Jose would have made me great

Featured Replies

This comes from a comment from a conversation with Loz.......no, even Loz doesn't believe he'd have made it if Jose had been his manager.

Jose is brilliant at turning certain players into absolute winning machines, many a player has stated that he's the best manager they've ever worked with.  So which of our former players would Jose have worked wonders with, who if they'd played for Jose could have played in our current team.

The one that was mentioned by Loz was Wisey and I totally agree, I think Wise had the ability and mentality to have been an incredible Mourinho player (he was pretty magic as it was).  Are there any players that you think were "alright" in their day but would have been brilliant if they'd played for Jose?

Not off the top of my head, but I can think of a few who he would have sold - Zola for instance. Hasselbaink (think he left before Jose?).

Always thought JM would have liked Mark Hughes. A real battler up front and he could play as well. Hughes was brilliant as it was, so I'm not sure if he would have improved him, but he could have played for a Mourinho team.

by the time we got hughes he was only really heading downward, i don't think jose would have improved him really.

Le Saux possibly. Jose does like a good fullback.

He would have had his work cut out trying to get Dan Petrescu to defend. Don't think Pat Nevin would have been his kind of player neither LeBeouf. Someone like Eddie Newton perhaps who was a good solid player Jose could have got him to the next level.

I know some might laugh at this one but I reckon Jody Morris would have thrived under Mourinho. Morris was an undisciplined footballer with loads of talent that was sadly never fulfilled.

I've always wondered how he would have performed under someone like Jose who has a knack for getting the best out of his players. It might have failed for all I know but the fact that we'll never know always makes me ponder.

Wise would have thrived under Jose! Great leader and he always left no stone unturned on the pitch.

Morris is a great shout.

Interested that someone picked out Robbie D, I can't see him being aa Jose type player so interested to know what makes you suggest him?

Graham Stuart would have been interesting, I think Jose would have loved him. Also Steve Clarke is definitely a Jose type, very similar to ivanovic.

I bet he would have loved some of our players from the Gullit/Vialli era. Di Matteo, Wise and Poyet :)

Do people think he would have won the league in 1998/99 if he was in charge? It kind of mirrors our season last season where we didn't have enough goals from our strikers.

One of the first players that he showed the door to was Gronkjaer, there would have been some exasperated looks in the dugout for sure.

I think we would have won had Laudrup not thrown a strop about squad rotation and Casiraghi not sustained his career ending injury.

It left us too light on decent attacking options and most teams would struggle losing two key players like we did that season.

A massive "what if" season in our history.

One of my favourite seasons growing up. Remember the controversy Wisey caused when he bit Marcelino!

Shame, I thought Laudrup would have been a fantastic addition to our squad but with the benifit of hindsight, he was on the decline.

Not sure Casiraghi would have scored enough goals but he would have been useful to go with Flo, Zola and to a lesser extent Vialli.

As you say, it probably is one of the biggest "what if" seasons in our history.

Casiraghi was playing okay despite his lack of goals, it wasn't Chris Sutton bad where it seemed like we was playing with 10 men because he was offering nothing at all, it was a few years ago now but I remembering him (Casiraghi) still being a bit of a handful and holding the ball up well and despite the lack of goals was still bringing others into the game.

He'd scored his first for us and then got his injury, an injury which if he suffered today he would probably have recovered from.

Flo and Zola were wonderful players but neither were natural goalscorers, I think they both had a strike rate of something close to a goal every 4 games... If we had, had a Jimmy Floydd Hasselbaink type player that season I reckon we would have won.

Laudrup was probably the most naturally gifted footballer ever to pull on the blue shirt , incredible football technique and close control .

Would have been fun to watch Jose try and manage Osgood , Chopper , Baldwin etc...

Andy Townsend ....maybe

Vinny Jones ...........he was a much better player than people give him credit for . Think Jose would have turned him in to an incredible holding midfield player. The Matic for that era ...

Damien Matthew .......be interesting to see how he would have played and progressed under Jose

And our assistant manager going inside for being a nonce and Bates let him rejoin the club. That was a disgraceful decision as the girl was a family friend and Rix knew exactly how old she was. (Sorry for going off topic). Still have nightmares about that Leicester game.

I'll admit that I was a bit too young to know about or care about the off field politics at the time (I was about 13/14 years old) but I'll agree with you about the Leicester game, one of my most vivid Chelsea memories seeing the late equaliser curl into the net, despite the defensive rock that was Michael Dubbery being bought on to shore up the defense.... I cut rather distraught figure come full time in the Shed Upper that afternoon.

As good as winning the league in 2005 was hand on heart we all knew it was inevitable it was going to happen. But the 1998- 99 season if we won the league then it would have meant more to me. It was our best team for nearly 30 years and we only lost 3 games all year and one of them was the first game of the season. Just some bad luck and we drew quite a few games but the numbness and shellshock after the Leicester game was the worse feeling i've ever had after any Chelsea match.

Even then we came so close. Leboeuf missed a penalty in a 0-0 with Blackburn that we completely dominated. A draw with Arsenal where Vieira hacked down Zola, the most blatant penalty I've ever seen that wasn't given. Steve f***** Guppy!

I'd like to have seen Jose's face when Ossie, Greavsie and Hasselbaink were all standing on the halfway line with their hands on their hips watching the opposition's attack.

We had a brilliant season in 1998-1999, but our first few games of the season is where we let ourselves down unfortunately. Had we won that season, Man Utd's treble would never have occurred but I guess hindsight is a wonderful thing.
