Football pays its respect - 9.11.2001

9.11.2001 - Roma vs Real Madrid, Stadio Olympica
Really? A football match? On day when thousands of people lost their lives, thousands of families were broken, countless people lost their friends and the world watched helplessly. It is hard to imagine that the players were putting on their kits, the fans were buying hot dogs and beer, the referees were checking their watches for accuracy and picking up a football and walking across the pitch to make their way to the center.

Stranger things have happened in football. The American and European unions were in constant discussions to decide whether these matches should be allowed to go on or not. Eventually it was decided and this was only one of the two football matches that were allowed to go on that day. It was decided this was the safest way to go because all flights were cancelled and there was no way that fans could go back.

In England, players stand around the center circle, before the match begins, to pay their respects. In Europe, however, they give a minute of the match away. As soon as the whistle blows, the ball is moved just half a yard and the players just hold their positions in silence for a minute of the match.
The match was played. Madrid won 2-1 after an epic encounter.

Horrific things happen all the time.  There are loads of tragedies that have resulted in a greater number of deaths and normal life goes on.  Just because this one occurred in America, the world is meant to stop is it?  I don't mean to be harsh - it was an awful thing.  But to think that normal life shouldn't continue is naive.

I know where you're coming from BQ. I don't like, and sometimes company depending don't like admitting, that I find this newer way of grieving difficult. That is for me the floral tributes at road sides, now sometimes renewed year on year and or a permanent plaque or painting. I did think the ghost bike project worthwhile though.

We know you're right about being selective as per the well discussed Hillsborough attention, which is apt if other similar tragedies are acknowledged, but let's not go there again now.

Life does go on and that's not being callous, it's realising life should be lived having been promoted by someone's passing and an indicator of the human resilience and will to not give up.

In everyday life people cross our paths and many of them have suffered dreadful things, the encouraging thing is we would often never even know.

Welcome Grisbo, perhaps you could help us by sharing the significance of this to you.

Cheers.

Speaking of 9/11, I was think about the people who were late that day, or called in sick...........Must mess with your mind that.

Have you seen the film 'Sliding Doors'? The guy from 'Bread' had a near death experience and felt compelled, at personal financial cost, to make the film (think that's right). It makes you think. Also, ' The Butterfly Effect', although American mainstream, with a pretty boy lead, was on my mind for weeks after seeing it.

I often refer to "Sliding Doors" moments.  If we'd bought that house rather than this one, got a different job, not gone to that party..... etc etc.  Does your head in doesn't it?

The creator of Family Guy, Seth MacFarlane was actually supposed to be on one of the planes that crashed into one of the towers. He got drunk the night before and missed his flight because he was hungover and his travel agent listed his flight 10 minutes later than it should have been. He got to the counter and they told him he had missed his flight by 10 minutes.

Who would have thought that getting drunk would save your life ?

Ex Sex Pistol John Lydon, actress Kim Cattrall and 60's group the 4 tops were all supposed to be on the doomed Lockerbie flight.

Lydon got delayed, Cattrall over ran doing gift shopping and the 4 tops over slept after a late recording session the night before...all missing the flight.

Fine margins.

Apparently some of the writers from Frasier were on one of the planes.

As for 'Sliding Doors', will keep a look out for that, sounds interesting.

Don't forget 'The Butterfly Effect'

Also Michael Jackson was supposed to of been inside the twin towers when the crashes happened but overslept

Also, at least one of the hijakers was supposed to have been inside the plane, but is somehow still alive and well in the Middle East.

But thaaaaat's another story...

And they found his passport just slightly burnt on the pavement in NY, even though the plane was as good as vaporised on impact!

Ah yes, those passports these days. Quality!

Other things that were supposed to have been there that day but weren't include the plane in the Pentagon, video footage from some 95 cameras that record the Pentagon each day... and, of course, the icing on the cake, 'something' that would make this happen:

Okay, I had to contribute to the things missing that day since the topic had already started, but I'll stop now because this sad event has nothing to do with football and is a topic that should be discussed elsewhere. I was in New York that day, lived there for many years, love the city, and it sure was a sad day for the entire world and what was to follow after.

I disagree that this shouldn't be discussed here - lots of non-football things are discussed on this forum but maybe this thread should be moved to a different non-football area as the focus has shifted somewhat.  And I'm intrigued by what you have to say.  Do you mean that there is no footage of the Pentagon plane?  Sorry if you mean you don't want to discuss further - and of course I'll respect that if that is the case.

Strange that the OP has never come back to explain why he posted this now.

they found many many personal items from passengers of those planes.

Yes, I mean it should not be discussed here where we discuss football and should be moved. Not running away from the topic though, and NO, THERE IS NOT ONE VIDEO FOOTAGE ever shown of a plane hitting the Pentagon, even though there were 95 cameras recording. FACT! Also, not one piece of the plane ever found on site, because the plane "evaporated". Another fact! Each gas station has a camera, yet we don't have one showing such an event caused on one of the most important buildings in the world.

Something to think about.

But there must have been loads of eye-witnesses mustn't there?  Surely?

Don't know any so I wouldn't know. All I know is that the official story is so far from the truth that anyone who ever cared to listen to the details would be disappointed. And no, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I'm a very trustful person, but I'm also a critical thinker who will call you out on your bulls#$t and this whole story is total bulls#$t. Check what happened to that World Trade Center building number 7, and if you still buy the story, we shouldn't waste our time typing any longer.

Wow!  I've been vaguely aware of people thinking things don't add up but have never looked into it (I guess I thought that it was just people wanting to make a mystery when there wasn't one).  I will now - it sounds fascinating.

Out of the people I know very few believe the official story. And like I said, I was in New York when it happened, and many New Yorkers, together with the families of the victims, to this day are asking the congress for the truth, but I seriously doubt we'll get it.

If you are interested, and have 35 minutes, here is a great link on the subject for you:

And again, I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I do think with my own head, and when things don't add up, I don't need to believe just because the TV says so.
