Reports he could be out for 4 to 6 weeks depending on ankle scan - with Belletti paying against Spurs, Ballack and Mikel sidelined and Maka/SWP/Sidwell gone we are looking a bit thin of options again, thus Kenyon not securing Robinho for an adaptable 4-3-3 when injuries mean we only have 3 midfielders is going to eat at Scholari's mind as it did when he never backed Jose when we needed players toward the end of his reign.

Mikel is supposed to be almost back to fitness so assuming that is true and he can maintain that fitness I don't think losing Essien for a few weeks is a massive loss - to be honest I thin he has been pretty awful so far this season and I can only imagine that is a match fitness issue. Of course the downside is that he will be even less match fit after a further period of absence.

Also if we are genuinely worried about having too few players to cover central roles then there is the option of bringing in Appiah on a free transfer. When everyone is available he wouldn't be a first team player but he would provide decent cover on a short term basis.

Another injury? Damn, are we the new Newcastle or something?...

Appiah's available? Awesome! I didn't know he was still knocking around...

Hugely injury prone and his form tends to oscillate wildly however on a free transfer he is worth considering. DOesn't solve our lack of width problem though and when everyone is fit, Lampard, Ballack, Mikel, Essien and Deco would all be ahead of him in the peckimg order.

I think that our squad is deep enough to get through this. We were always worried that we had too many central midfielders, but now I am glad we have as many as we do. If he is out for 6 weeks, but Ballack is out for only two, and we have a great few others to chose from in the meantime, I think we will be ok

Premier League - Prem trio eye Appiah

Eurosport - Sun, 07 Sep 11:07:00 2008

West Ham, Portsmouth and Arsenal are all reported to be considering a free transfer swoop for in-demand Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah.

The midfielder is a free agent following his departure from Fenerbahce last month so can still sign for a club outside the transfer window.

He has had injury problems in the past but proved his fitness as he played for Ghana against Libya on Friday night.

Ghana lost the match 1-0 but Appiah produced an excellent performance to impress the onlookers.

Representatives from the Hammers, Pompey and the Gunners were all watching on, while another top European side are also thought to be interested.

Appiah, 27, who previously played for Juventus, recently admitted that it would be 'his dream' to play in the Premier League.

Sure, we've lost a few central midfielders, but I don't think it has hit the crisis stage yet where we have to start signing uncontracted players.

Mikel's going to be back for the City match by all accounts, and Ballack's on the mend as well, so don't think it has reached crisis point yet.

Against City, I would be surprised if we didn't see a diamond midfield of:

................Mikel................

Lampard................Deco

...............J Cole.............

With Kalou and Anelka (or possibly Drogba) up front.

I would have Beletti (who did pretty well against Spurs) as backup on the bench, along with Michael Woods, who I would love to see get a run in the second half if we are a few goals up.

In my opinion, we should think a bit more positively and look on these times when we are missing a few first team players as good opportunites for (1) blooding youngsters (2) giving squad players like Beletti and Kalou a chance at a run in the first team - rather than panicing and signing a West Ham/Portsmouth standard player like Appiah.

Ess faces six-month KO

MICHAEL ESSIEN could be ruled out for SIX MONTHS with a cruciate ligament injury.

SunSport has learnt the Chelsea midfielder, who was injured playing for Ghana against Libya on Friday, may have to go under the knife.

A Blues insider revealed: “After undergoing an examination, Michael’s injury seems to be a lot worse than previously thought. He may have to have an operation.â€

The player’s agent Fabien Piveteau said: “Unfortunately it’s not good news.

“I am afraid it’s a big problem. A big problem.

“He’s taken a bad blow to the knee. I don’t know exact details but I think it’s not good.

“I don’t know what will happen. It’s now two or three times that he has taken blows to his knee.â€

Essien, 25, missed Chelsea’s opener against Portsmouth due to injury but came back to face Wigan and Spurs.

A couple of days ago he appeared upbeat about his current problem, saying he would be out for a few weeks.

Now it seems the damage is far more serious — and that is a massive blow for Blues boss Big Phil Scolari.

From The Scum,so theres a pinch of salt but its worrying...
