Suarez Injured in Training

Featured Replies

Will be interesting to see if he misses the World Cup. If he does, who will do the diving for Uruguay?

Luis Suarez injures knee ahead of World Cup - Uruguay media

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has injured his knee in training and could be a doubt for the World Cup, according to media reports in the country.

The 27-year-old Liverpool striker will have keyhole surgery on Thursday to repair damage to his meniscus, says Uruguayan broadcaster Tenfield.

Estimates on his recovery range from 15 days to a minimum of three weeks.

Uruguay play England on 19 June in Sao Paulo after their Group D opener against Costa Rica on 14 June.

  • Luis Suarez was sent off on his international debut in February 2007, after being shown a second yellow card for dissent in a friendly against Colombia.

Suarez finished as the Premier League's leading scorer this season with 31 goals, despite missing the opening five matches through suspension.

His goals helped Liverpool to rise from a seventh-place finish in 2012-13 to second in 2013-14 and won him both the Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers' Association player of the year awards.

He also finished as top-scorer in the South American section of World Cup qualifying, scoring 11 goals as Uruguay finished fifth in the continent's nine-team group.

Uruguay subsequently secured their place at the finals in Brazil by beating Jordan 5-0 in a play-off.

Suarez is a proven performer at major tournaments, helping Uruguay to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and scoring four times as his side won the Copa America the following year.

His partnership with Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is a key part of coach Oscar Tabarez's plans.

That hand ball still irks me, especially as he was paraded as a hero afterwards. You like to see the best players at the WC (which is why its a shame Ibra, Cech, Bale, Terry etc aren't going) and he is undoubtedly a great player… but his on-field antics are just not acceptable on the biggest stage either. I don’t wish injury but if he doesn’t play then the WC will be a fairer place because of it.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if he misses this world cup and then for some reason misses the next one, and his last WC game ever ends up being the one he got sent off in.

Now THAT would be karma.

I'll take take delight in a player's misfortune through injury, but if there was one player I could not bring myself to feel sorry for then that player would be Suarez.

Out of all of Suarez antics this one doesn't bother me at all, well apart from his celebrating afterwards, that was uncalled for. I have seen plenty of players in the past do this and people just got on with it. Chamberlain did the same to us not so long ago and nobody moaned at him. If Gyan had scored the pen nobody would have said anything. What i thought was pathetic was Ghana and many other people saying they should be put through because they were cheated. They weren't cheated at all. Suarez was sent off, they had a penalty, they then missed that penalty. I also don't remember Suarez paraded as a hero. The media, football pundits and Africa were disgusted with him.

I agree with your other points though, his on field antics are not something i want to see in the biggest sports competition in the world and the World Cup would be a fairer competition without him.

The punishment still didn't fit the crime and I'm not just saying this because its Suarez (back in 2010 I didn't know Suarez and didn't know how detestable and unsportsmanlike he was)

A 122nd minute Red Card does not carry the same weight as a place in the World Cup semis

He apparently confirmed to Uruguayan TV he is fit for the Worldcup, hope he doesnt make the England game.

He won't be fit for the World Cup, but they will play him no matter what. It could make things difficult for Liverpool next season.

It wasn't just a red card though, Ghana had a penalty, they missed it. It's been done before but Suarez is the only player i have ever seen get criticism for it.

Oxlade-Chamberlain (or was it Gibbs) basically got away with it with no punishment.
