geezer Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 After 108 years in the top flight and 33 championships River Plate have been relegated for the first time in their history. Watch out Arsenal it might happen to you next
Maksimov Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 (edited) You sometimes hear fans, managers, players and/or journos say during latter stages of a football season that some club is too big to get relegated. Just as an example, I remember it was said about Newcastle during the season when they did in fact get relegated. Many people know that football indeed is a funny old game and that no club is too big to go down, but if someone needs proof, they might as well read this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-13922463 Edited June 26, 2011 by Maksimov
Maksimov Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Hmmm... Didn't see anything posted about this and after I posted a thread about this(from a different point of view, mind you) and of course you beat me to it. Anyway...the mighty do fall sometimes.
Maksimov Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Sorry Maks, didn't see this one Why would you apologise? You didn't see it because I was still writing it while you posted yours.
Phillip Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Hmmm... Didn't see anything posted about this and after I posted a thread about this(from a different point of view, mind you) and of course you beat me to it. Anyway...the mighty do fall sometimes. A sad day for me, as they are my favourite Argie team. Crespo is a River Plate guy, I believe.
Maksimov Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Crespo is a River Plate guy, I believe. He did play for them. As did Batistuta(who I think was even better than Crespo and I rate Crespo VERY highly) and several other world class Argentinians.
HazardsLeftPeg Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 That should teach you for coming up with a thoughtful opening post.
Spiller86 Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Wow. Time to pick the bones for some young talent then? Then again they were relegated so maybe they're not so talented.
geezer Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 Why would you apologise? You didn't see it because I was still writing it while you posted yours. I was referring to my psychic powers. They must be on the wane - never saw that one coming :D
dkw Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Blimey, didnt expect this. Its like Man Utd or Arsenal getting relegated.....what a beautiful thing that would be.
Cam Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Blimey, didnt expect this. Its like Man Utd or Arsenal getting relegated.....what a beautiful thing that would be. United went down to Blue Square Premier in one of my Chelsea games on...I think it was Football Manager 2008... It was funny for the first couple of relegations, then sad for the next one, then funny again for the last. Don't know how it happened really...it was gradual. But back in reality, this was really surprising. It's hard to believe such a big club in their league can't do enough over the course of an entire season to stay in the top league.
Scott Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Sad day. Not only Crespo You may recognize a few of these names. Batistuta Matias Almeyda Ariel Ortega Roberto Ayala Marcello Gallardo Juan Pablo Sorin Juan Pablo Angel Mario Yepes Esteban Cambiasso Javier Mascherano - OK 1 turd. Gonzalo HiguaÃn Radamel Falcao Alexis Sánchez Marcelo Salas Claudio Caniggia Viva River, f8ck Boca.
mad_mac Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Astonishing! I like watching some of the South American games, and obviously River plate were always a huge team! Hope they make a bounce back soon
Englishman Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Looks like they are too big to go down after all! http://aol.sportingnews.com/soccer/story/2011-07-26/argentine-league-reorganization-plan-could-save-river-plate-club
andy Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I love this story, but I would be mad if it happened to our league though. Only one team have this kind of power in England and that would be Man Utd, I am sure Fergie would pull a few strings and hey presto they are back in the big time ! I supose you can also say that Liverpool have did somehting similar with UEFA, i.e were able to change the rules to enable them back into the Champions League. Perhaps one day we will be a "big" club
Maksimov Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Looks like they are too big to go down after all! http://aol.sportingnews.com/soccer/story/2011-07-26/argentine-league-reorganization-plan-could-save-river-plate-club They will go down. It's just that if this plan does go ahead, they're guaranteed to be "promoted" after next season.
FBFunatic Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Better luck next time as all said. There things meant to be happy in unexpected way. hahha.. but they will make it in the season
Scooby Blue Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 (edited) This guy obviously felt the pain of relegation. Funny though   Do not watch if you're easily offended by bad language. Edited August 13, 2011 by Scooby Blue
