May 30, 201214 yr I've been looking everywhere to try and find that out - and finally found an account in Clive Batty's book "Kings Of The Kings Road". Apparently, Tommy Baldwin was drinking with some of his ex-Arsenal team-mates in Southgate (north London), when they all decided to go to a party. Tommy was in the back of a car with a girl while one his mates was driving. Suddenly Tommy's mate noticed they were being followed by a police car, and for some reason put his foot down, heading in the direction of Hackney. Tommy's main worry was that Dave Sexton didn't like his players drinking, to put it mildly, and he had a bottle of vodka on him. and so he hurled the bottle out of the window at high speed as the chase continued. They eventually got caught in a road-block at Old Street. Tommy was (wrongly) charged with assaulting a policeman and throwing a bottle of vodka at a police car! Next morning he went to Old Street Magistrates Court after a night in the cells, no change of clothes or washing facilities, his shirt ripped and his face covered in blood (been there, done that a few times). He pleaded not guilty and it was taken to Crown Court, where he was found guilty of assault and given four months in prison. Tommy was let out on appeal, and Chelsea were very supportive of him. Dave Sexton attended the appeal hearing with him, and the court decided the case wasn't proven due to the police evidence being messed up, and Tommy's sentence was suspended. Hope this post isn't going to cause any problems for anyone - it was a long time ago, and was explained in more detail in the above mentioned book. If the mods think it should be deleted, that's fine, I've no problem with it. Cheers for posting . Love these tales.
May 30, 201214 yr Thanks everyone, I will get some more up soon, just been a bit busy at work and knackered in the evenings.
May 31, 201214 yr Superb pics PB. Many thanks. Allegedly from my era but buggered if I can remember a fraction of what you lot do. I do remember being gutted by "The Doc" going.
May 31, 201214 yr Peckham Blue, you're a star! so many great photo's and memories there, those games, most of which I was at with my brother Kev, are still pretty vivid in my memory. The Shrewsbury F.A. cup match in '66 Is particularly memorable as it was the first time we sat in the benches in the "new" west stand, we couldn't get in there for the 6 round game against Hull, (2-2) so we stood right at the top of the north west terrace right next to the floodlight base and hardly saw a bloody thing! ah, happy days.
June 2, 201214 yr I remember my old man being really annoyed that Eddie Mac left in the summer of 1977 over a Company Car ! Here's footage of Eddie Mac in 1970 FA Cup Final, for your enjoyment The funny thing is, the ref waves just play on Edited June 2, 201214 yr by erskblue

Eddie Mac was already a Chelsea legend by then, but that tackle made sure he'd be a legend forever - after all, it was Billy Bremner!

Peter Bonetti then tells Eddie Mac to 'just get on' with it instead of being concerned about Bremner Edited June 2, 201214 yr by erskblue
June 2, 201214 yr My dad sat me down and made watch a video of that ot match as a kid and said "that is Chelsea, you fight until you have nothing left to give" and its something I always remembered when I played. Though they could really have played that game without a ball
June 3, 201214 yr My dad sat me down and made watch a video of that ot match as a kid and said "that is Chelsea, you fight until you have nothing left to give" and its something I always remembered when I played. Though they could really have played that game without a ball Yeah a few 'hefty tackles' flying in in both games. Mind you put Chopper Harris, Eddie Mac, Dave Webb v Johny Giles, Big Norman Hunter and Billy Bremner on a pitch... Oh and I love the classic 'Franny Lee v Norman Hunter boxing match' footage. Derby v Leeds 1975. I know it ain't Chelsea, but I love watching it every time. Edited June 3, 201214 yr by erskblue
June 4, 201214 yr More about Tommy Baldwin - from daily express. sorry about the quality. "I was obliged to punch Baldwin in the face" - only a copper could come up with that! I believe Tommy's story totally, not least because I've been through a very similar experience a couple of times myself.
June 5, 201214 yr "I've been through a very similar experience a couple of times myself. You can't compare TB's story with being caught for indecent exposure under Hastings pier.
June 5, 201214 yr You can't compare TB's story with being caught for indecent exposure under Hastings pier. What I was exposing was pretty decent, or so I've been led to believe
June 6, 201214 yr Cooke, Charlie Classic winger of the great Chelsea side of the late-60’s and the relegation-bound Chelsea side of the mid-1970’s. Scorer of 59 goals in 512 appearances throughout a British football career that started at Aberdeen in 1960 and took in Dundee and Crystal Palace before the lure of the NASL took hold. Made a name for himself at LA Aztecs (see right with Franz Beckenbauer) and latterly Memphis Rogues where he played under manager and former Chelsea team-mate Eddie McCreadie. A great passer of the ball and capable of brilliantly accurate passes like the one that opened the scoring in this match against Arsenal in 1969. www.footballfairground.com/random

June 8, 201214 yr Forest V Chelsea 1976/77. Dunno if already posted. Poor commentary sound. Ah yes, that was the game when the old bill let us take over the Trent End rather than risk the consequences of making us take it. Great day out, Forest battered everywhere!
