no.

if we but a right back that should be richards. that 25m would be enough to buy him too...

Yeah his performance was one of the few bright sparks at Wembley tonight. I'd love it, but can't see it happening somehow.

I voted, 'Yes and sell GJ'.

However I'd be just as happy with Richards.

Or actually, why not buy both and sell PF and GJ? Now there's an idea...clean out the deadwood, RA.

I am really surprised at the reticence expressed by so many of us to Alves. The guy is a classy exciting right-back, the best in the world at going forward. Very much like Thuram, he would bring an awful lot to our side. His defending maybe be under question however If anyone in the world can teach him defensive discipline it's Jose. Much worse that he should be a great defender and it would be up to Jose to teach him how to attack. Any-old-how, the thought of him bombing on down the wing will certainly give our opponents much to think about. A winger will think twice before trying to take him because of what may happen should they lose the ball, his attacking is lethal. Incidentally, he defended extremely well against Barca and Real last year. Oh and he take a wicked free kick. Bring him on.

Blimey, once again I find myself agreeing utterly with Brian (it's a shame that he has clearly decided to ignore me completely as we agree on many points football-wise). Spot on Brian -- you see, I'm not so bad, am I?

I would like, alternatively, to see JM put his confidence in one of our right backs for a run of games starting this week against porstmouth. I don't know what it was, but something happened with Ferreira last season- he was inconceivably dropped for no reason and found Geremi and Diarra preferred to him.

The only explanations i can give are: When Carvalho complained for his appearances with gallas/jt/riccy at the club, JM called him an idiot said he needed his IQ tested and then he put him into the 11. I can't recall if Diarra was making noise about matches or just playing well when he was put into that position- in any case i think there had to be something wrong with the paulo-jm relationship for RB to be considered anyhow.

Or something personal or professional happened at training or something similar...

After seeing him play this season I would really like to see Micah Richards in our team but given the circumstances it's probably not possible.

That said and with Robben off to Madrid I would really like to see Alves join our ranks.

I think that right-back is only a "problem area" because Jose has rotated so many players through it, dropping people for no real reason other than for rotation's sake.

We already have one of the best defensive right-backs in the world in Ferreira, and one of the best attacking right-backs in Johnson.

With Diarra, Ben-Haim and Essien capable of filling in if needed, I really don't see the need to spend a king's ransom on Alves, who may or may not improve things.

27 million for a right-back? It would make him the second most expensive signing in our history. Is he really that good? Is he really going to improve the team THAT much?

I haven't seen a lot of Sevilla play - but from what I have seen, he is very good going forward when given a completely free licence to do so (note - JM will not give him the same free range he has at Sevilla).

Has anyone seen enough of his defending to rate him on that? Because surely that is a right-back's first and foremost responsibiliy.

Yes.

Not at any price, but yes. If we have to lose GJ then so be it.

He'd make a massive difference to us. We've got the best target striker in the world, but last season the quality of the balls we put into him was poor. For all his ability as a defender Paulo just wasn't up to delivering quality crosses. GJ, Diarra and Cashley can all delivery a cross but none of them are consistent. The one fullback we have that consistently delivers quality crosses is Bridge. Play him every game on the left and Alves on the right and get them sending in the crosses and Drogba will score twice the goals he did last season.

I am one of the many who believe Alves should play when we play 4-4-2 and Paulo for the 4-3-3.
