'Blue is the colour' is one of the first songs I ever remember hearing, I was 5 when it was recorded and it is certainly the first football song I remember.

That’s the only match I’ve been to with the missus that she actually enjoyed.  We were at the front of the Stevenage Road stand enclosure near the cottage, loads of Chelsea in there.

@erskblue You're right, the photo was taken in 1905. 

I'm intrigued by the posts behind what appears to be the goal? Posts for supporting the net. There appears to be a couple of hurdles in front of the North Stand and one looks like a water jump. For a steeplechase run? Saying that, the water jump is usually at the other end of the athletics track or for some reason the race was run clockwise rather than anti-clockwise. 

Steptoe and Son and their Horse and Cart in the goal-mouth?

The photo was taken in 1971. Greyhound racing took place at the Bridge between 1933 and 1968 so I guess that after it stopped the cinder track was grassed over.

A bit off subject but found this article about the history of the London Athletic Club which used Stamford Bridge between 1877 and 1933. In 1933 the club moved to the White City Stadium.

Bloody cinders!? All the dogs would come off with lacerated paws. No, it was always grass but, when the ground got rock hard, especially  in the winter, they'd put down a layer of straw all around. It was the only track I knew that put down straw as a back up. All the others would put down peat or replace the grass with sand to save maintenance costs.

Not necessarily vintage but a couple of pictures of the Bridge during redevelopment.

1929 AAA Championships at Stamford Bridge, London.

Short, but decent clip from British Pathe News.

AAA Championships were held at The Bridge in 1886.89,92, 95 and98.

Then in 1902,05,06, 1909-1914 inclusive.

Then from 1919 -1931. The 1931 Championships were the last to be held at The Bridge.

Incidentally the AAA Championships of 1880 and 1883 were held at near by Lille Bridge.

You're right. Without the ground owned by the LAC we may not have had a ground to move in to. One of the founding fathers of the club - and a business partner of Gus Mears - was Frederick Parker who had worked for the London Athletic Club. There are references to the London Athletic Club in the Chelsea Official Biography written by Rick Glanvill a few years ago. Will try and scan and post the relevant pages on here.

Had it actually occurred in the 1923 AAA 100 yards, it would have taken place at The Bridge.

@erskblueChariots of Fire is a great film. One of my favourite films. As you say, there are bits of "fiction" in the film but what a great couple of runners.
