Whilst I think AVB appears to be out his depth and don't think he is the manager for a job as big as this, I do feel sorry for him in a way. I'll probably get slated for saying this but I actually hope we don't get top 4 whatever the implications are. There are big problems at this club from top to bottom and that has been the reason why we have under-achieved with Roman's wealth. I said just after City were taken over by the Sheikhs and even this Summer I would be willing to bet they win more trophies than we ever did because they had a plan and stuck to it. The owners identified their manager and stuck with him, they also invested in the youth and infrastructure of the club and as much of a c**t as Garry Cook was he and the City board always listened to the fans and never ostracised them in the way our board has with our fans.

I feel that if we were to get top 4 now, this vicious cycle would just continue, AVB will get sacked, Malouda and old guard given new contracts and then the everyday struggle continues with the next manager who will face the same problems. I feel that not making the CL would be the wake up call the fans, board and club as a whole need.

I couldn't care less if it means we are midtable ala mid 90s. We need to get rid of this player-power culture at the club, that is far more important that winning any trophy and I feel finishing outside the top 4 could be the catalyst for that.

I'll probably be slated and be told I'm not a loyal fan for not wanting us to get top 4, but I just want what is best for this club and I don't finishing 4th in the long term would be good for us, let the board answer to Roman and his advisors when we miss out on £40m per year, at least we'll still have a club, the precarious position of Rangers and Portsmouth should make us realise it won't be the end of the world.

I'd love to see us miss out on £40million pounds and miss out on having big players come and sign for us in the summer......

We all know that there is going to be a mass clear out in the summer, regardless of whether we finish 4th or not, I really can't see any good coming out of missing out on the top 4.

Also, I'd rather we weren't in the EuroDisney Cup, which would happen should we finish 5th, it's just the European version of the Carling Cup, i.e pointless.

If missing out on the top four means bringing in some promising, young and hungry players, then I am

all for it, no superstars, no mercenaries, no has-beens.

We can bounce back - depending on the board.

No, a thousand times no.

I want the best for the club every single season. Myself, I think it's madness to want anything else. And I think it's arrogance to assume success will return, once it's lost. Not criticizing anyone here, mind, just trying to show how strongly I feel about it.

If we don't make 4th, so be it. But I won't be hoping for it. I'll be hoping for 4th or higher, the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Such as Hazard, Neymar, Lucas Moura? Do you really think any of them will want to join us if we don't get CL football next season?

I would never say I wanted Chelsea to finish out of the top five, but I do think it's time for the team to be stripped down to the bones and rebuilt from the bottom up. This has to be done this summer. There have been too many different managers with different systems that each brought in their own players until now the current squad is a complete hodgepodge that just will not function.

If AVB is the man to rebuild the squad to his own style then fine I'm OK with that. No manager will win anything with this squad I'm afraid.

I doubt we'd get any of them with the Champions League football to be honest.

Spurs had a season away from the Champions League, as a matter of fact, they've had decades without it, they just

built up a decent side.

There is no reason why we can't do the same.

We need to prove we can challenge, without spending millions on superstars.

So you want to not qualify for the Champions League, and you want to rebuild the squad without spending money on star players?

Any other hurdles you'd like to place in the way of success? I mean, your scenario makes it bloody hard! I don't understand the point of it.

I've never said I didn't want to qualify, all I was saying is that if it meant bringing in some harder working players, who care, and want to contribute to

a future, then it wouldn't be the end of the world if we didn't qualify for the champions league, bringing in some youngsters doesn't mean we have to spunk

150 million in the transfer window.

We've just got to act a bit responsible in the transfer market, (i.e not turning our nose up at the thought of paying 8 million on Scott Parker).

Success can wait.

then it wouldn't be the end of the world if we didn't qualify for the champions league

Perhaps not, but it would be close. Playing in the CL every season is absolutely critical to our business model. Without it, our chances of complying with FFP is severly compromised.

Surely the best result would be to finish 4th and then rebuild over the summer, everyone knows we need to get rid of some players I dont think it would help at all coming 5th.

Of course I want us to finish in the top four.

First, if we are going to have a huge personnel turnover and essentially sign most of a new squad then not being in the Champions League is only going to hinder us in our search to sign the top talent. We have enough trouble attracting the players we want (Robinho, Modric...) without being out of European competition. Otherwise we will be rebuilding with the same good-but-not-great players (Meireles, Cahill...) who aren't going to get us playing at a higher level than we are now.

Secondly, if we don't finish in the top four then Tottenham almost certainly will. I'm not living with that knowledge...

If we finish out of the top 4 then so be it, part of me would love the away legs in the Europa league!

Not to disrespect any other fans, but I supported Chelsea long before the success and if we had no success I'd still support the club!

We'd def find out just how good AVB is, any signings would have to be of the second tier variety and at least we wouldnt have any chance on blowing 80m on Hulk. Seriously though now we've entered and are thought of as a top tier club we need to strive to retain that position at all costs, climbing up there again will be all the harder without the full use of Romans cash. Maybe some would be happy to have the club back to how it was , not winning much for many years even being grateful when we reach 42 points ... they weren't all good times and only rose coloured spectacles really paint them that way. We now aspire to bigger things as a club and Champions League (no matter how much we say we hate it) is part of that equation, losing that could set the club back many years one that we may not recover from. We need all players and manager on board now for what is the biggest 11 matches of our recent history, come on Blues we can do it!

Surely the best result would be to finish 4th and then rebuild over the summer, everyone knows we need to get rid of some players I dont think it would help at all coming 5th.

The best course would be to win everything and rebuild over the summer.

Why do you have to lose? The need to rebuild is pretty obvious, I should think.

Perhaps not, but it would be close. Playing in the CL every season is absolutely critical to our business model. Without it, our chances of complying with FFP is severly compromised.

The major debt we had on our last statement was from

1. buying Luiz and Torres (71 million right there)

2. sacking Carlo and then buying out AVB from Porto (probably another 20 million)

Missing out on the CL would be bad. Very bad. But if we are dumping most of the major salaries on our books this summer, it wont hurt us as much as some thing. And right now, if that were to happen and Roman decided to keep AVB, heads will have to roll. They will surely be all the highest earning heads on the squad.

Take out these one-off losses, and trim the wage budget by 1/3 or so, and things might be much rosier financially.

Now, the flipside is, of course, a case like Liverpool's. They missed out on Europe and have been clawing back for 2+ years with no success.

Surely the best result would be to finish 4th and then rebuild over the summer, everyone knows we need to get rid of some players I dont think it would help at all coming 5th.

In an ideal world yes but it appears half the team can't be arsed because they won't be around next season to play in it.

I hope we finish in the top four and truth be told before today I was thinking we could crack the top three if we were to turn it around for the rest of the season. Today's loss makes that much more difficult though.

Personally, I just want to see something from the board... AVB, for me should be given the chance to build his squad with our younger players and players he wants to bring in (please no 80m Hulk though)... I think the board needs to be cleared out first and foremost if they continue doing what they have. They were not patient with players like Sinclair, Borini, and a whole host of others... Let's play some of these younger players we have this season because frankly they can't do any worse than what we all saw today... We could all be very pleasantly surprised!

The major debt we had on our last statement was from

1. buying Luiz and Torres (71 million right there)

Actually not. The purchase price is spread over the length of the player contract.

I've posted a similar sentiment on various other threads this past month or so.

Whilst I always want Cfc to do as well as possible I do think a few years away from the real top echelon of football and away from the champions league nonsense could do the world of good.

Firstly the club will have no choice but to think longer term rather than season to season. Then perhaps sensible contracts may well be offered to younger ,hungrier players. The club would come back down to earth and things might become real again, we may actually become a likeable and proper club again. Who knows!?

Most of all though, some fans would have to revist expectations. It's become a cliche, but an element of our support now are spoilt brats. Perhaps these people would become more grounded and more realistic. These days hearing some of our fans talk on here , or on the radio often makes me cringe. Worst of all is actually going to the Bridge these days.....booing at half time?? It's awful. The team was booed at half time at AVBs first home game for f**ks sake. It's nauseating.

Wasn't so long ago the team used to get cheered off at half time if they weren't losing!!!!

I see the logic. Before FFP I could agree with you. A season where we were forced to play our youngsters and not have unlimited ambition in the transfer market, might have been decent.

But in these days where missing out on one year with FFP is a downwards spiral into several years of doing that, then no, we simply can't afford to miss out.
