Posted February 11, 20205 yr Really enjoyed watching and listening to this, and I recommend it to anyone who has a spare 45 minutes. 0:20 - 2:50 = Hasselbaink discussing how his move to Chelsea came about in 2000. 2:55 - 5:35 = Gudjohnsen discussing how his move to Chelsea came about in 2000. 5:35 - 6:20 = Gudjohnsen discussing how he broke his leg in Holland and doctors telling him that he wouldn't be playing at the highest level again, and how he fought back from that. 6:25 - 8:55 = Both players discussing the sacking of Gianluca Vialli, and the arrival of Claudio Ranieri and what went through their minds when the managerial change occurred. 9:00 - 13:40 = The start of the iconic strike partnership between the two players and why it was successful. They also mention how the partnership froze Zola out of the first team to a certain extent. 13:40 - 15:35 = Chelsea securing a top 4 spot and the all important final match against Liverpool. Gudjohnsen mentions the pre match team meeting in the dressing room with the then Chief Executive Trevor Birch who emphasized the significance of the Liverpool match and the ramifications of winning or losing. 15:40 - 22:40 = The takeover of the club by Roman Abramovich and what they remember of it. They describe the "uncertainty and pressure" that came with that time period. Once Mutu and Crespo signed with the club, they were told by Ranieri that they were on the outer with the club in favour of these new signings. 22:40 - 23:35 = The speculation over Ranieri's future over the course of the 2003/2004 season. Gudjohnsen believes that his job would have only been safe had he won the league that season. The Champions League tie against AS Monaco sealed his fate. 23:35 - 25:00 = The arrival of Jose Mourinho in 2004 and Hasselbaink leaving the club. Hasselbaink said he never met Mourinho and was informed by Peter Kenyon that he was being released from the club (despite having a year left on his contract) but says Mourinho told him years later that he should have kept him on at the club. 25:00 - 29:40 = Gudjohnsen discussing the arrival of Mourinho and his first impressions of him. He discusses how Mourinho called him when he was in Iceland having a beer with a friend and confirming he wanted him to play an active role in the 2004/2005 season. He said he never received any assurances like that from a manager. In the first team meeting with Mourinho, he said the players looked at each other and instantly believed they would win the league with him in charge. 29:40 - 30:50 = Gudjohnsen was asked why Mourinho starts well at any stint with a club, but after three or four years it declines. He said Mourinho is "very demanding of his players" and players can get tired of it after a while but the impact when he joins a new club is instantaneous. 30:50 - 33:35 = Gudjohnsen discusses how and why he departed Chelsea. His changing positional role in 2005/2006, the return of Crespo along with an improving Drogba meant his days were numbered. Gudjohnsen knew he was likely leaving throughout the 2005/2006 season. Gudjohnsen went to see Mourinho in his office and both men mutually agreed that his Chelsea career was over. 33:35 - 35:25 = Gudjohnsen's move to Barcelona and his three years with them. 35:25 - 37:50 = Hasselbaink's nearly moving to Barcelona in January 2003 until the deal fell through. 37:50 - 38:40 = Gudjohnsen playing under both Mourinho and Guardiola. Gudjohnsen had a stronger relationship with Mourinho, but didn't have a bad relationship with Guardiola. 42:00 - 46:40 = Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen looking back on their time with Chelsea. Both loved their time with us.
February 11, 20205 yr Thanks for the tip Jezz. Interesting from your synopsis that Jose thought he should have kept Jimmy. It would have been interesting to see how that would have gone. Jimmy wasn't exactly known for his workrate without the ball!
February 11, 20205 yr Interesting comments about Ranieri. Certainly wasn't the great man manager that was assumed going by the way he spoke to both after the Roman takeover.
February 11, 20205 yr I enjoyed that and things that caught my attention from the podcast. Eidur - Vialli calling him with his sexy Italian voice to get him to move. Zola unhappy on the bench and as players they knew how that felt so would make an effort to reach out to him. Instinctive play with jimmy Liverpool match end of season - CEO Trevor Birch - do or die, win or draw or the club will need to sell half the players. Abramovich comes in throwing money around with the feeling he is trying to buy the league and also with him being around the team yet not saying much -felt like added pressure. Ranieri - speaks to them and say he would help to find them a good club as they had just signed Crespo and Mutu. Hasselbaink was the club's top scorer that season. Crespo poor season, Mutu started well yet a selfish player and then had problems off the field. Haselbaink never met Jose just Kenyon when it was time to leave. Jose phones Eidur, 'I need you next season and need you at your best' , Eidur puts down his holiday beer straight away. Eidur in his last season played as both m/f and reserve striker, talks with Mourinho, 'am I striker or m/f?' Jose, 'You are whatever I need you to be.' Ediur sees both Essien and Thiago - and senses he is back to Ranieri days and fighting for his position again yet now against two natural midfielders and he is a converted striker.......... Barca come in for him and advise he will need to fight for his position yet it was Barca and a chance to test yourself against the best. Hasselbaink had been approached by Barca under Ranieri, yet Barca lose to Valencia and Van Gaal is sacked, move off! Eidur they don't listen to press conferences yet players want managerial recognition for good play. Eidur, 'I absolutely loved playing for Chelsea'. Hasselbaink loves passing the Chelsea wall with his daughter and seeing his picture on it.
February 11, 20205 yr Its a shame they never mentioned Eidur going to Spurs, purely because I imagine Jimmy would have had a few choice words for that one.

February 11, 20205 yr I posted the link to the article in the following our ex’s thread, didn’t realise it was taken from a podcast. I’ll have to listen to it.
March 16, 20205 yr I just watched this interview/video - the title is a bit misleading - this was more about their time at Chelsea & for Eidur more about his career - excellent watch during this dead time

Against Dirt Leeds too with a Lampard assist, and Guddy was always one of my favourite players. I think Drogba's brace against Bayern, Zolas goal against Norwich, Robbie's goal against Boro in the 97 FA Cup final, and then this are some of my faves
