Last Movie You Watched

Featured Replies

Just watched 'Shutter Island' - it has been a long time since Scorsese has made a great film and the wait just got a little longer. If films were turkeys then Christmas dinner has just been secured for the population of a small city.

I was going to watch this film a few weeks ago but was warned of it by a mate, he said it was appalling. So I never bothered with it, sounds like I made a good decision (I watched the new Clash of the Titans instead, which was a good remake)

Shutter Island is a decent film, but it tried to be one of those films where you have to work out the ending before it tells you, but it was obvious how it would end in the first 15 minutes. Oh and the green screen is SHOCKING. It's a good watch and DiCaprio is pretty good in it, nowhere near as good as he is in Inception, but still a great performance.

Watched Blood Diamond the other night (DiCaprio again) and apart from his dodgy accent (a cross between South African and Australian, can never quite tell which is which....) I really enjoyed it. Good story, good action, good ending. Liked it a lot.

Cemetary Junction. Great soundtrack, rubbish film.

Four Lions. Fell asleep. I will watch it again though. I'm a big for on The Day Today and Armardo Ianucci shows.

What was the last Scorsese film you consider to be good?

Not a film but I thought his 'No Direction Home' Dylan documentary was good.

The last interesting film he did was 'Bringing Out the Dead' but that was more of an interesting idea that didn't turn out to be a great film.

Personally I don't think he has made anything good since 'Casino' and that is 15 years ago now.

Never seen his documentariies, but I thought Casino was a rip off of Goodfellas. Didn't find it that original

Scott

I wouldn't say it was a rip off of Goodfellas, more that it was always going to be compared to it due to the fact they are both Scorcese films, both gangster films and both star De Niro and Pesci - it was practically a sequel!

The whole US based gangster genre is pretty hard to be all that original in (at least if you are aiming at big Hollywood audiences) and you can equally say Goodfellas is no Godfather (which it isn't)

Oh dear God. There's four hours of my life I'll never get back that I could have spent reading a good book, or helping BV2 with his crossword. Just drove half an hour to see Inception - what a load of fornicating balderdash. Only a tiny cameo role from Pete Postlethwaite provided anything that could be any stretch of the imagination be called acting.

Oh I opened your post in fear and trepidation lest someone was attacking me for my scathing remarks. It is a relief not to be alone! If any has NOT seen Inception, then take advice from Moi and maddoo - DON'T BOTHER!

Moi,

How can I trust your opinion when you rated Shutter Island?

Shutter Island was OK compared to Inception! That should tell you how bad Inception was, given your low opinion of Shutter Island.

OK? I believe you described it as an 'excellent film' with 'brilliant acting' - not bad for an 'OK' film

Your memory is better than mine, or you've trolled all through the posts!

Personally, even though I didn't think it was particularly good, I would say it is worth watching, but for the concept, not the execution. Probably not at the Cinema though, as it's a bit pricey just for a concept... probably wait for it to be on TV.

If you're interested in the concept of reality manipulation, you should read The Magus by John Fowles (who also wrote The Collector and the French Lieutenant's Woman, among others)

I'm sure there are better works on the subject, but it's always less effort to watch a film, and I like many others living in the modern age am quite the lazy git.

Incidentally, I'm currently rewatching Children of Men, one of my all time favourite films, and it happens to be on ITV (one of my least favourite TV channels).

If that's the one with Clive Owen protecting the first pregnant woman for yonks, the only good thing in that was Michael Caine!

Eggy, I thought you were a student? Am I confusing you with someone else? Are you telling me you don't read because it's less effort to watch TV?

It is that film, and it's excellent, so hush Moi. :P

I am indeed a student... well, I'm just at college as a mature student and working part time, should be going to Uni next year at the ripe old age of 22. I do read, but I like lazing in front of the TV. In fact at the moment I have about three books on the go (short attention span, probably caused by the films).
