Europa League Winners To Get Champions League Spot.

Featured Replies

I think this is a great idea, now everybody will take it a bit more seriously.

It's also been suggested that the winners won't take away a spot from a team that finishes in the final Champions League spot in their league.

So in the future if an English team wins the Europa League we could have 5 teams in the Champions League the following season.

Whilst in theory its a good idea, my concern is that the Europa League will become an even bigger joke. Everyone wants the champions league so why not make the Europa League a qualifying tournament is how it might be seen.

I've worded this badly but in short winning a tournament should be incentive enough. Not having an extra 'incentive' by qualifying for a bigger better version of it.

Question is say for arguments sake Spurs win the Europa League but finish 5th in the league, do they then take the place of the team finishing fourth (Arsenal) or is there a place "reserved" in the Champions League for the Europa Cup winner regardless of which country they are from.

If this is the case, which countries loses one of it's Champions League places to accommodate the EL winners?

I would imagine it would be the same situation as last year with us, the winner would get the place ahead of the 4th place team.

Looks like Tottenham and Liverpool now have a way to get into the Champions League!

So long as they don't come up against Basel  :laugh2:

I think European football needs to undergo wholesale reform:

Champions League: Is a good format and little needs tinkering. But I would say don't make 3rd place group teams go into the Europa League. it sort of devalues the Europa league and there is the bizarre scenario where a team that wants to win it plays teams that are just there but are far better than them (Us in every game up until the final). Also change the name to The European Cup to stop the pedantic moaners getting uptight about teams who didn't win their domestic league competing. The irony in this is that it is normally Liverpool and Man U fans who in 05 and 99 had not won the league the previous season.

Europa League: 32 teams in the 1st proper round, some primarily rounds for the 1st place Moldovan side vs the 2nd place Slovakian side. Make each round 1 leg, like the FA Cup. This competition needs less games with more intensity. Getting to the final is a right old slog. Keep the new reform where the winners get a CL place.

Bring back the Cup Winners Cup. It can have the same format to the my EL format with 32 teams. A lot of intensity in the games and a foreseeable pathway to glory. Again the winners could get a CL place (or qualifying).

The winners of the CWC play the EL winners for a place in the Super Cup final against the CL winners. The winners of the Super Cup go to the Club World Cup.

All in all, this would give value to more competitions than just the CL and more teams will try and win not only the Europa League or the CWC as 1. It is a trophy 2.You can get to the CL 3.You can become Champions of the World, but they may also try and win their domestic cups as it is a pathway to the Champions League.
