Cheers. Looks like it's an athletics meeting at the ground. I guess that's not surprising as the area was used for athletics since the 1870s or thereabouts. The runners are running in a clockwise direction as opposed to an anti-clockwise direction which is how races are run now. I wonder when the change from clockwise to anti-clockwise took place. I'll see if I can find out.

Loads of sports have been played at the Bridge over the years.

Athletes have not always run anti-clockwise

At the first London Olympics (1908), “left hand inside” was adopted, and has been used ever since.

However, the Amateur Athletic Association left open the choice of direction and as late as 1948 Oxford University athletes still ran clockwise.

THE ancient Greeks may have run anti-clockwise round their stadia, but it is a mistake to assume that the tradition was unbroken until modern times. Contemporary illustrations show that when running on tracks was revived in the nineteenth century, clockwise running was probably just as common. Oxford and Cambridge universities ran clockwise - Oxford until 1948, Cambridge until some time later.

The first modern Olympic Games in Athens (1896 and 1906) and Paris (1900) used the clockwise direction, but in 1906 there were complaints, as many countries had by then settled for the anti-clockwise practice. From 1908 the Games have all been run 'left hand inside'.

Charles Bennett is Running anti clock wise and 6 years before we were formed !

Bennett was the first British athlete to win a Gold Medal in athletics at the Olympics

He won it In the 1500m in Paris in 1900, he then shortly after won a team gold in the 5000m !

We never had Subbuteo there wasn't the room in our flat. I can't remember any of my mates having it although everyone had a board game. My brother got a game called Big League that was similar to Subbuteo and I had a game called Super Striker where you pushed down the guy's head to kick I think. The game we played most was Waddingtons Table Soccer a bit of cardboard and some plastic figures ha ha.

Incredibly he sold his shares to Marler, property developers..  Later claimed that  his wife controlled the shares.
