Very strange that Capello has sent out JT to face the media, picking him over the captain and vice captain. Can we read anything into this, does it mean he doesnt trust Gerrard in this situation? very strange.

Not a lot really, as expected. The main thing is there is a meeting tonight where opinions will be aired, and he spent most of the interview hinting Joe Cole should be played and the formation needs changing. He was asked if anyone, including Capello, will be upset by the spoken opinions tonight, he replied he didnt care if they were upset.

from Sky:

Terry pulls no punches

England ace admits performances have not been good enough

John Terry admits England showed a distinct lack of desire, fight and belief during their draw with Algeria.

The Three Lions looked anything but World Cup contenders on Friday as they stumbled to a goalless stalemate in Cape Town.

Their hopes of reaching the knockout stages in South Africa now hang by a thread, with everything resting on a win or bust showdown with Slovenia on Wednesday.

If they are to make their way into the last 16 and claim the three priceless points they require, they are going to need to put in a markedly improved performance from that they put in against Algeria.

It is difficult to pinpoint why things have gone so badly so far, but that outing only served to highlight the deficiencies which exist within the side at the moment.

A change in approach is expected to be implemented in midweek, with it imperative that a winning formula is found if England are to make any lasting impression on the tournament.

Patriotic centre-half Terry is all too aware that standards need to rise considerably and has pulled no punches in his damning assessment of England's latest lacklustre showing.

Pride

The Chelsea man agrees that the Three Lions are missing the key elements needed to be a successful side, but remains confident that they can still be put in place and the summer of 2010 can become a memorable one for all concerned.

"The most frustrating thing for the manager to see was the lack of fight and desire," confessed Terry.

"We all, as a group of players, need to relax and do what we do week-in, week-out for our clubs and do what we did in the qualifying campaign.

"We shouldn't be changing the way we play and we shouldn't be worrying about other sides, because from what I've seen so far no teams worry me at all.

"Argentina are probably the best side so far. Everyone goes on about Germany and then they lose the game (against Serbia).

"We got criticised for playing a long ball game but, football-wise, we can mix it with anyone.

"I think everyone knows we can play. Week-in, week-out with our clubs we play football on the floor. But first and foremost, we're a proud country and we've got to go out there wanting to win."

Very weird decision. Has anyone given any explanation why it wasn't the manager, the captain or vice captain who was answering questions from the media? Terry's not fit to carry the captain's armband, but he's the one who has to represent the team when things get tough. Where was Capello? Where was Gerrard? Where was Lampard?

Maybe terry took it upon himself to answer rather than been asked by capello/gerrard

Either way the Real Captain has spoken the truth and 'Third Choice' is nowhere to be seen

Terry doing a captain's job. As he said himself - his presence in the dressing room hasn't changed since he lost the armband.

That said, if player motivation is the key to England's current rut, then it's a captain's job to fire them up again. Step in Stevie G - Ghost Captain Extraordinaire.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did, but it does look a bit weird that it's not the captain or the manager who takes care of a press conference like this. Surely Capello and Gerrard must realize that this doesn't exactly make them look good. Not that I'm worried about how Capello or Gerrard look like, mind you. Terry handled it well and I doubt Capello or Gerrard could have handled it better.

Its clear that's what the team needs, give JT back the band and let him command on the pitch. We're lacking management all round and you know we're in the sh*t when you start begging for Crouch to come on!

Terry should have never lost the captaincy anyway, Capello is a weak fool giving in to the tabloids.

Based on footballing merits he shouldn't have lost the captaincy, but if Terry would have kept the armband, the press conferences would have been all about Terry and the scandal. It wouldn't have benefited either Terry or the team.

Yeah, we've really hit it off since Terry lost the armband. Although knowing Gerrard he'll probably pull off a dive to win a tournament-saving penalty against Slovenia and be hailed as a hero by the press.

Weve been garbage since JT lost the armband, just like the euro 2008 qualifiers when a certain Stevie me took the armband on for the final 2 games which we lost.

We have no way of knowing how England would have played if Terry had stayed as the captain, but one thing that I'm sure of is that England's press conferences would have centered around the scandal, which has nothing to do with football. There's no point in having that kind of circus surrounding the matches. They simply don't need any extra distractions.

Fk JT, he wants Joe Cole to play and he is the boss!

he is stirring up a argument with Capello ashe is comparing Anelka being sent home to tonight's England team vs Manager show down talk.

here we go the self-established Mr England!

It wasnt even mentioned today, so why do you think it would have been mentioned all the time if he had stayed captain? Gerrard & Ferdinand are hardly squeeky clean, they could also have easily made it difficult for them. The fact remains with JT in qualifiers we were very good, and he lead the team really well. Since he lost the captains armband we have been sh*te and looked leader less on the pitch.

Make sure you count to 10 before you post something. Actually, keep counting until you fall asleep.

He is doing the job off the park that Gerrad clearly fails to. Shouldn't surprise anyone as Gerrard fails to do it on the park as well. Capello must be quietly regretting stripping the only quality captain available to him of th job.

I'm not saying it would have been mentioned every time until the end of the world, but I'm absolutely sure that it would have been a big issue during the build up to the World Cup. The team didn't need any unnecessary distractions and neither did Terry. The public opinion was very much against him with the whole "team Bridge" thing and every opposing team's boo-boys targeted him during the matches pretty much every time he got the ball and it clearly affected his performances. If he had been England's captain, he would have been "under a magnifying glass", as we say in Finland and his every little mistake would have been highlighted. I think he needed to keep a lower profile for a while and just concentrate on football.
