Chelsea vs. Portsmouth

No sign of the 'week 4' thread, but feel free to create it and over-take this as the main thread... Just sick of talking about the Liverpool game icon_rolleyes.gif

Teams? Thoughts? Predictions?

Portsmouth will be no easy task, luckily we're at home, so hopefully that will prove the deciding factor. I can't see Mourinho swapping it about too much, maybe Pizarro upfront or Joe Cole getting a run out in place of Kalou and Malouda respectively.

Regardless of what we do in this game, don?t bet on the match analysis/reports afterwards to focus on what happens on the pitch, but more continue to harp on about ?after last weeks antics?? etc? I hope I?m wrong, I remember when I thought the Ashley Cole/Tap Up thing would forever go on, but it stopped? Keep the blue flag flying high!

yes, let's move the f*ck away from the liverpool gam. 1 good point, a decision going our way. so what?

okay... I think they've improved quite a lot. the mid table in the league is no longer a buch of simple 3 pointers.

can't see joe cole getting a start yet, unless for rotation's sake- malouda and swp still have it on form, swp especially, but I can't see malouda losing his place either.

excellent news for our players shins- one of the worst to ever play in serie a

I agree with everything you said g4 and hopefully we'll see some crosses for drogba/pizzaro or kalou- whoever it is.

would love to see Sheva/Cole/SWP/Malouda/Maka and another striker preferably pizarro on the pitch at the same time- i know it's a dream.. but just once.. for ten minutes... maka and joe cole in the middle... come on jm... go on.. you know you want to... it would be an annihilation.

Who was their African player that scored one of the goals against Bolton that everyone seemed impressed with, really quick?

I don't think Portsmouth are going to be a push over somehow. Harry Rednapp is a canny old dog.

Don't want to lose our record at home to Portsmouth of all teams! I think the days of being able to thrash mid table teams at home without breaking too much of a sweat are long gone - you have to work at it a lot harder now.

I don't think Jose will change much either - would like to see Joe get a run out.

As for our defence who will be playing this week out of Alex, Glen, Paulo, JT, Cole, Ben Haim, Essien! 128.gif

I would like to see Joe start in place of one or other of Malouda or SWP. This isn't me saying that either of them deserves to be dropped as they have both been in good form (and especially SWP) however we have a squad for a reason and it makes little sense to keep Joe on the bench for an extended period and then suddenly ask him to step in when he is well short of match fitness. It isn't as if there is any doubt that Joe will deliver!

and when we are picking our defence please let us have a right back at right back instead of Essien.

Loz,

Personally I'd love to see a left side as they used to employ at Arsenal, with Pires cutting inside and Ashley Cole overlapping wide around the back (Cole/Cole for us) but I think, based on JM's current team selection: SWP/Malouda & Drogba/Kalou, that his focus is firmly on using the width that selection gives and therefore Cole is well likely to be preferred out wide. I'd love to see Cole play with Shevchenko- i really think if their is any hope for sheva it lies principally in Joe being able to play with him.

Hey I like the idea of Maka or even Mikel at right back for a game. Mikel has the height, although hasn't looked good in the air so far.

We need to get the defence sorted out and score a few more goals. Maybe Joey could come in for Malouda, although he has scored a couple of goals. Sheva seems to ready to play so he can do the second half maybe.

Still struggling to fit Lamps, Mikel and Essien into the one mid field, assuming essien fit he could get the nod.

You like the idea of Maka or Mikel at right back???? Has full back become a position in football that is actually a doddle to play and anyone can do it as long as they can trap a ball and play a pass?

Maka and Mikel, as far as I know, have never played right back in their entire career - this is top flight football we are talking about - saying that you like the idea of playing Maka or Mikel at right back is no different from saying why not give Mikel a game at centre forward and Maka a shot on the left wing.

yes Essien and Diarra have both played at right back but:

a) do you think Jose made that decision without trying them out in training and;

B) have they actually always looked comfortable as right backs?

Full back is as specialist a role as any and whenever you try and force players into playing it when they are not accustomed to it you are creating a liability. We have two right backs in the squad, they should fill the role and never mind this nonsense of trying to accommodate players by playing people out of position.

gggggggggroan if we're going to play like that we might as well play with SWP/Malouda further forward like Barca- though SWP/Malouda/Cole/Drogba is slightly less inspiring that Messi/Ronaldinho/Deco/Eto'o

Well I can see that it sounds a bit unusual and every position on the pitch is specialist and hard to adjust to.

Having said that I was the only one on this forum that had Essien at RB for the LPuddle match and there are plenty of examples of players switching positions to great effect.

Lauren Blanc switched from striker to sweeper and was brilliant at it just for instance.

Also I want to make use of all these midfield players that should be getting a run but aren't.

Maka hasn't been on the park yet and when Ballack comes back there will be no room for Mikel if Essien is in the midfield and we keep playing two strikers and two wide midfielders.

Maka would make a good defensive full back in my opinion, he's fast, tackles well, reads the game brilliantly and uses the ball very intelligently. Ok so he can't cross or head the ball but we've all got limitations. Mikel is also an excellent defensive player and the obvious holding midfielder in time, much better distributor of the ball than Essien, although he doesn't run with it as well. To me Essien is a classic running midfielder whereas Maka/Mikel are passing midfielders.

As for training Manchester City don't seem to need it

Do I think Maka would make a better defensive fullback than Paulo or GJ, actually I do. Will Chelsea use him there? No of course they won't.

Anyhow roll on the weekend

Bold quotes are revelations for me..... icon_eek.gif

If Maka can`t cross and head he can`t be defensive full-back, in this case the position behind striker is more comfortable for him.
