sergeyMS
We have passed to quarters as well as Liverpool, Bayern and Villareal and now I'd like to see some italian teams to qualify too. Before 1st leg I put my trust in Inter, it has still remained just after that one. But it looks pretty much hopeless now. Not only Samuel hasn't recovered, but Inter will also be without Chivu, Materazzi and Burdisso. It means boy Motta should make a pair with Cordoba in defence, and it's difficult to find a team which will be proud of this pair, or JM could try to shift Cambiasso into the defence, what isn't a great option either in my opinion for certain reasons. So lets hail JM on a very hard mission... Edited March 11, 2009 by sergeyMS
The Brit
I had a few jobs to do at kick off and had radio five on for first 15 minutes...of course utd scored, but that couldn't excuse the ridiculous biased commentary by alan green and chris waddle, who were talking like the tie was dead and buried...i was thinking how could they be so naive being so-called pros...don';t they know that one inter goal and they're through...so anyway I have finally switched it on and Inter have created three or four great chances in 20 mins and hit the bar...they should be level...once again people are buying too much into the utd hype and not actually watching the games...they're obviously good, but not that good
loz
Meanwhile Barcelona are tanking Lyon and Messi has scored another stunning goal.
Virosh
Half time and I've got to say Inter are doomed. They have had three 100% goal-scoring chances and have consistently blown each of them with a remarkable lack of quality. Other than that, a fairly boring game to watch. bjd
2-0 now (Ronaldo) and match seemingly over. I thought Inter were doing ok, but youve got to take your chances if you get them an Old Trafford and they havent.
loz
Platini must be spitting blood - only Arsenal look like they might give him a little joy by failing to qualify for the quarter final. Watching the two games between Inter and Man Utd probably gives you all you need to know to guess that Jose will be back in England (or Spain) sooner rather then later. If High Street Ken pops in maybe he would so kind as to ask Brian M why Ibrahimovc has once again looked like totally out of hsi depth against a decent defence. icecoolguy22
Zaltan's miss in the first half really cost Inter there, that's kind of miss you expect from a clown like Bendtner. Maybe, just maybe Imbromvic is not that great of a player :D
The Brit
So utd through and once again weren't very convincing...inter hit the woodwork twice and spurn a few other chances...obviously they only have themselves to blame cos they should have taken them...utd clearly tough to beat now cos everything is going their way
g3.7
arsenal through- roma unlucky not to get a pen in the first half, stream fairly choppy after that. both sides missing key players and in the end some comedy penalties in the shoot out see roma go out. I was thinking the exact same thing, loz. He looks very detached and foreign whenever he gives a press conference or is at the sideline. I think he is gradually coming to the realisation that maybe, just maybe he belongs to the Premiership.
just
If High Street Ken pops in maybe he would so kind as to ask Brian M why Ibrahimovc has once again looked like totally out of hsi depth against a decent defence. Possibly a tad harsh Loz. I felt Ibrahimovich played really well tonight without............. ever looking like he was going to score! There is no doubting his control, hold up play, vision and passing are top draw. But, for me, he has never looked a natural finisher. And I think we saw that again tonight. In fact, I thought Andy Gray got it spot on with his 2nd half opinion on Ibrahimovich. Can't remember it word for word but basically he said he was a good target and had some lovely touches, but he just doesn't have that determination, that killer instinct against the very best defences. As for the game itself, I felt United played much better than we did last night, but they did have their share of luck. If Inter could have got one back, (and I think their overall play deserved a goal), it might have got interesting. Incidentally, I wonder if Pauly and Barak will turn up for their yearly Serie A V EPL showdown. Surely, there can only be one winner this time? TheWestwayWonder
I wasnt watching, but was following along through text. But when Vidic put Utd ahead after five minutes, I thought it was gonna be a repeat of last night. The commentary made it sound like they were rampant in the first half, but it now seems like it was far from decided until the second goal. I thought Jose's side might just nick a goal a turn the whole thing on its ear, but it wasnt to be I guess. The only saving grace, for me, is what Loz pointed out. Anything that makes Michel Platini pissed is alright by me. I have great respect for him as a player, but as an administrator he is a total clown. I wonder if even registers with him that the Roma Ultras turned into animals again tonight, but he might end up blaming that on taunting by the Arsenal fans. Also, I heard Jose gave "one of those" pressers after the game in which he attacked the Italian media. Including -"At least everyone in Italy will be happy tonight" -"I know I won" and -"They will have to go over my dead body to touch my players" as if the "Jose back to England" stories needed any more fuel. Im hard pressed to ever think of a time when he was as vindictive with the English press. Also, on the subject of players, I wonder how good a partnership Zlatan might form with someone like Eto'o who is effective enough on his own and finishes like breathing. Anyone see his goal tonight? Not better than Messi's, but still, emphatic
The Brit
to be honest jose's comments were very similiar to when chelsea lost... except his honesty in saying utd were better and are a better team...he said that he would tell the people (inter board) why...for me that sounded like someone daring the powers that be to sack him...whenever chelsea lost he'd rant about the ref, the opposition cheating, bad luck, whatever to take attention away from his own team's failures...he basically said we're sh*t and we know we are
The Brit
just got to love sky sports news coverage of utd's win...saying it was a breeze...anyone who watched it knows that until the 75th minute there was a lot of tension at old t
blueday3
Not much to say about it, but two comments, John O'Shea what a c**t, and how does everyone feel about Giggs? I've not been following football nearly as long as he has been playing for Utd (not even sure I've been alive that long) but from what I hear he is a model professional, and tonight he turned back the clocks and played really well. sergeyMS
As for the game itself, I felt United played much better than we did last night, but they did have their share of luck. If Inter could have got one back, (and I think their overall play deserved a goal), it might have got interesting. I can agree with you Just and disagree with Brit and others who say Man. Utd weren`t convincing. They have very bright 1st half, especially first 15 min, when Inter had nothing to do with them. And, of course, in the 1st half they looked much better than Chelsea - playing very wide with excellent ball control with constant pressure, with 2 defenders always near Ibra, with intellegent mix of crosses from one flank to another and through balls..... simply amazing!!! The strange thing for me is - having all that they failed to create something decent in the final third in starting minutes. I disagree with worldwide press, which is telling the 1st goal has became a logical consequence of the United`s show on the pitch. It was just a corner. Inter could conceed it and could not. Vidic evaded Vieira`s marking and the rest was a technique matter. Deeper into 1st half Inter seemed to be awakening, creating several chances, 3 of which should become goals. I disagree with you Loz that Ibra wasn`t great. Despite a marking he had, and it was a very solid marking, he always managed to open into the freespace, to get the ball, to turn around with it and to find an opportunity for a decent pass. In other words he had to shift into midfield and had to play as a playmaker, which he managed to do great I think. I actually believed Inter could add a bit in 2nd half, but United`s 2nd killed my hopes and I`ve turned my TV off. (What a decent Rooney`s assist!) Totally I think well deserved Utd`s victory, but Inter had chances.... P.S. Another reason for turning my TV off was the fact I had to watch Roma-Arse LIVE first. That was a really boring game. In shoot-out Roma had all the chances to beat Arse, but Doni simply denied to catch balls. He has had 2 or 3 very simple balls conceeded...... Bye Italians, we`ll miss you... Though, wait, Udinese - Zenit, today in the Uero Cup..... :D Wish us GL.... Edited March 12, 2009 by sergeyMS
ethicalstrategy
No doubt Man U deserved to go through over the two legs but I thought 2-0 flattered them a bit last night. But, as Brit said, if you don't take your chances then you'll pay for it. Over the two legs Inter had maybe 5 gilt edge chances to score and took none of them. Mourinho knows that he doesn't have the players to compete at the top level in Europe. What I find amazing is that they are cruising at the top of Serie A. That really is a sad reflection on the Italian game. They have a handful of good players - Caesar, who is top class, Santon, a good prospect, Cambiasso, Zanetti and Ibrahimovic - the rest are has beens or never will be's. TheWestwayWonder
Speaking of not taking their chances, the ESPN matchday reports said Inter began to look defeated after Adriano's sweet volley struck the post. Made it sound as if that bad break sucked the life out of them, which doeesnt sound much like a Jose team. Any truth to that?
ethicalstrategy
I think when that shot hit the post it definitely felt like any chance of a storming last 30 mins disappeared. I wouldn't say they gave up, but you could see that they gradually got more and more desperate.
