Chelsea's past striker ratios

Featured Replies

Dixon could look really clumsy at times and there were times when shall we say he wasn't universally popular and was almost border line boo-boy.  I stand by that technically Durie was better he wasn't an out and out goalscorer that Kerry was.
They were both centre forwards in an era when centre forwards were like the lead singer in a rock band and finishing was king. When it came to putting the ball in the net Durie was the fella polishing Kerry's boots out of respect. Post his stomach injuries Kerry was never the same but in his prime he was head and shoulders above Durie.

Yes but when was his prime 84-85 ? because after that his goal scoring record isn't great. Both of his best goal scoring league seasons where when we were in the second division. Durie scored 51 in 123 games as a supporting striker that isn't bad. Between 85 and 89 Dixon scored in the league 35 in 117 games that's a poor return . He got dropped as well because he was playing badly. As I said I like Kerry Dixon and he's up there as a legend but there were times when he was crap and at times he looked clumsy.

programme cover for Chelsea v Wolverhampton Wanderers, Saturday, 30th Aug 1958 Jimmy Greaves scored five of our goals, in a 6-2 win !  In the 5th, 38th, 55th, 62nd and 75th minutes. ::clap2::

Wolves at the time were a very good side. In fact, they won the title this 1958/59 season by six points.

Jimmy was just 18 years old. when he scored the five in this game.

Season 89/90 in div 1, top scorers lineker 24 (2 pens), Barnes 22 (5 pens) Dixon 20 (0 pens),  keeping very good company that season, Lineker one of England's greatest goal scorers and John Barnes one of the most talented players of his generation, King Kerry was up there.

And the next season 10 in 33. Again I'm not trying to taint Kerry's legacy I'm just saying he could be bloody frustrating at times.

Thought as he got older he couldn’t go shoulder of the last defender, waiting for the ball to be slipped behind because he lost a yard.

He did a lot of things well- clean pair of feet, good with one on ones with the keeper, pretty strong in the air, surprisingly good crosser of the ball.

What he couldn’t dribble past a man- and his work rate could be pretty piss poor.

Agree that Durie was more naturally talented.

He lost three yards of pace as a consequence of his stomach muscles getting torn. Not due to age, he was only mid twenties then.

I noticed towards the end of his career with us a few times when 1 on 1 with the keeper he chose the wrong option.

Thought he was good on build up play, knock down headers for other players to run onto, reasonable inter-play and like @Ewell CFC said a half decent crosser if he was forced wide.

Edit: Maybe a smidge unkind earlier re workrate and lack of dribbling skills.

Centre forwards back then when the opposition had the ball, generally stood hands on hips on the half way line.

Lineker and Shearer couldn’t beat a man either but knew where the net was

When your game is about pace which Kerry had losing three yards makes you Gerry Murphy !

Not sure about Gary Locke I thought he was a decent player. I was sitting in gate 13 in 83-84 and he scored a blinder I had a great view could hear his celebration trouble was he was playing for Palace !

Quote from the Chelsea Independent. Also a worst ever Chelsea team from 89.

The author recalls Joey Jones making the games only positive run. “A thirty yard dash to flatten Gordon Davies”. The author continues to state that “Mickey Droy failed to kick the ball at least twice yet achieved unfailing accuracy when it came to kicking Fulham”.

Les Fridge. Conceded 5 to an average Watford side.
Dennis Rolfe. Does anyone remember this man?
Doug Rougvie. Physically incapable of kicking a ball in a straight line.
Keith Dublin. He was just really sh*t.
Graham Wilkins. Sheer nepotism couldn’t keep him in the side for ever.
Lee Frost. Midfielder-cum-winger-cum-cretin.
Dale Jasper. Gave away two penalties in a semi-final and was never heard off again.
Alan Mayes. Physically refused to score. Could have been Kevin Wilson’s dad.
Tommy Langley. Pointless runs and permanently offside.
Teddy Maybank. Scored against Carlisle and then compared himself to Puskas, Pele and Di Stefano.
Darren Wood. I still can’t see what the hell he is meant to be doing?

Subs: Perry Digweed, Trevor Aylott, Mike Nutton and Phil Driver

To be fair to big Doug, It was the opposing forwards he was brought to kick in a straight line, not the ball...:Connie_threaten:
