Penalties - given vs not given

Featured Replies

Can we please discuss the topic of the thread which i believe is a very valid one and not the Matic red card.

Can someone do a rough calculation of how many points these missed penalties would add up to.

Cahill was also head locked vs Man U at the same time as Terry.  I dont know how that would work, can you win 2 penalties at once?

Without a lot of work Im probably not going to do I cant give you specifics, but I suspect your list would be doubled or more if we got all the major BPL missed penalties down.

Scott

Potential leg breakers happen every season in the premier league. To see a reaction like that is rare.

At the end of the day matic saw red (literally). From when he reached Barnes he should've thought.

1- I'm okay my leg is fine

2 - we have a game to win it's only 1-0

3 - we have a cup final next week

4 - my team need me for upcoming league games

I'm not defending Barnes in anyway. You just don't react. I always stress this to people I know. Don't react and put yourself in the dirt too. Think about the bigger picture.

To the letter of the law Matic had to go for that unfortunately, though there is something wrong with the law when he could have quite rightly have cheated and feigned injury(which is the reaction he will be told to do in future no doubt by Jose). We expect the referee to uphold the law for all teams.

Letter of the law? Who gets a red card for pushing a player in the chest? First time I've seen that law enforced so it must be a new one.

Pushing in the chest a red card?  More games would end 5v5 than 11v11 if that was how it was applied.  Our second league vs Liverpool would of seen the 2 goalies left on the pitch and no one else.

As for the penalties we have been on the back of some poor decisions this year, surprised Atkinson didn't book Costa for diving today to compound his poor afternoon.

This may be obvious, but it seems to me players of quality, like Costa, Hazard, can't play due to poor reffing. Hazard can't get into the game (PSG for example) and Costa is under fire if he's proactive. A good ref would once enhance play. Frustrating for us and must be for the players.

Im sorry, but if you have to go back 12 years to show the last time someone got a similar red, you've kind of proven the other persons point that its not typically a red card offense considering its probably happened more than a 1,000 times in the BPL since then.

That was just one match I could pull out for definite as I was there(my home town club) and probably on the picture. As we all know the game even 22yrs ago was a lot tougher but that red card stood. There are probably others which I aren't party to, I haven't said it was right, I'll just be very surprised if it is overturned. Even back in the 70s the retaliation was often seen as worse than the original offence.

Dumb Yank here. Can someone here explained what I missed in these two challenges?

Costa pushed in the box

Vurnon Anita gifted possession to Dzeko in the box and then clumsily brought the Bosnian down.

It appears to me that the Costa shout should be a PK. Sorry but Dzeko looked kinda of phoney. Hardly any contact, but that is a PK? WTF?

Unpopular opinion: I thought Costa was looking for that contact. He just stopped moving his legs and tipped over. The defender didn't even follow through to indicate a push, it looked more like he was using contact to keep Costa from cutting at goal.

Dzeko was tripped from behind. Sure he went over dramatically, but you're not staying on your feet if your leg gets pinned behind you by another person's body.

The handball looked as obvious as it gets though. He clearly uses his arm to shield the goal.

Just did a little breakdown of  games player per penalty  between then CL group stages and the BPL for the four pertinent clubs.  Interesting to see that aside from Chelsea, the stats are fairly similar and less then a factor of 1 game per penalty except for Arsenal who are higher in the BPL than the CL and Chelsea who are lower in the BPL than the CL by a factor of more than 10 games per penalty.

Games Per Penalty Awarded

Club   -   BPL   - CL

CFC   -   13     - 1.5

MCFC-   3.7    - 3

Arse   -   3.7    - 6

LFC    -  6.5    -  6

Stats can tell funny things but considering Chelsea have the best attack in the league, as measured by goals scored, it's hard to pin it on worse league performances.  Anyways, all things considered, that's one hell of a coincidence.

schweinsteiger got sent off for that in the euros some time ago. thought it was harsh at the time, but  yeah, that rule has been in place for ages

I find it unbelievable how many people are saying Matic's response was stupid, the guy nearly had his leg broken and his reaction was justified. It could have ended his career! and as for the referee, if you or me made that many mistakes in our jobs we'd be sacked! I don't believe theres a campaign against chelsea, I just don't think the FA have a clue what they are doing!

Guys, please let me know what penalty shout incidents we have had that I have missed on my list (colocinni handball was one I noticed in the thread)

I want to get the full facts and then I will find a way to get this into the press.

These statistics are outrageous and any discerning football fan, not just a chelsea fan, will recognise this.

The world should know this BS is happening and we can find a way of doing something about it if we work together. Let's try and help our team how we can! Less talk more action!

His reaction was incredibly stupid. He should have waited for their player to be carded/sent off and if then they didn't then fair play go mad.

Umm to be a pen it has to actually hit his arm first.

WTF BPL is the best in the world while the fa is the worst to Chelsea....Sad! It's sad too to watch those blaming comments here to Matic. Any player in his place will react like that.

That is why Matic went mad. The guy that was trying to injure our players throughout had just got away with another attempt to injure our players. Matic knew the ref was taking no action and he had enough of it.

It wasn't stupid it was a lapse of judgement! and completely justifiable lapse of judgement also Scott's right, he should have waited for a card that never came?

React like that on the pitch, even if he was justifiably angry about the tackle, and it's bound to get you into trouble. He's probably sitting at home now wondering 'why the f*ck did I do that?'

The much bigger concern for me is why the awful challlenge from Barnes that started it all went completely unpunished by Atkinson.
