andy
I agree. There's almost more people greeting a new player than there is when they play games :o I watched a little bit, it is a phenomenon If they charged grand a ticket then it would cover the transfer fee :D
Maksimov
I see they've given him the #9 shirt. Wasn't that Nistelrooy's number?
The Brit
it's moments like that where you realise that while we are a big club in terms of ability, we are nowhere near the likes of madrid in terms of size...that is not to say I love Chelsea any less or that I want us to be madrid, but we sometimes struggle to get even our games sold out...to see 80,000 fans turn up just to see someone unveiled is amazing
Maksimov
They don't actually sell tickets to these unveilings, do they? I bet they sell so many shirts at the stadium Megastore after the unveiling that it would be worth it to let the people into the stadium for free. The club gets good publicity and they also lure potential merchandise buyers to the stadium. Besides...people always complain that they can't relate to the footballers of today because of the big money involved and the mega star status of the stars, so although these kind of events are impressive, but it just the sort of thing that just widens the gap between the fan and the players. Maksimov
I think it's alright when people fill a stadium to see team Brazil in training, but these sort of public unveilings come a bit too close to cult worship that some countries have for their leaders and that just doesn't seem like healthy way to treat these players. Gem
Dammit I'm going to say it - I don't care, I think he comes across a nice lad. Speaks well, seems quite respectful and doesn't stop smiling. Then I look at vile human beings like Carjacker and Barton and wonder why, the former especially, is worshipped by the press.
TheWestwayWonder
Brit, you have a point, but at the same time, I doubt any club in the world could match what Madrid did there. I was very very impressed during the Kaka presentation, because he came out in front of all their trophies, and four massive pictures of Raul, ZIdane, Juanito and DiStefano. The Ronaldo one was obviously even bigger but I felt had more blatant hero worship about it. But seeing him do keepy uppys with that little kid, and then sign the ball with a big grin on his face, I almost forgot that the guy was a total asshole. They don't actually sell tickets to these unveilings, do they? I bet they sell so many shirts at the stadium Megastore after the unveiling that it would be worth it to let the people into the stadium for free. The club gets good publicity and they also lure potential merchandise buyers to the stadium. Youve pretty much hit it on the head there. There has been so much buzz about this transfer for about 2 years now, even if they werent to charge (I dont know if they did) they mustve sold untold thousands of Ronaldo and Kaka shirts in teh last few days. Allegedly the week Beckham signed they sold 60k out of the club shop. I can see similar numbers for both these guys. This is, of course, part of Perez's plan that the sensationalism and success generated from this team will pay back those astronomical transfers. Its pretty smart, but it obviously makes the club into a pure money making entity, trying to make a buck out of anything BTW, Van Nistelrooy was number 17 for them. Personally, i thought they would give Ronaldo a number like 10 or 11, because I think of 9 as a striker's number. But I guess he wanted the shirt of Di Stefano...and Madrid legend Javier Saviola

Maksimov
BTW, Van Nistelrooy was number 17 for them. Ok, I was just wondering because I saw that Ronaldo got #9 and then I checked Real's wiki page and Nistelrooy didn't have a number on the list of players, but Ronaldo was already marked as #9, so I just assumed Nistelrooy had been the former #9 as it's a traditional number for a striker and he used to be their main striker before the injury. Sheva
The only thing i don't like about Ronaldo is his pure arrogance, when he was standing infront of the 80,000 crowd his head was about to explode. He knew he was the best player in the world and he had that grin on his face, he knows he is the best player in the world and he wants to be protected because of it. I hate it when someone fairly tackles ronaldo and he stays down looking for the free kick and when it's not giving he pops back up moan flapping his arms everywhere. I suppose we have Drogba and his staying down ability so we can't say much.
TheWestwayWonder
Yeah there was an element of Riefenstahl-esque, god-like adulation going on in that ceremony. He had that big sh*t eating grin on his face (a yankeeism....the phrase not the activity) but I also chuckled a little when those nutters broke past the barrier to touch him, and he got that sheepish "uh oh" look and started jogging off Ok, I was just wondering because I saw that Ronaldo got #9 and then I checked Real's wiki page and Nistelrooy didn't have a number on the list of players, but Ronaldo was already marked as #9, so I just assumed Nistelrooy had been the former #9 as it's a traditional number for a striker and he used to be their main striker before the injury. yeah, you would assume so, considering van Nistelrooy was utterly deadly for them (63 in 93 games!!!!) but I think when he originally signed he had to take 17 because the other (real) Ronaldo had it at the time. However, I am one of those people who likes to see players conform to traditional numbers, as pedantic as it is. Which is why I had a word with my buddy B.B. aka the Buckmiester about shipping out Boularouz and Sidwell. 9? The number 9 FFS?
