So here's the big question? Yet again Cech failed to save a penalty?! Has he ever saved one for us? Is it time to give Carlo a run in the team?!

Lots of questions, hopefully lots of diverse answers!

Of course he will. But I think there are bigger issues to ponder here than this IMO.

A great shot stopper and a world class keeper in open play he may be. But he is PANTS at stopping penalties. Seriously. Carlo is ten times the penalty stopper Cech is. But then again, Loz in goal would have a better chance of stopping a penalty than Cech. icon_rolleyes.gif

Should we add him to the list of get rids icon_lol.gif

I voted the bottom one.

As have I.

Bridge gave away a penalty yesterday, add him to the list.

Lots of interesting debate...

I agree that Cech on form is probably the best keeper in the world (apart from at saving penalties!).

But for a full-time professional, who hopefully knows his weaknesses, he should spend a lot more time practicing anticipating penalties. He always seems to go the wrong way!

As a team that rarely wins 4/5 - nil, due to our style of play, we are often going to be in situations where penalties are needed to settle a cup game. But everytime these come up, I am never confident in Petr. I am always hoping for the manager to substitute Carlo on.

Lets get tactical substitutions going...

Jesus, what a pointless thread, if it wasnt for Pete yesterday we wouldve been hammered.

As someone has said , there are far more important issues than having a pop at the best keeper in the world because he didnt save a penalty

Much as it pains me to say, Cech IS a better goalie than Carlo. He's made some uncharacteristic mistakes recently, but on the whole I trust him to be reliable. But those penalties...... OMG

This is not the big question, although it might qualify as the most stupid question. Cech is our number one keeper and should remain so. Carlo is nowhere near him in any aspect of his game.

Cech is absolutely awful at penalties. No question about it. Just look at him against Spuds. It looked as if he didn't even try.

Still, let's make this simple.

Do we want a keeper who saves lots of penalties but let's in a soft goal every other game or do we want a keeper who almost never lets in a soft goal but also almost never saves any penalties?

Cech is a world class keeper. I'd rank him 2nd best in the world behind Buffon.

In my oppinion Cech can only get better at saving penalties. He will get more and more experience which surely will help him get better and considering the fact that we've hired lots of people to help other people get better at things surely we could hire someone who can teach Cech how to become better at saving penalties? 317.gif

I said yesterday just prior to Joe coming on, that we should bring on Carlo in case it goes to pens, was he even on the bench yesterday? I guess it matters not now. icon_rolleyes.gif

Anyway, "leave the big man alone", penalties are few and far between to worry about him doing bad at them.

When Berbatov stepped up I just knew he'd score, Cech just doesnt seem able to save penalties; with the one at Ewood being the exception (sadly it seems) to the rule.

Yes, Carlo was on the bench. He even warmed up when Cech got a knock.

I agree that penalties are few, but the fact remains that some big games end up in a penalty shoot-out and when that happens we really want a keeper who we know can save atleast one shot.

As it is now we have to rely on the opponents missing the goal and let's be honest that doesn't happen too often.

It's an insane idea to drop a keeper because he has a bad record saving penalties. There is so much luck involved it's untrue.

Should we pick a player who has no commitment, flayer, ability or passion beacause he can take a decent free kick?

Saving penalty kicks is all about experience and luck. Great goalkeepers almost always intimidate the player that shoots. Give Cech some time. He proved many, many, many times that he is worth the chance to be a Stamford Bridge heroe.

I'd like to vote for both "no" and "leave the big man alone...", but the question is about penalties, so no he won't save one anytime soon, and no, when it comes to penalties he is not the best one in the world.

Some training might help!!!!!! 317.gif

I think some people are getting a wee bit confused as to the discussion that I raised.

I am simply talking about Cech in relation to penalties, nothing else. I also agree that he is our No1 & probably the best keeper in the world, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have any faults. Like any other professional if it is clear that you have faults surely you work hard in training to erridicate these faults. Especially when we have lost too many penalty shoot outs in recent years.

Sorry for the confusion.

To be fair Mooch, I, and I'm sure many others, didn't think you were going on an OTT 'bin Chec he's rubbish' rant, and were merely pointing out, quite rightly, that his penalty record is very poor.

Granted there is a lot of luck when pens are concerned, but I don't think anyone can deny that some keepers seem to have a knack of guessing right more often than not and that it can play a huge role, especially in the knockout competitions. As much as I hate Reina, I would dread taking a pen against him much more than Petr, as he consistently gets it right.

While some of it may just be instinct, I would certainly hope Petr is putting in his homwork on the oppositions main pen takers ahead of each game, as this clearly does give you a slight edge.
