The Y-Word

Featured Replies

Its a good idea and hopefully will stop some of the more unseemly chants at grounds. But will they also do one to show the Spuds to make them stop doing helicopter noises at our ground? I realise racism is a completely different thing, but the Spuds sing a song about Adebayor which is equally as racist, so I`m not entirely comfortable with this video and project.

Also if they want fans to stop singing "we all hate y*ds and y*ds and y*ds"etc, then Tottenham need to stop calling themselves the y*ds.

Heard them talk about it on talksport earlier, can't do any harm (although won't make a difference for some).

Some mug sitting near me in west stand v Wigan kept on calling out the y*d is coming on when Yossi was getting ready.

I know a large percentage of folk don't consider the chanting to be racist, or mean it that way, but like they said on the radio if people chanted niggers in the same context would that be acceptable?

I agree with Hutch completely. Spurs fans call themselves the Y*ds. Does anyone White/Black/Asian people refer to themselves as the N-World, H-Word or P-Word respectively? I certainly don't and never have and I don't know anyone else of any ethnic background that does.

This will only work if THFC themselves tell fans their fans to stop calling themselves and chanting the Y-Word.

There are also all kinds of disgusting chants that IMO need to be stamped out. I've heard countless Matthew Harding songs every time we go to Upton Park, and the Munich/Hillsbrough chants amongst Man City/United/Liverpool fans are well publicised.

Homophobia is equally as offensive as racism, when Spurs fans abused Campbell and when Blatter made his comments about it recently, there was a perfect opportunity to try and stamp it out of the game, yet it was completely swept under the carpet.

There are certain anti-Spurs chants that I refuse to join in with, but the bottom line is until THFC make the first move, Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham fans in particular (or any rival London club) will not stop.

It is racist and should definitely be stopped, and I can understand the thinking behind the video. The problem I have with it is worse happens than this, and the Spurs fans are as bad as any other when it comes to disgusting chants (and racist chants). I`m just not sure of why they feel the need to make such a video highlighting this one thing.

I agree, not sure why they felt there was a need for this video, especially given that they call themselves by that word.

Question from the American though: what is the "P" word? Is it "Paki" or is it some word I'm not aware of?

Whoever spearheaded this campaign tottally blew it! "N-word, P-word , Y-word..." what is this sesame street?

and im pretty sure I hear someone yell ni**er 10 times a game, so yeah that still happens too

Wo wo wo there.

Spurs fans call them selves y*dS? what has that got to do with it... being a spurs fan does not by default make you jewish. Being a spurs fan does not make you an ethnic background, spurs fans calling them selves y*dS is not jewish people refering to them selves as y*d. It is a racisit term and just because they use the word doesnt mean we should. We should be bigger than that. There are some things that transend football and this is one of them. For some reason they have made it acceptable... Its not!!

Well said! It is an extremely offensive word which all Jews have a right to object to. Those of you who have only ever met the word in a football context may not even realise just how offensive it is.

I'm not saying it is acceptable, just pointing out the fact that it won't stop until Spurs fans themselves abolish the term. It should not be acceptable for Spurs fans OR Other fans to use the term. Just because a person is a supporter of a different team to another it doesn't make the term any less racist or justifiable.

The Kick it Out campaign will not work unless all clubs are unanimous in doing there best efforts to kick it out.

Anti-Semitism has been a problem long before other types of racism, IMO it is far more deep rooted and as much as I'm glad to see Football tackling the issue, I don't think it will stop people from chanting anti-Spurs chants at games unless Spurs try and tackle it themselves.

I don't refer to myself as the N-Word, as I'm sure anyone from a Pakistani background wouldn't refer to themselves as the P-Word or a person from White Background the H-Word. The fact Spurs fans (most of whom aren't even Jewish) actively refer to themselves as the Y*ds makes it not only difficult but hypocritical in expecting fans of others not to do it.

But surely there has to be a start somewhere. It is not acceptable for anyone to use these derogatory ways of referring to a person's ethnic background. But if everyone says there's no point in taking a stand against it until all the teams do, nothing will ever get done. So the Kick It Out campaign is at least a step in the right direction.

Mind you, these f**king sassenachs can take a running jump! :D

The trouble is with 'the Y word' for me is the fact that is used in a completely different vein by different fans.

Growing up as a season ticket holder with the old man in the 90s, we'd all shout "y*ddo" at Ian Walker, even after he played for Tottenham. It was because he is/was a Tottenham player, and we hate Tottenham. I've never heard targeted, explicit anti-semitism at a football game (apart from one drunk idiot at a CL game shouting 'do I smell gas?' at Bayern players) - unless you consider the foreskin song anti-semitic, as it makes reference directly to a Jewish custom.

Obviously there is no one who is going to condone any reference to the Holocaust or WW2 - and if people are shouting this crap out, then I have no problem with them getting a lengthy ban from football grounds. The issue for me is that people still don't see the word as offensive, and they are not intending to use the word in a racially defamatory manner.

I would like the word to die out of usage, and be replaced with something else that we can chant against Tottenham players/fans - but I can't see it happening for a while. I would like to see Jewish players in the Premier League stepping up and making an impassioned plea, with how it affects them personally - but even then, I don't know if that will help to stem the usage of the 'Y-word'.

You can educate the fans all you wish, but it will take a long time to die out - as racism against black people did. Until then, people will be clinging to the 'but they call themselves it' and 'Utd/Liverpool fans sing as bad songs' - which will only perpetuate the usage of the offensive material, and sadly these arguments will only disappear if all fans meet with each other and sign a pledge of what 'banter' is out of order, because sadly, some people just don't see how mocking dead people/being racially offensive is just not what is expected of fans these days.

In an ideal world, I'd replace every usage of the 'y-word' with something new, and all this will debate will disappear - and we can use the new word with the venom for the horrible bunch that only the 'y-word' carries at the moment.

What really f**king does my head in is the lack of attention paid to context. In this context, 'y*d' refers to Tottenham fans, not Jewish people- linguistically speaking it is a different word that has undergone a polysemic shift.

There is an argument that this is not directly racist as it now also means 'a Tottenham fan'. There was a time when gay didn't mean homosexual.

Anyway, in the great scheme of things this is not the world's or football's most pressing issue and I am 99% certain that this video will not make an iota of difference. In fact, if anything it will lead to a brief spike in y*d chants.

One other thing, this project was instigated by David Baddiel and his brother who one day in the East Stand finally had enough of accepting it in it's Spurs fan context. So it isn't an anti Chelsea pro Spurs project as such.

edit. Having just read that Mirror article and the reference to "Spurs are on their way....", I guess it's hard to argue that that isn't somewhat anti-semitic.

Question - Will the Tottenham Fan's with y*d Army Flags / Banner's or Northern y*ds be thrown out of SB and charged with having racist / offensive material ? - doubt it .

They need to get there own house in order first in my book

That is (very slightly) like saying we should have waited for the Nazis to get their house in order before declaring war...
