May 2, 20206 yr 'King' Kerry Dixon's last game for us was today, back in 1992. It was Everton away. Some striker for us, Over nine seasons between 1983 and 1992, Kerry Dixon became one of the best loved players ever to appear for Chelsea. Kerry joined from Reading for £175,000 as the team was rebuilt following near relegation to the Third Division and he made an immediate impact scoring twice as promotion favourites were beaten 5-0 on the opening day. Kerry scored 34 goals that year as the club claimed the Second Division title. In his first season in the top flight Kerry scored 36 goals to win the Golden Boot and take his Chelsea tally to 70 in just 101 games, earning a call up to the England squad in the process. A serious muscle injury in January 1986 slowed Kerry's progress though and he was never the same player again. He almost left the club as the team was slowly broken up and relegation followed in 1988. Ironically, this helped to rekindle some of his earlier form and Kerry totalled 25 league goals as he won the Second Division title for the second time. Back in the First Division he scored 26 as we finished fifth, our highest position since 1970. Two poor seasons followed though, and he joined Southampton in 1992, with 193 Chelsea goals to his name, tantalisingly just nine goals short of Bobby Tambling's record. https://www.chelseafc.com/en/about-chelsea/history/former-players/kerry-dixon Edited May 2, 20206 yr by erskblue

In my time supporting Chelsea we've only had four successful no 9's and I go back to when I first remembered and that's the mid 70's, King Kerry, JFH, Drogs and Costa, all great strikers but Kerry was the ultimate Roy of the Rovers hero and in THAT team as well, another 80's memory

I fully accept through 'Blue tinted' glasses .

It has to be said Kerry went through some bad patches of form where he became a bit of a boo boy for some sections of the fans. Some days he looked brilliant others a bit clumsy. He had a bad injury in 86 and his form after that isn't great for the next two seasons 26 goals in 69 games. I love Kerry Dixon and I'm glad to see he's getting through his recent troubles and he'll always be a legend but you can't judge Dixon against Drogba.

No your right, you can't judge Dixon against Drogba, Drogba was without doubt the best number 9 the premiership has seen and definitely our best striker, but I would put Dixon in top 4 of ours since the 70's, the amount of goals he scored on sh*t pitches with defenders that went through the back of you, he was at Reading in Div 3 then went to us in div 2 and ended up being div 1 top scorer in 1990 and playing for England, certainly worked his way up. King Kerry in THAT team, in that kit, with that away support, don't get much better

Let's not forget he played two seasons in the old second division and also played in a team that got relegated. Playing for Reading and then Chelsea was only a league up and football was completely different then we signed Speedie from Darlington, Eddie from Wrexham and Pat Nevin from Clyde. He also played better with someone alongside him Speedie, Durie, Wilson. I'm not here to slag of Kerry Dixon but some perspective is needed.

Not sure if I said but number 9's , Eidur, Zola Hughes and Vialli werent number 9's fantastic strikers though, if Dixon could of taken penalties better he would of been our all time goal scorer. Football may of been different but to come from Reading in Division 3 to England striker, Div 1 top scorer and our third highest goal scorer isn't bad.

Kerry was a great servant to the club and is rightly a legend but to be honest I don't think we've had a traditional number 9 since Kerry possibly Vialli. JFH wasn't a typical number 9 either he was better with the ball at his feet. Edited May 2, 20206 yr by bluehaze

Wasn't the best wording. And you rightly made a good valid point about perspective. Glad both Dixon and Drogba played for us though. Edited May 2, 20206 yr by erskblue

Speaking of Vialli, imo he had the best movement I've seen from a striker, unfortunately he was past his best and his pace had gone when he arrived, but his movement and runs were exceptional, another one not mentioned Crespo real class

Couldn't quite believe Vialli was joining us back then, Mind you, he was on the verge of joining Glasgow Rangers (!) before we stepped in. Then he had a very late change of mind.
