not running on a Sunday. A good cast with a fine soundtrack. Liddell competed in athletics events at the two most iconic football grounds in Britain. No prizes for knowing which two.
March 3, 20233 yr Saw the film the Lone Survivor last night. Set in Afghanistan with US forces there trying to capture or kill senior Al-Quaeda personnel. A small team goes in by stealth only to be discovered by a goat herder and his son just after identifying the targets. After a debate about what to do they decide to abort the mission and let the goat herder and son go unharmed. Due to communication windows with breaks of two hours things take a turn for the worse as Al-Quaeda move in to destroy them. Surprisingly you see the photos of the real soldiers at the end of the movie as the credits roll.
March 10, 20233 yr Scream 6. Was heading towards being the 2nd best film of the franchise only to be ruined by some stupid writing at the end.
March 19, 20233 yr Watching The Cruel Sea. A film I watched many times over the years. I rank it as one of the finest WW2 films ever produced and I rate it alongside films such as Das Boot and Ice Cold in Alex. Does a brilliant job of portraying the role of the Royal Navy especially in the Atlantic Convoys. A great cast including Jack Hawkins. Based on the book by Nicholas Montserrat. A great read.
April 4, 20233 yr Anyone read the latest Jack Reacher, No Plan B? I tough it was good though one in part could not understand how he got out of a fix?
April 16, 20233 yr I mentioned the Raid movies a while back and watched Raid II by chance last night this is one of the fight scenes in the film certainly more entertaining than Bond and at least a match for Jason Bourne https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMje7SrCtPI

The various fights in the hallway of the tower block in the first one, and the kitchen fight in the second one are SUPERB. Best action sequences I've every seen.

Also in the hallway was neat too and of course earlier in the prison though due to the mud at times was difficult to know who was who. I liked the first Raid film though appreciated the scale and breadth of the second one. On the second one a shame you could not work out the words as he leaves the complex just as the Japanese mob arrives.
May 22, 20233 yr I watched Tora Tora Tora this afternoon. A film I've watched many times over the years. First time I saw it was when I was a kid and my Dad took me to the cinema to see it. I think it's fair to say that it is very much better than Pearl Harbor which for me is an awful film. Tora Tora Tora is a very accurate film and has a good cast and it's good that it shows the events from the viewpoints of both the American and Japanese. As FDR said it was a day that will live in infamy.
June 23, 20233 yr Watched Ice Cold in Alex yesterday. A fine film with a great cast. One of my favourite films set in WW2. Have watched it many times over the years.
