September 11, 20205 yr Love it or hate it, it’s back with some changes. Good summary here. https://www.espn.com.au/football/english-premier-league/story/4176070/var-is-back-in-the-premier-league!-how-its-changed-for-2020-21
September 27, 20205 yr Not always a fan of Roy Hodgson but what he came out with after the game on MOTD, word for word spot-on. Our game is being ruined and all it needs is a bit of COMMON SENSE. No-one knows what is going on with decisions these days. Just get someone who actually understands football to put things right and say THIS is how we are doing it from now on and put an end to all this nonsense.
September 27, 20205 yr Agree, Nibs. Hodgson was spot-on about the handball rule. I just can't trust the present bunch of refs and their masters. Their inability to apply the new technology with any intelligence or feeling for the game shows them up as incompetent.
September 27, 20205 yr Common sense yeah please, the old handball rule of years gone by "hand to ball" is nice and clear.
September 27, 20205 yr I take it all back. As long as it means Spurs drop points, it HAS to stay!! Joking of course, you know we will be on the wrong end of one of these ridiculous decisions. It's a joke and someone has to take responsibility and act NOW.

Agreed, but this will mean the season being played under two sets of rules. I think another * will be needed. Edited September 27, 20205 yr by Backbiter
September 27, 20205 yr I've seen a worse call where the hand didn't move and as in a natural position, I think the CL rules 2 seasons ago were horrific and the PL has headed more in that direction...
September 27, 20205 yr Just when you think VAR may be improving with the refs actually using the pitch side monitor then this bull crap raises its ugly confusing head. FFS I despise Spuds but that was a farcical call by VAR supporting the obviously not well thought out handball rule revision Just a thought now we do have VAR why not put the handball rule back to the way it was, ie let the ref make a call accidental ball to arm/ hand or penalty arm / hand to ball , probably too simple a solution for the mugs in charge. September 27, 20205 yr Way too many penalties. The handball needs to be addressed, but now season is underway I'm sure they'll claim due to impact on other results it can not be changed yet. The City game is laughable too. Yes there is contact, but the way players go down from an arm/hand on the shoulder is embarrassing. Maddison looked like he hit a land mine, not Mendy's hand on shoulder. Common sense is needed, but not much chance of that with the FA.
September 28, 20205 yr Informative Twitter thread about the application of the new 'defensive handball' rule:

I can understand why they'd want to remove any degree of judgement from handball penalty calls. In an ideal world we'd have fully competent referees with the ability to use their common sense to make a fair and reasonable call in each situation, but that's like asking for the moon on a stick.
