Posted July 17, 201113 yr If you were forced to sell 5 of our players this Summer - who would they be and why? I'm expecting the same names to crop up but I thought a good topic none-the-less (off season threads are desperate!!). 1. Malouda - had a great 09/10 but other than that he hasn't been the success we had hoped. Age is a factor too and he could be holding back some youngsters that may look elsewhere if he's still here into his 30's. 2. Mikel - I've never been impressed with him, I'm sure he has his good moments but I just don't see them. Maybe I'm missing something but he's only a back up option IMO. If we can get some £££ for him then I'd sell him. 3. Bosingwa - Total liability last season and very injury prone, maybe I'm being harsh in getting rid but at second choice RB- we could get some good money for him. Again it's his worth rather than his ability I'm looking at. 4. Kalou - he does crop up with some useful goals but he also misses enough chances which makes a difference to the PL standing at the end of the season. He's a nice guy but selling him to let someone else (a new player or a reserve/youth) play in that position appeals grately. A genuine right winger... I like to dream! Plus we could get some money for him... so it gets rid of a liability, frees up a position and gets up some money, good deal. 5. Turnbull - Nice guy but he's been less than impressive whenever I've seen him and we have better options now with this new kid we've signed. Of the usual suspects list I've left off Anelka and Paulo. If the former is willing to be a bit part player and not a starter the he's well worth keeping around. As for the latter well I think he'd make a good coach when his days are over and what can I say... I like him and his attitude. I suppose Yuri is on there too - but I def wouldn't get rid. Start him ahead of Malouda and Kalou and I think we'd have a great player. Of course my list does require an acquisition... Right winger perhaps...! Anyway, they'd be my choices if we had to sell 5 players. Your thoughts?
July 17, 201113 yr Malouda, Anelka, Kalou, Ferreria, Essien Though I'd also be tempted to let Benayoun, Zhirkov and Drogba go as well. Edited July 17, 201113 yr by BlueSkies
July 17, 201113 yr 1. Kalou - Impact sub at best, he always does brilliant until its time to deliver the final ball and it doesnt seem to get any better. 2. Turnbull - Not impressive at all and seems to be a liability back there. 3. Malouda - Great guy and loves Chelsea but I want to see something new out there, since 09/10 he hasnt really been the same. Zhirkov if given the chance and if he can stay fit could be one hell of a player. 4. Anelka - Still a great player but I feel we need to get rid of one of Anelka or Drogba to make way for the likes of Sturridge and perhaps Lukaku. 5. Mikel - As Gem I never really been impressed by him, hes still a young lad but I don't know if hes got it in him to be a world class holding midfielder, there is better out there. I didnt pick Bosingwa to go out there because I feel he should get a second chance after a pre-season and that, he does look a bit better already the little we saw from him against portsmouth and we all remember how he did against Messi before if I remember correctly. July 17, 201113 yr Malouda - just doesn't look the same player he looked the season before last, frustrates me with his greediness Mikel - just hasn't advanced and personally I don't get what he does Hilario - love the guy, hes a great person but he is a liability when he plays Bosingwa - Just not the same player he was when he first arrived, seems to run nowhere these days and loses possession far too often Anelka - I think hes been well worth what we paid for him but his age is the reason I would get rid and far too often he goes missing in games I was tempted to put Kalou in over Anelka, but Kalou is younger and is a great player to bring off the bench. Now I wouldn't say just get rid they all need maybe except 1 or 2 need replacing if we are to sell. Edited July 17, 201113 yr by Bobbywoodhogan
July 17, 201113 yr Kalou Paulo Ferriera Zhirkov Essien (I would have let him go even before the unfortunate injury) Hilario
July 17, 201113 yr Malouda - Just feel like we could do better on the left; it might not be Zhirkov, but it's certainly not Florent Bosingwa - Liability Essien - Hasn't been at his best lately, and with this latest injury he's unlikely to get back there Turnbull - See Bosingwa Drogba/Kalou - We need a striker that's happy to be an impact sub. Drogba would be the preferred choice, but I'm not sure he'd be happy to take a reduced role, in which case we'll have to stick with Kalou. If Kalou's not happy to do it either (because lets face it, with the exception of Liverpool, United, Arsenal and City he'd walk into pretty much any Premiership team and get 30 games a season) then let them both go.
July 17, 201113 yr 1. Turnbull - We just don't do anything with him and the quality just doesn't seem to be there. Hilario is different class I feel and we got this Courtois fellow now. 2. Anelka just because he has no real place in the team anymore. One of the classiest players in Prem but would be better off somewhere he's the numero uno. 3. Malouda is one of the best left sided players in the prem but can't see the connection between him and Torres. 4. Paulo. Great servant for the club but lacks the pace. Bossy, Ivan is better duo I feel. 5. Zhirkov. World class leftback IMO but I just don't see him succeed in the Prem. He'd better off somewhere he can talk to his teammates. Next stop Russia. I decided to give Mikel and Kalou another chance because they have shown very much loyalty to the club and much patience sitting on the bench and they are still young boys.
July 17, 201113 yr Malouda, Anelka, Kalou, Bosingwa (Id keep PF and sell Bosingwa, because we might get a decent fee for him), Turnbull Edited July 17, 201113 yr by german-blue
July 17, 201113 yr Lets get rid of all our squad players. That will be fun. Then all come back moaning in the new season how we miss these squad players, thats a deal!

July 17, 201113 yr Author Then all come back moaning in the new season how we miss these squad players, thats a deal! It's only a fictitious question, a bit of a time filler in the off-season. I do say "if you were forced to" - squad size isn't relevant in the context of my question. You know what, never mind, it was just a bit of fun. Edited July 17, 201113 yr by Gem
July 17, 201113 yr Malouda? Kalou? 2 of our leading goalscorers last season, surely not! When those two are two of the leading goal-scorers it just underlines the problems we clearly had last season!! Good thread Gem. My list would be: 1. Zhirkov. He hasn't settled and IMO, never will. Just doesn't look the kind of quality wide player we need and as we have three excellant left backs, he'll never get a game there either. 2. Malouda. Too inconsistent and I think we've seen the best of him. He doesn't fit in to our best starting 11 these days and I don't seehim as an impact sub either. 3. Drogba. Time to move on and make way for the future. 4. Mikel. Not 100% on this one. I would be if Essien hadn't got injured again but with Essien out we may need him. But if we sign Parker or A N Other, then I would still offload Mikel as we don't need what he has to offer (very little). 5. Turnbull. Nothing like good enough to be relied upon at any time. He's an "Arsenal type" keeper.
July 17, 201113 yr In a lot of cases it would depend on who we bring in - yes, I know we're supposed to ignore squad size, but selling Malouda (for instance) only makes sense if we're signing someone good enough to start regularly on the left wing. 1. Anelka - Given what he did at Bolton last year, Sturridge deserves a shot at the right-sided forward slot, and Nic seems to be winding down. 2. Bosingwa - or Ferreira; one backup right-back who's not good enough to start regularly is useful, two is a bit redundant 3. Zhirkov - hasn't settled, and isn't a necessity at either of his positions 4. Hilario - isn't such a good backup keeper that he's worth spending a foreign-grown slot 5. Malouda - IF one of our major signings can play left wing; otherwise, the Malouda from Carlo's first season and the first three months of last year would easily be our starter there, so I'm reluctant to sell. Swap in Kalou in that case.
July 17, 201113 yr Lets get rid of all our squad players. That will be fun. Thats why I said on my list that these players have to be replaced we suffered last seaosn cause we trimmed our squad far too much
July 17, 201113 yr If I had to let go of 5 players: 1.Alex-Quality, but injury prone and wasted as backup. Last chance to get some money for him 2.Ferreira- Would rather he stayed and did his badges 3.Hilario- Same as Ferrieira 4.Zhirkov- No role for him here, never will be one. 5.Anelka- is a striker.

You know what, never mind, it was just a bit of fun. Your right, sense of humor breakdown at my end. Soz. I couldnt honestly think of 5. The only 2 I can think off is Turnbull (can see any place for him at the club now) and possibly Zhirkov (just hasnt settled). The rest are as good a player as we can hope for as squad players. July 17, 201113 yr Worst reason ever Nope. I was actually going to write "was club top scorer last season" :D
July 17, 201113 yr Nope. I was actually going to write "was club top scorer last season" :D Yeah, thats worse.

I think that list is spot on, for me Drogba and Malouda have still a lot to offer. What if Torres doesn't find his form again next season and we haven't got Didier. Also Kalou for me has always been a brilliant impact player and if he is happy to stay on the bench i say keep him.
July 17, 201113 yr Those putting Essien on their list - I think it's being a bit optimistic thinking anyone is going to buy him during the summer bearing in mind the condition he's in!!! Edited July 17, 201113 yr by Nibs
July 17, 201113 yr 1. Anelka. Gone backwards since 08/09. Lazy attitude and only performs once in a blue moon, which holds our young players back. Plays way too deep (like a holding midfielder) which is detrimental to our play. 2. Turnbull. Not good enough for us IMO and with Hilario signed up for another year and this new kid signed as well as others coming through, it would be best for both parties to see him go IMO. 3. Bosingwa - More of a luxury player to be honest, great bombing forward but a liability at the back, we haven't beaten one top team with him in the side which speaks volumes. Would be better deployed as a wing back in a 5-3-2 for another team. 4. Hilario - Surplus to requirements as well. 5. Ferreira - Been a great servant to the club, but at 32 I think the least he deserves is first team football, he simply can't cut it at this level now and doesn't have the legs, great crosser of the ball though. I wouldn't mind Malouda and Lamps calling it a day as well, but that would leave us way short with numbers and experience. I think our squad is way smaller than that of our rivals and feel we need at least 2 or 3 more signings this summer as well as some youth players being drafted into the first team. I think Bertrand and Billy Clifford are ready for the step up. And Josh and PVA need more first team opportunities, whether it be Mickey Mouse Cup or the league. Arsenal usually always play their youth team in the CC and I feel we should do what we did last year in blending youth with experience
