March 21, 20188 yr If you had to choose between the two out-and-out centre forwards at Chelsea, who would you pick? Olivier Giroud or Alvaro Morata? Edited March 21, 20188 yr by GB Articles
March 22, 20188 yr Giroud is a true back to goal striker that fits what Antonio wants. Morata is not. He's not the worst in the world at holding the ball up, but if that's what Conte wants then Giroud is the answer. Who is the better out and out player is a different question entirely. Morata on his day is a better footballer than Giroud. So, if you want the person who fits Antonio's needs the answer is Giroud. If you want the better footballer who will look clumsy at times because he's asked to do something he's not comfortable with, but is capable of exceptional things: Morata. Lets face it, last summer, Morata was fairly highly sort after striker at Real Madrid, Giroud was an Arsenal bench-warmer. But it's not as black & white as that. The question is which striker do we prefer and I don't prefer Morata when he is at his sulky worst, whinging at refs and falling over on his arse. I think everyone has warmed to Giroud because he's a likeable bloke with a good attitude and he will get stuck in and give everything - he hasn't got the bad body language and permanent frown that Morata has had for months on end.
March 22, 20188 yr i struggle to see any team, let alone a team with our deficiencies, win anything other than the odd fa-cup (which of course is something, but shouldn't be our amibition level) with a striker like giroud up front. playing the frenchman, or any other archetypical targetman (big, strong, slow), makes defensive organization so much easier. if you break down the different dimensions a striker operates in, you have (simplified): a) crosses, b) with their back against the goal and c) the threat to run in behind the defensive line. with a player like giroud, you are basically forfeiting option c). teams are getting so well organized and defenders are getting so quick that against a typical target man, they can just push their defensive line up however high they like without having to worry. as for morata, he's been piss poor for a couple of months, but i still think we'll be better off as a team with him playing rather than giroud. morata can, and will, with his pace, stretch out the opposition, which will give much needed room for hazard, willian and our other players to work in.

I agree with your assessment. The problem is that Antonio desires that type of archetype targetman. It's what he wants and Giroud is the best option for now. If we want the best from Morata we need a free flowing game and midfielders that can transition the ball from defense to attack. We don't have that right now, so we need someone who can win headers and layoff to our attacking wings. Morata isn't as effective as Giroud in that regard. If Morata would sack up I think he could be very effective with his back to goal...I just don't think he knows how to play that way yet. No doubt Morata is more technical and quicker to attack the back line. But Conte doesn't seem to care about those aspects otherwise we woudl have kept Michy too...
March 23, 20188 yr Which are better, apples or oranges? Well, without apples we wouldn't have apple pie and cider, so the answer's apples obviously.
April 1, 20188 yr I like both players and glad we now have Giroud. I don't care which one of the two scores the winner v Spuds today at The Bridge!
