Posted May 23, 201113 yr Yeah ok he may have a season or 2 left in him yet (poor old fella), but we have to start planning for his step down, I think most of you will agree that the signs have started to show, only slightly mind you, so maybe we should start thinking about a new club captain amongst our new signings ? Or have we got the right person already with us ? Discuss............
May 23, 201113 yr Don't want to start thinking about this yet, its frightening! But Ivanovic and Cech are the ones that comes in to mind.
May 23, 201113 yr According to the Times' 'Fink Tank' which processes game stats for every team, Terry was the fourth best player in the Premier League this season. I'd imagine he'll be around for a while yet.
May 23, 201113 yr Author According to the Times' 'Fink Tank' which processes game stats for every team, Terry was the fourth best player in the Premier League this season. I'd imagine he'll be around for a while yet. I hope so mate, but he could go pearshaped very quickly, but still we have to start thinking about what we do when he's not able to play 90% of the season, I dont expect him to play as much this coming season, it's a long season.
May 23, 201113 yr Unless there is an exceptional candidate for another position, I feel that the captain should always be a defender. Defenders have a good view of the pitch from the back and can see everything that's going on, but they aren't as far removed from the game as a goalkeeper. By that logic, I guess Ivanovic is the obvious choice. To be honest, it's probably not worth thinking about until JT suggests he might be calling it a day.
May 23, 201113 yr Ivanovic for me too. He always looks like the most passionate player on the pitch, even in dire situations like when we were 3-0 down to Arsenal, he scored our goal. He just oozes Chelsea. Hope he sticks around like JT has.
May 23, 201113 yr Ivanovic or Cech for me, they are the only 2 players in the current squad who look like captain material.
May 23, 201113 yr I think JT will be able to play for a few more seasons and I see no reason to start discussing who will be our captain after he retires. We simply don't know who will still be here. Maybe we will have bought someone new by then who is a born leader.
May 23, 201113 yr Author Maybe we will have bought someone new by then who is a born leader. Thats my point, if were making a few signings this summer (3-5+) , then surely this should be at the back of our mind.
May 23, 201113 yr Of the players we have right now I would go with Branners. I definitely wouldn't go with Cech because I don't believe keepers should ever be the captain. That said JT will be around for a while yet
May 23, 201113 yr Now I am thinking a little longer term here. Not sure who the next captain will be but I can definately see the captain after that being Josh Mceachran who I think would be a great candidate I agree that My first choice owuld always be a defender but a midfield meastro can also do a good job. Bit like Beckham, leading by example. Any opinions on that anyone?
May 23, 201113 yr I'd go with Branna as well, although I think sometimes he needs to keep a slightly cooler head on his shoulders. Terry has touted Luiz as a future Chelsea captain, however.

That said JT will be around for a while yet I also don't like goalies being the captain, so even though I love Cech I would hope he's not our future captain.
May 23, 201113 yr sorry, bit of a daft thread in my view cos JT consistently up there top 5 in the country and definitely 2-3 years more in him as these days they can play longer in his position yesterday, he was top-man - he hurts like the fans do were gonna miss him, but not till we've won the PL again and the CL
May 23, 201113 yr I'm gonna hear it for this one but: if and it is a big IF this guy stays consitant and plays like he can I can see Mikel with the armband. If you have ever heard his interviews he is very well spoken for somebody who isn't English and he is constantly talking about the team. Never talks about individuals and he never makes excuses for his bad play.

May 24, 201113 yr I think the wider debate over BrewCrew's post will be whether or not Mikel will be at this club until Terry retires.
May 24, 201113 yr I think the wider debate over BrewCrew's post will be whether or not Mikel will be at this club until Terry retires. I would agree with that too. Let me just reiterate, I think Mikel would be a good choice if he was a more consistent player. When he is on form he is a true leader for us. It is his inconsistency that hurts him.
May 24, 201113 yr I agree with the people that are saying that this topic is very premature. Though it is fun to think about. Terry will always be considered captain in my mind. He is a legend, but who knows what happens after he goes. There are so many to think about. Heck, in 3 or 4 years we could have an established English foward in Danny Sturridge leading our team. Ivan is a clear choice. I love Mikel's leadership, but his play is inconsistant. What about Luiz? He seems to command the crowd. Like I said, fun to think about, but never forget John Terry.
May 24, 201113 yr I don't think it's a bad time to talk about this, same as we shouldn't bury our heads in the sand about who will eventually replace Frank. Terry is a great leader, but he's had a fair share of back problems, and I wonder how long he can keep going? Take cortozone shots for the next few years and that'll mess him up later in his life. I do think a captain should come from the rear guard, and therefore someone like Ivan would be a good choice. I'm also of the opinion that someone like McEchran would be a brilliant choice in the future if he makes it into the first team as a youth product it'd be like Terry mk II. Plus, if he's a deep laying play maker, then that's a great position to lead from Scott
