A fine commentator. Always remember one of his standard comments was 1-0! Sports commentary was his forte but could switch to commentating on news items when the need arose. He was highly praised for his sensitive and clear reporting of the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

I believe they have been good friends for decades. Looks like they have both just seen Andy Gorams ‘outfit’!😀

It is. Walter was assistant manager to Fergie for a while at Manchester United after being sacked by Everton and before his second stint at Rangers.

You're welcome mate. Had to check when Walter was at Old Trafford. Walter's assistant at Rangers during his first stint there was Archie Knox who had been Fergie's assistant at United. I guess the relationship with Walter and Fergie helped with the comings and goings.

I remember meeting Walter at Earl's Court station back in the late eighties on the way to a game at the Bridge. He took time to speak to Chelsea fans. He was asked which players Rangers were interested in signing! At that time he was assistant to Souness at Rangers.

I think Walter Smith was also assistant to Ferguson, when he was temporarily in charge of Scotland. After the death of  Jock Stein. Nov 1985 until the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
