Did Graham Roberts play Centre Back or  was he holding job in midfield?

I .liked Robbo when we were in the old second division yet he seemed to get exposed once back in the top tier.

I met Gavin Peacock in the mid-eighties when we studied A-Level History at evening classes in one of the local colleges. At the time he was playing for QPR. It was at the course where he met his wife to be Amanda. I knew Amanda before the course as she was a friend of one of my sisters.

Little did we know at the time that he would sign for Chelsea a few years later.

On the topic of Roberts.

My mind may be playing tricks but after Roberts joined us from Rangers I'm convinced we played in what must have been  have been a pre-season friendly or testimonial and Souness played for the opposition and I remember thinking that the two of them could end up making crunching tackles on each other. Story went around in 1987 or 1988 Roberts and Souness had a a falling out so there was a bit of bad blood between the pair.

Anyone know if the game did happen or am I am going crazy? Or should that be crazier?! Cheers.

@Boynementioned this before. It was Eddie Nedzwiecki Testamonial 83/84 vs the 88/89 team just promoted plus a few guests.

Souness came up for a tackle in front of the West Stand with Roberts, a big gasp went up they both got up and shook hands and smiled!!

so you didn’t imagine it!!!!

Cheers mate. Glad I didn't imagine it. I remember going to a couple of testimonials in the eighties. One for Eddie and another for Johnny B. Maybe went to more. I'll see if I can find the programmes for the games. I know we played Real Sociedad. in one. Possibly for Eddie.

Might see you at the next game. Cheers.

The man himself: wagging a finger at someone; a last ditch tackle away at Palace and celebrating with Bez.

Have checked and Johnny B's testimonial game was against Real Sociedad at the start of season 87-88. Disappointing crowd of just under 3,500. We won 1-0 with Dixon scoring the goal. So before Roberts joined the club.

Checked on the Bounder Friardale website and game was played on 16 May 1989 between the Chelsea team at the time and a Chelsea side of 83-84. Souness played for the latter. Crowd was just under 4,900. Game was a testimonial for Eddie. Not a good turn out for a club great.
