Zonal Marking, an internet football blog which I usually take quite a lot of pleasure and interest in reading has published its team of the season today:

http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/05/20/zms...-of-the-season/

GK: Reina (Liverpool)

LB: Riise (Roma)

CB: Lucio (Inter Milan)

CB: Pique (Barcelona)

RB: Alves (Barcelona)

CM: Pizarro (AS Roma)

CM: Xavi (Barcelona)

AM: Sneijder (Inter Milan)

FW: Robben (Bayern Munich)

FW: Rooney (Man Utd)

FW: Messi (Barcelona)

Not a single Chelsea player. John Arne Riise over Ashley Cole and Rooney over Drogba...

Thoughts?

Meh, not even a well known blog so I'm not really bothered. Just look at the comments about our Drogba and Cole in the reserve team, its clear theyre not big fans.

Ashley Cole is pretty much regarded far and wide as the best LB on the planet right now, with Evra being the closest to him

If we have a season like this every year and still get no individual plaudits, I cant say I would complain

That's a joke as they completely ignored Chelsea!

Here are my choices:.

GK: Cech (Chelsea)

RB: Maicon (Inter]

CB: Lucio (Inter)

CB: Vidic (Man U)

LB: Cole (Chelsea)

CM: Sneijder (Inter)

CM: Iniesta (Barca)

AM: Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

FW: Robben (Bayern M)

FW: Drogba (Chelsea)

FW: Messi (Barca)

if their team is a joke what does that make yours?

would love to see your justification for some of those selections, particularly iniesta. at least they've picked 11 players who have actually had great seasons.

also, for what it's worth, their second 11 features FOUR chelsea players.

I look at this thread and think will people on this board ever get tired of crying about a perceived lack of recognition? (and a side question, will they ever notice the irony in talking about liverpool fans supposed victim mentality?)

So you think there team is fair? You honestly believe every single player they picked has had a better season than any player we have in those positions?

Yeh, Randy, stop the moaning, can’t you see they just love us out there! :P

So you think there team is fair? You honestly believe every single player they picked has had a better season than any player we have in those positions?

you seem to think I am defending their argument, where what I'm doing is attacking what I find to be inane criticism of their argument.

anyway:

fair? yes- they've given reasons and they've come to that conclusion.

do I think it's the correct selection though? no. of our players I'd have cole and drogba in but that would be it.

I don't have a problem with criticising their choices (nesta missing half a season and getting into the second 11 is a nonsense for example), but to just complain about a lack of chelsea players is something I find pretty pathetic.

our double win has received plenty of praise in the media, but people seem to go looking specifically for anything written about us that is negative and then use it to justify the idea that the media hate us / are conspiring against us / want us to lose etc. I find that incredibly tedious.

p.s.

Yeh, Randy, stop the moaning, can’t you see they just love us out there! rolleyes.gif

dorset, they don't love us, but they don't all hate us either. you're better than presenting the spectrum of human feeling in binary form (which is all that I can infer from your cutting remark).

randy described their selection as a joke before positing a far more curious line up. no reasons for his selection, no reasons for why the zonal marking 11 is bad (other than the lack of chelsea representation).

Ashley Cole and DD would have too 100% be on any legit defence list.....

Maybe maybe maybe you could leave out ACole...but unlikely!

But please name me 1 striker who has a more defencive influence than DD...... even his haters admit he is a HUGE asset to our defence as well as offence, especially in set pieces (Rooney does track back a lot, but that also effects his play going forward)

well played g4 and i think its about time someone said it. i too find it a little tedious a times.

this past fortnight there have been many, many reports and articles praising us in a manner not seen for about a decade but you wouldnt know it if you came to this website.

i totally agree with your comment about the ott liverpool stuff too, it just makes us look ridiculous

as for the team they picked ? i wouldnt have gone with a lot of them and yes, i wouldve gone with some chelsea players, namely drogba and cole.

but its far too easy to to disagree because it doesnt have 'brana' or 'lamps' in it and then post a team that couldve come directly from skys euro team of the season or the top 11 nominations for the ballon d'or.

G4 has been saying it for a long time, and he's not the only one.

Perhaps even more depressingly, if you visit forums of other teams all you have to do is substitute the name of the appropriate team and you can read the same posts over and over again.

Or even more fun is to try watching a game on Sky that you're neutral about. Pick one of the teams to support and then spend 5 minutes convincing yourself that the entire Sky commentary and punditry teams hate that team. You will be amazed at the number of examples you will find where that hatred is manifest.

I can see it somewhat from both angles, but have to draw the line at the Sky comment Liam.

Watching Chelsea on Sky is sometimes better with the commentary turned down. Just watch back the Wigan game when Drogba started complaining (only briefly mind) and listen to how much they go on about it. Richard Keys couldn't wait to get to half time to start his analysis on why Drogs moaned and they still spoke about it during the second half. Even Redknapp made a sort of 'lets move on from that' comment after.

While we're ranting, what pisses me off is in the week we won the title, a topic appeared here covering what 'bitter Mancs were saying', I couldn't give two f**ks!

Drogba deserved everything he got Mod, although I was too busy laughing at his comedy pout to listen.

I'm serious about my suggestion. Try it!

i may give it a go next season , sounds fun!

anyway your sentiment is correct. I know for a fact utd fans think there is an agenda against them , ditto Liverpool fans too, amazingly

Yes, we get some bad press , namely because of Roman , and previously because of an ex manager and maybe now because of some of our players. In general though I don't think we can complain , but ultimatley who cares?

We just won the double ffs!

I think its mainly exfootballers/commericial type writers who just hate on us because it will garauntee a good approval rating for most fans of other clubs....

However serious/informed(for lack of a better word "good") writers are usually pretty level headed

Urm, 7 posts in this topic so i imagine some people care. If you don't care yourself, don't post.

Its good that few guys care.....But even when PFA didnt include many deserving Chelsea names in their team .....why should we give value to some lesser known bull$h!te blog??

Because maybe some people want to talk about it and it's obviously brought up a debate, would i go into your Edin Dzeko topic and say Who cares? It's well worthy of a who cares but hey im not you.

zonal marking is a very very good site. better than most mainstream media outlets when it comes to football analysis. that is their strength, and I have a feeling that if you read a couple of their analyses you'd probably learn something about the game.

Well said g4, bjd & liam: whilst there have been numerous examples of anti-chels bias in the press over the years this is not an example of it at all. in my view zonal marking has emerged as one of the top football sites in recent times and in part because it confines its erudition on what takes place on the paddock - no more no less.

No doubt Zonal Marking is a wonderful website and a definite improvement on the BBC's Tom Vickery. From a tactical point of view it's outstanding. I would like to see a little more on set pieces and a preview of the World Cup would prove interesting.
