Penalties - given vs not given

Featured Replies

I have seen some people say Chelsea shouldn't need the refs to give us penalties because we should be able to beat these teams without relying on penalties. That is partly true, but let's not forget, Liverpool had 12 penalties last season and if it wasn't for those penalties they would probably have got nowhere near the title.

Every team that competes for league titles rely on penalties to win games now and again.

Scott Liverpool were blowing teams away with or without the penalties. As were city. It's clear we don't attack relentlessly like they both did.

Look how many players city have in the box. We're forced to have Ivan to play as a striker jist to make up the numbers. Againsy Burnley at Home, we shouldn't need penalties to save our bacon. And with 10men, we really should be holding out for a win.

It's a major bonus though when you're the away team at Old Trafford and you get three penalties like Liverpool did last season. Or drawing with Fulham and you get a last minute penalty, like Liverpool did last season. Or get a couple of penalties against an awkward park the bus side like West Ham, like Liverpool did last season. That's six awarded penalties in three matches. You can't tell me they didn't have a big bearing on those results.

So in whose world, except Michael Oliver's, is this not a penalty?

And with the feel good factor after yesterday it's mostly been overlooked that, once again, we had a player wrongly booked for diving. Is that five now? In hindsight, it's a relief that Oscar wasn't sent off for being taken out Schumacher style.

I thought he was a reasonably decent ref until I saw that, he's clearly just as incompetent as the rest.

Gave him the benefit of the doubt as he's a young guy, but you'll rarely see such a blatant penalty not given.

Utterly ridiculous.

Fabregas x2 (Southampton away and Arsenal away)

Costa x2 (Burnley home and away)

What's the 5th one?

As for the Oscar one not being given, I can understand playing advantage but as soon Bellerin clears the ball from the line it's got to be a penalty. I'm staggered that none of the match day officials saw it or deemed it foul.

I think of yesterday's decisions Fabregas one and Oscars first probably would have been soft decisions. As would Cahill's handball that was unavoidable but the Ospina rugby tackle on Oscar was stone wall. Some of the people at my work are saying it's not a pen cause advantage was played. No it's a pen because Oscar was essentially rugby tackled by the keeper. He could have tried to slow himself down but instead went in with his head like a rhino. The ball been played already has nothing to do with it. It's like it I take a corner but a guy is pulled down whose nowhere near the ball just because he wasn't gonna get the ball doesn't mean it wasn't a pen.

Cesc I thought was a pen.

He didn't run into the challenge, there was clear contact and he went down.

Even if the ref didn't think it was a pen it clearly wasn't a dive going by the rule book.

Oscars first one looked worse in real time but slowed down there wasn't very much contact at all. The second one was a clear a penalty as you will see IMO.

For me the Cesc one wasnt a penalty, if that was given the other way around I would be furious. I think there were two decisions that could have ended in penalties and they were both sorta fifty-fifty. I think not giving either was a fair call.

It wasn't a dive either.

I disagree with that. Id call it a dive. But I guess perception of what is and what isnt a dive varies. To me it was much like the DiMaria incident against Arsenal. Yes he was touched, but the way he made a meal of it and tried selling it as more then a graze with a massive flop makes it a dive in my book and a fair yellow. Thinking back wasnt it Oliver in both matches? I think diving is a huge problem in modern football and Im a big fan of refs handing out yellow cards for situations like this

yeah id agree with the fabregas one and oscars first was the correct call, although honestly, he shouldve been booked for that. but ospina ramming into oscar is a penalty all day long

A huge problem in today's football is if the player doesn't go down he often doesn't get the penalty. This is why I think players go down easily nowadays, in Fabregas case yesterday he went down early but there was contact. However I don't think enough to give a penalty. I actually think Fab should have tried to stay on his feet and ride it out cause he'd have been in on goal. I think he was anticipating contact and the contact was minimal but he had committed to going over. I don't think in that case it's a dive or a penalty.

Seen all of them given, and not. However Ospina on Oscar was ridiculous, reminded me of Ba getting one in the chops up in Newcastle which we got nothing for. Unarguable (is that a real word?) in my humble biased opinion.

That's the only one that was nailed on and should have been given really.
