Oh and deep fried mars bars are actually much nicer than they sound - not nearly as sickly as I thought they'd be but the one in another local pub was nicer than the one I had at Glastonbury.

I've never had a deep fried Mars bar 🤔 I would probably prefer a deep fried Snickers bar, come to think of it.

Was funny during the Euro's opposition fans taking the piss out of English food as if it's some sort of national embarrassment and something we care about. The Italians had a banner with you put pineapple on pizza and after we beat Denmark the guy who played Hannibal tweeted just lost to the beans on toast lot.😆

I was amazed when I discovered that people thought beans on toast was unusual.

One thing every house had growing up was stale bread and beans were cheap so it made economic sense. It's funny Italian food is some of the best in the world not that I'm an expert but in the 70's and 80's nearly every greasy spoon in London was run by Italians I think they stayed after the war. Must of been weird for them going from  fresh pasta, olive oil etc to black pudding and HP sauce.

And look how well you turned out!

:laugh2: different times back then,... covered in dirt, cuts, bruises, always hungry and thirsty, and never at home, these are things most kids today never encounter.

Does that mean you think beans on toast is weird?

Yes. I think it's a staple diet only in the UK.

Mind you, when I eat a full English breakfast I shovel beans on my toast with the scrambled eggs. But as a main meal, no.

I had beans on toast yesterday…

Living the (unemployed) dream...

I was never a fan of beans on toast on its own, but cheese and beans on toast was a staple meal as a teenager when both parents were working evening shifts.

I had a spam fritter a few years ago really horrible tasteless and greasy how we ate that crap back in the day. 😆 Crisps I liked as a kid I find repugnant now Frazzles are one but the worst in my opinion are Quavers which taste like cardboard that someone has rubbed their feet on.

You've reached the summit of sophistication!

Don’t understand the snobbery around food (each to their own and all that). Also how foreigners look down on food in this country…must be going to the wrong places because with immigration, you have pretty much all you can ask for…(especially in major cities). admittedly standards of pizza, Chinese and Thai food can vary a lot more here but just find a restaurant that has a lot of good reviews…if you go to big standard chains, of course it’s going to be a bit meh.

l’ve eaten all kinds of cuisine from your expensive fine dining to your basic stuff. Sometimes a good baked beans on toast with cheese on top or a fry up is just the ticket. Yum, yum.

i remember going to london with my school when i was like 16 and we walked through this neighbourhood where there were like 15 indian restaurants in the same street and they all tried to lure us in haha. And they had these closed water bottles on the tables and served really hot food and then delayed the drinks and when the bottles were opened they charged for the bottles haha

Water is no good for spice - you need something fatty (so a raita for example in an Indian restaurant made with yoghurt etc) as it coats the mouth!
