Saturday, 17th September 1983 saw us lose 2-1 away to Sheff Wed . It meant we dropped from 2nd to 6th in the table.

Clive Walker gave us an early lead in the  second minute,. However

Lyons in the 47th and Megson in the 84th minute saw us go down narrowly.
A crowd of 20,596 saw it.

I was there. I remember it was the first time I saw Pat Nevin, who came on as a sub. Not sure if it was his debut for us.

Funny that's one of the scores I always forget that season, probably as early on and at that time the season hadn't got into full swing

To think we lost away to Wednesday. Home to City and Grimsby!! And lost for the final time at Boro 2/1/84.      Strange we only took 1 point out 6 against Boro, yet the finished sixth from bottom.

Just checked, Pat was No 11 that day with David Speedie the sub.

The Middlesboro game was Clive Walkers final appearance for us. Oddly enough I thought he'd played on as a squad member through that season !

Next up, Huddersfield away on Saturday, 1st October 1983 at 3pm. Come on you Blues.

Brilliant thread.

I did Derby opening day then Gillingham away in the LC, then Brighton (was in the carriage next to the one where the poor bloke nearly had his head knocked off), skipped Blackburn away but did Cambridge at home (day after my 17th birthday) then skipped Gillingham at home. I remember being pissed off missing out on Sheff Weds away, couldn't make it for some reason, but never mind because I went to the enthralling 0-0 against Middlesbrough. I have no recollection of that match at all. Must have been as dull as it sounds.

Pick of those games so far -

Derby for the sheer surprise, can remember the buzz after that match. We were all a bit incredulous. Was it just one of those results or were we on to something?

Brighton for obvious reasons

Gillingham away was kind of fun. Good turn out. I went down early. Too early. Copper said to me "What are you the advanced guard?" I said to him "You wait, there'll be thousands of us here later." He laughed but I bet he wasn't laughing later. Loads of Chelsea there and quite a few in their end. Busy night for the OB.

I see Huddersfield away is coming up. Some poor bloke was kicked to death if I remember correctly. Him and his mate (both scarfers not firm) tried to get to their car, they made it but he didn't manage to get in whereas his mate did. That's how I remember it anyway. Sometimes those smaller provincial towns could be the worst places.

My missus is from Huddersfield. I always brought this up when the mother-in-law ever said anything about the behaviour of Chelsea fans.

Didn’t a Chelsea fan die at Birmingham one year?

Never been to St Andrews, but believe once in the 70s we got a bit of a hiding.

I went to that Huddersfield game and left the game early so I could get a train back to donny.i was walking up towards the train station when I passed. the aftermath of this chelsea poor chelsea fan incident.i noticed that he had chelsea club colours on which type of hit home with me one of the reasons why I never wore club colours at home or away games.

i allways thought that the chelsea fan had been stabbed to death going on what I was picking up from what the locals were saying around the area of the incident.

it was allways in back of my mind as to why/ how this chelsea fan was so far up leeds road ( if that was the road I was on ) before the game had finished .think I left with about 5mins to final whistle and it was quite a distance from the ground up thta road from my memory .

I also stopped wearing club colours too after the first year just too risky.

The only exception was Wembley for me.

When chelsea were  in division 2 I would get a 08:30ish inter city 125 from donny to London kingsX .The train came from Edinburgh and would also  stop at Newcastle ,York and Donny aswell as other stations .One thing that I noticed back then was the amount of chelsea fans that got on this train at above stations .at times there would be anything upto 15/20 then other times 5/6 or 7 .some wore club colours some did not,but I rarely ever saw fans from likes of arsenal, hammers,y*ds,qpr and these teams were all in division one back then.

the way to clock what team whoever followed back then was by the small round badges that all and sundry wore .i got to know CFC lads from Newcastle, darlington, hartlepool,Leeds,York, grimsby, pboro via the train to the smoke .

the above tide did change after the premiership started up ,as i then saw likes of arsenal ,y*ds and hammers shirts on the same London kingsX train as me and the train back up north aswell.

maybe the arsenal,y*ds,hammers fans above was allways on my trains to London and I was not on full defcon 5 mode, who knows.

Have never worn a replica shirt to a game.

Always thought you were far more vulnerable away from the bulk of Chelsea fans, going back to the motor. If it looked dodgy it would be head down, look like you know where your going, and no talking and giving away your accent.

Had close shaves at Old Trafford and Leicester years back.

I used to like the Union Jack badges with Chelsea running through the middle.

I occasionally wear a faded to purple sink scarf from the 70s to games.

Completely off topic but having a trial separation from the Fuhrer and moved back to Wandsworth yesterday, as the crow flies probably a mile from SB. There’s a flat roof above my balcony which Im gonna try and get onto, reason being reckon you can see the floodlights from there!
