www.chelseafc.com In the summer of 1995 the directors at Chelsea took the decision to try to attract top-quality players with experience of winning. Signing Mark Hughes, was for me anyway, a massive statement of intent. He certainly fitted the bill, having won Two league titles, Three FA Cups and a European Cup Winners Cup at his previous club. Although he was never a prolific goalscorer, Hughes' powerful hold-up play helped performances improve through his first season. However, it was not until the arrival of Gianfranco Zola that Chelsea fans saw the best of the Welshman. The pair formed an almost-perfect partnership and were instrumental in us winning the FA Cup in 1997. Hughes, in particular, was outstanding in the fourth round victory over Liverpool, his all-round power turning the game after coming on as substitute with us trailing 2-0. No one loved an acrobatic volley more than Mark Hughes The following year 'Sparky' added to his considerable trophy cabinet by winning the League Cup and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Although not a regular in the line-up for European games, it was his spectacular volley that won the semi-final against Vicenza with time running out. His Chelsea career ended with a tally of 39 goals from 123 games as well as those three winners' medals.

Random Rumours
Is Essugo really so bad that he can't get any minutes in midfield ahead of Gusto and James? If so, why the hell did we sign him?
-
Xabi Alonso - New Chelsea Manager
I'm not sure having 30% possesion is a good idea but what has really worked in the last two games was that we scored from our 1st chance. Football is so much easier if you score first and early.

Robert Sanchez joins Chelsea
Soooooo, surely now that Sanchez is going Ben Roberts doesn't want to stay around anymore? Right? Can we loan him to Como as well?

Just noticed that Deivid Washington to Strasbourg still isn't confirmed LOL.

Which players do we Sell or Loan for the 26/27 Season?
7M for Tosin summarises what a complete waste of time and money that signing was. We paid him more than that in wages for two seasons ...

Which players do we Sell or Loan for the 26/27 Season?
Tosin as good as confirmed for 7M exit Guiu as good as confirmed for 14M exit Misha season long loan confirmed Fernandez will happen, it has to. Slonina, who cares at this stage. Paez is such wasted potential, seen him linked with a loan to the great unwashed, which will do nothing for his career. I’d be more tempted to keep him at the club and pair him with Hendo or someone to straighten him out as there’s definitely a player there. Essugo seems to want Hull (or the PL to be more specific) BlueCo seem to want Strasbourg, I’d guess this is a late move dependant on how the Enzo domino and replacements fall for us. Neto, if he goes he goes, if he stays he stays. He’s an OK squad player but isn’t a wing back ever.

Marc Guiu
14M to Leipzig. Is this one of those scenarios where it’s a win for all involved parties? Just waited 2 years of the poor lads career in the process.

Which players do we Sell or Loan for the 26/27 Season?
Expecting to see some movement today on all the following exits : Fernandez Adarabioyo Mudryk (loan) Guiu Essugo (loan) Slonina Paez (loan) Liverpool seem to be after a winger so maybe we also see them make a late move for Neto ? And hopefully we get a midfielder or two coming in, and maybe a centre back.

Thanks, picked a game at random and got this: Chelsea vs. Nottingham Forest Match Report – Saturday September 2, 2023 | FBref.com Pretty much the complete opposite of the Brighton game, 76% possession and a 0-1 loss. Of course, there will always be so many factors going into a game of football, pointing to a simple stat like possession to explain results are close to useless. However, I'm extremely glad we seem to have a manager now that doesn't have a problem ceding possession if that gives us a better chance of winning the game.

You seem surprised. Keep up.

Which players do we Sell or Loan for the 26/27 Season?
Third choice behind J.P. and D.W. Essentially the Guiu role.

Some people love to hunt for every cloud for any silver lining, we have a new attacking player who has scored 1 goal and has 1 assist in his first 2 games and has played superbly, jumping on him for a defensive lapse halfway up the pitch is pretty desperate stuff.

That's fair i think. Just not sure what Emegha will offer as second/third choice

Random Rumours
I’m a bit split on making signings today. It’s clear we are in serious need of improving our midfield. We’re close to not even having one with Moi injured and Lavia inevitably being injured soon. The start we’ve had has I think made many of us think a title challenge is coming and that addressing these issues now is imperative. But if you consider finishing 10th and being terrible last year, 5th and CL football would be brilliant progress. And CL next year and extra cash could (and with time to assess) could result in much better signings next summer and then a title challenge. Not good at practising patience though. Get the chequebook out!!

No. In a word. Never has had and never will have the physicality for the PL. Belongs in the Championship.

About time we beat these muppets. Hopefully Alonso has a plan and can tighten us up at the back.

Xabi Alonso - New Chelsea Manager
All the data is readily available on FBREF. Not going to be very conclusive though, as it all depends on the style of play for a particular manager. In the Maresca season and a half, we were a possession side, so all the wins (and all the defeats) are pretty much going to show us as having more possession than the opponent, unless we are playing Arsenal, Man City, PSG, Bayern etc etc.

Mykhailo Mudryk signs for Chelsea
Now that would be something. A 36 goal season and his club is relegated on zero points LOL
-
Xabi Alonso - New Chelsea Manager
I first started paying attention to possession numbers under Pochettino - I think something like the first 10 matches I looked at we won the game if we had less possession than our opponent, and drew/lost if we had the most. I would love to see a complete statistic on whether or not this applicable over several seasons
