We'd escaped relegation by the skin of our teeth so the pressure was off. Bobby got a great reception and, if memory serves, he was presented with a gold cigarette case by the Chelsea chairman. Peter Osgood scored the only goal, famously memorialized by his outspread hands and big grin. I saw grown men with tears in their eyes that day.
May 8, 20206 yr This is the most coverage I've ever seen of this game. Seems we weren't the only club to have three wheelers parked inside !. Keeper makes a clanger for the goal but makes an outstanding save later on.

Both sides Blackpool and Chelsea had an extremely large contingent of highly inebriated Scottish Holiday makers enjoying playing throw the glass empties over the dividing fence, lots were watching the game covering their heads with their hands. I was approached by one individual who asked me which player was David Hay, he was so inebriated he could still not make out David by covering one eye. He may have been drunk, but that's a pretty tasteless gesture after what happened to Davie Hay.

We could never come up with a song for him that didn't sound a bit silly. They still wore stockings too. Trevor Anderson on the bench. A young lad from Belfast who secured our 1st Division place with a winner at Elland Road.

I was only 11, coming up 12, and this was my first full season. Queued up for hours to get in to this one, and was a little worried that one of our country's footballing heroes would get a bit of bird from the home fans, turned out well though as all 4 sides of the ground gave him a great send off.

It was a great send-off. I went to his testimonial game against Celtic earlier that season. Celtic must have brought at least 7000 fans with them because the place was heaving.

If we'd beaten Croatia 2 years ago then went on to win the WC, I'd hazard a guess that Harry Kane and Dele Alli would have got a similar, warm reception at the Bridge the following season..... or maybe not.

Albert Alexander, who wrote the welcome message in the programme you posted, was a real gentleman. He backed Joe Mercer against the rival faction who wanted Malcolm Allison to manage on his own. The Allison faction won and Joe was removed. Allison went down in flames (twice) and Joe went on to manage Coventry then England after Revie skedaddled to the desert. Great football men whose like we'll never see again.

Funnily enough I met a lovely sort the week before lockdown whose surname is Pickersgill. My hours daily exercise is lying on the bed thinking of her. Wound her up the other day by saying with a name like that she must keep chickens, to which she replied “ what in a Rainhill dormer bungalow you soft ....” David Hay was the first CFC transfer I remember, straight after the 74 World Cup
