Chelsea have expressed interest in bringing Brazilian midfielder Ramires to Stamford Bridge, according to the player' agent. The benfica midfielder has played in 4 of Brazils world cup games. Havent really seen much of him so cant really comment on whether he would be a good buy or not. No fee mentioned as yet.

He is quite versatile from what I've seen of him with Benfica. Tends to play on the right hand side of centre midfield, but a drifts quite a lot out to the right flank. They play a system a little bit like Argentina at the WC, so essentially he plays where Rodriguez was playing.

He gets up and down the park well, a little bit like Essien when he is released forward, but obviously he is nowhere near as strong or as good. I would suggest given that Benfica payed about 6.5mil for him last summer they'll want quite a penny to part with him so quickly.

Wouldn't be the worst buy, but I'd suggest his agent dropped these links to NOTW to encourage Benfica to get a new contract out for him given he has risen in reputation significantly since they bought him.

Chelsea make enquiry about Brazilian midfielder

Chelsea have expressed interest in bringing Brazilian midfielder Ramires to Stamford Bridge, according to the player's agent.

Benfica star Ramires, who has four years left on his contract with the Portuguese club, played four games for Brazil at the World Cupspacer.gif but was absent from their quarter-final defeat to Holland due to suspension.

The player's agent, Luis Carlini, says both theBluesspacer.gif and Bayern Munichspacer.gif have made enquiries about the 23-year-old midfielder.

"Many clubs from the big European leagues have been in contact about Ramires," Carlini told theNews of the World.

"Chelseaspacer.gif and Bayern have spoken to Benfica, but I can't say more."

Ramires, who joined Benfica last summer for £6.5million, admits he could be tempted by an offer from a high-profile club, but insists the decision lies with the Lisbon outfit.

"I came to Europe to win championships," he said.

"It is normal that I would look at any offers from clubs in bigger leagues but I am currently under contract and Benfica will have the final say."

Thought he was outstanding against Chile. Looks like he would play the holding role well too.

Ticks a lot of boxes I guess. Anyone who would limit Mikels playing time is fine by me!!

Now the world cup is nearing the end expect a lot more of these stories!

At least one a day I'd say. Not sure we'd use him as a holding player exclusively. At Brazil they use Gilberto Silva and at Benfica Javi Garcia, he is more of a secondary midfielder who gets forward more. A box to box kind of player who a bit like Essien would be wasted in the holding role.

He does tick alot of boxes, but again another club has gotten him first. Really makes me wonder why we don't have some solid links in Sth America who can get these guys first up. Seems many of the players we are linked too, Aguero and Pato are two prime examples, could have been sourced a lot cheaper directly from South America.

Yeah, I remember reading about Porto recently and their system of buying 1-3m rated South Americans, training them, selling them for a tidy profit a year or two later, and repeating the whole process. It just seems like a lot of the big teams don't have time to buy these South American prospects and would rather let a team like Porto or Atletico take the initial risk, only to have to pay a rather large sum down the road to pry the South American away...

EDIT: Well apparently Aguero didn't go to Atletico that cheap...but still...the point I made still works....kinda....oh hush, whatever :laugh2:

Im not sure if Aguero came cheap or not to Atletico, but they are making one hell of a profit off him anyways whenever they sell him.

I seem to remember that they were having serious financial problems, but somehow scraped, I think it was £20m together to sign him.

It was at least 20, upwards of 23...so us not signing him straight out of South America makes a little more sense now haha...

Sky headline:

Ramires dreams of Chelsea move

don't get too excited. this is the actual quote from Ramires:

"One good game could be enough to attract the interest of a big club. I don't know the names of the clubs that are after me, but it would be a dream for me to play for a big club such as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Chelsea."

and for good measure, the article also manages to link Ramires with a move to Bayern.

Looked a good player when he came on for Brazil as a sub, infact I'd take him over Melo anyday. Given our midfield situation today it may be a good addition if he came in the range of 8 to 12 million.

Ramires is a box to box not a holding midfielder. He is young and has potential. A top priority for Ancelotti is an attackiing midfielder.

Carlo has stated he'd love to bring his protege, Kaka, to the Bridge. If he fails in that endeavour I'm all in favour of signing Ramires.

Do you see the problem, here?

Of course ther's a difference between an attacking midfielder and a box to box midfielder. Kaka is the epitome of an attacking midfielder. He directly influences the attack high up the field. Zico another Brazilian was an excellent example of an attacking midfielder.

Ramires as a box to box midfielder plays at both ends of the field which requires exceptional stamina. Roy Keane was a very good example of a box to box midfielder.

If Kaka does not come to the Bridge I would have no hesitation iin accepting Ramires despite the difference!

It's amazing how the market has become so inflated, he looks promising but is he really worth £20 million?

He's 23, Brazilian and never stops running, 20 million is well worth it mate. I hope we have put in an bid because just imagine a fit Essien and Ramires in a team together? haha we'd never stop.

Hmm, interesting. I like him as a player because of the way he plays drifting out to the right which could provide us with a little more width, assuming we play the typical Malouda-Drogba-Anelka axis up front.

Thats said 20m is a bit steep, and I'm not sure he is what I think we need in midfield. We can talk about more attacking players etc. but for me the one man that needs ie. must be replaced in our squad is Michael Ballack. Now I know many people aren't fans of him, but for me his passing accuracy, positional sense and experience in that midfield are assets that were very important to our success last year and we need to find a player with at least some of those assets to replace him.

Ramires doesn't fit that description, despite the fact that I like the way he plays and have been impressed by his performances for both Benfica and Brazil.

Agree with that. Perhaps he is more of a replacement for Essien, assuming that Essien breaks down again, which I personally think is a 50% possibility?

Overall we have released J Cole and Ballack both of whom would either start or be on as subs last season and only Benayoun, who arguably is not as good as either at their best, to replace him. So at the moment, in my view we are down compared to last season and certainly there is no playmaker in the midfield. Ballack is easy to underestimate, he had a lovely pass on him and great positional sense. He also had displayed great character on the pitch and I think would have made a great captain for the team.
