I often listen to a classic rock station on my satellite radio and they play 60s and 70s vinyl tracks. Mostly they play the same old tracks over and over with occasional album tracks that are less heard. But the big thing for me is who they don't play and who they do play.

For example in my opinion

Billy Joel is NOT rock but Bob Seger is

Elton John is NOT rock but Jackson Brown is.

They don't play Joni Mitchell but I would put her in a rock category though I might be wrong - they don't play her though.

Who is not rock in your opinion?

They never or rarely play Jefferson Airplane but to me they are clearly rock. They don't play It's a Beautiful Day but anyway were they rock? I never hear Zappa, I am sick of the Stones and Led Zep. Is Richie Havens rock? Do you need a band to be a rock star or can acoustic solo artists be classified.

Interested to hear your views.

rock is....usually guitar band played at a certain pace and a guitar solo to massage the leads ego.It can be played by cool folk, but usually twats. On amore serious note i think it was a style of music white kids played and it mutated into this sound, it covers a wide area progresive, hard, etc. very good but difficult question that i have failed to answer

Music is whatever you want it to be and thats the beauty.

You cant define 'rock music', you just cant...

Blues ? Punk ? Metal ? Country ? Grunge ?

Its like trying to define a supermarket.

I agree. When I started uploading music to my iTunes I couldn't believe the amount of music categories there were in there, ridiculous!

I try to keep it simple: - Rock, Rock'n'Roll, Soul, Blues, Reggae, Folk, Country, Pop, MOR, Crap

And Lauren - Jackson Browne, rock - are you sure??? :JC_doubleup: ;)

Graham Parker once said that Billy Joel being a rock star was Russian disinformation to promote his concert in Moscow.

If you like it, it doesn't need a label!

True. I like most of Dylan's stuff up until the mid 70's, and have always thought of his acoustic stuff as folk, and electric stuff folk rock, which of course is over simplified. Joni Mitchell is even harder to define, ranging from folk to folk rock to folk/jazz to crap :P

It's impossible really. One example - do you remember The Sweet from the early 70's? Pure pop followed by glam-rock, but their albums and the b-sides of their singles were almost heavy metal.

There's got to be a way to BLOCK BUSTER!

only men with small ones say size doesn't matter

There is never anything wrong with the size of a mans "seahorse" - it's the tightness, or lack of it, of the womans clam that is the problem.

:P

Oh Moos! I've been pondering over a discreet way to say exactly that - the only metaphors I could come up with were grossly vulgar! Well done you for putting it so tastefully!

Small is fine by me! make of that what you will!
