The Brit
yes, the intellect, or lack of it, from our footballers is once again on show...having named giggs their pfa player of the year for playing just a few good games, they have decided that anelka warrants a place in the best xi and lamps does not...of course, the votes were taken some time ago, blah, blah, blah...but it's still baffling. anyway the team is: Edwin Van der Sar (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd), Nemanja Vidic (Man Utd), Patrice Evra (Man Utd), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Ryan Giggs (Man Utd), Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd), Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea), Fernando Torres (Liverpool). Gem
So who is meant to be playing in the middle with Gerrard then? Bare in mind he'll take no responsibility tracking back. How can you put 3 wingers in?! It does not make sense. (I guess you only get that if you watch South Park) Still, well done Anelka, he was on form earlier in the season. loz
To be honest I don't think anyone takes this seriously anyway. Other than the odd fan who likes to lord it up when one of their players wins it most people I know (irrespective of who they support) see it as a joke. Maksimov
How do you qualify as the player of the season when you've started just 12 matches?
Gem
How do you qualify as the player of the season when you've started just 12 matches? To be fair... Footballers are thick.
loz
How do you qualify as the player of the season when you've started just 12 matches? Fergie nominates you. Put it this way Giggs wins player of the season On the same night Harry Hill wins a BAFTA for entertainer of the year and Micky Quinn is awarded a quiche consumption lifetime achievment award Of the three Quinn was the most deserving. PloKoon13
Patrice Evra (Man Utd), Over Cashley? Really? Evra's not been all that this year, whereas Cashley's been on top of his game pretty much all season, and has confirmed himself, in my eyes, as the best left back in the world (that I am aware of). And surely it would make sense to include a defender from the Premiership's tightest defence?

coco
I would absolutley love it if Lampard goes on to score another 20 goals this season (hes on 19 now), scoring in the FA cup final, the CL final in Rome, and seeing Chelsea lift both trophies. Then everyone will know who the REAL player of the season is.

I'd love that, but for slightly different reasons. giggs award a joke... probably the least deserving winner in the history of the award. could comfortably name at least 20 players who deserve it more. charierre
And next years sympathy vote goes to...Paul Scholes. The Giggs award goes alongside the knighthood SAF got for cosying up alongside Alistair Campbell pointless.
Englishman
Choices like this just take away the credibility of the award. Didn't van Basten win the Ballon D'or despite being injured for most of the year?
mad_mac
Think this was a nostalgic nod and nothing more. Interesting to see our old JOhno got best RB!
loz
I have a feeling Johnson might be a target for Man Utd in the summer. neville is at the end of his career and Rafael is still too young to be a regular right back for them. I think Fergie will like the fact Johnson can also play further forward which will provide extra cover in the Utd squad.
PloKoon13
Would anyone care to post an alternative team? I'll go for: GK - Schwarzer RB - Jagielka (out of position, I know) CB - Vidic/Ferdinand CB - Hangeland LB - Cashley RM - Arshavin, I guess... CM - Lampard CM - Gerrard (sadly) LM - Malbranque CF - Torres CF - Rooney (for the sake of having another Man Ure player in there... )
