I reckon it's the first home game back in the First Division v Sunderland on the Bank Holiday Monday. (A one-nil win with Canners getting the goal.) For some reason, I seem to recall Uncle Ken organised a chopper to bring in the Canon League Div II trophy for a fancy presentation. It must be early season, as there's green grass on the pitch! The players' kit looks about right for 1984, as does the West Stand. Happily be proven wrong though...
April 23, 20206 yr Some good clips here and as having a decent volley myself I appreciated these. Covers a number of our teams:
April 24, 20206 yr Hi Ewan re the helicopter picture I think you are spot on ,great shout ,there’s another picture on here from a different angle and I’m sure there is a Sunderland substitute on the pitch in his red and white kit

April 24, 20206 yr Love the way that one copper is looking at the game and the others are keeping an eye on the benches.

We have all talked about this Highbury game for years, and our support etc, but I wonder what Arsenal fans think and remember of the game, it must be the largest away support ever at a London Derby, and probably one of the largest away supports ever in the English game

In 86-87 we had the whole clock end although it was far from packed and some Arsenal came in pre-match and were giving a caning.

Arsenal opened with a home game v Luton on 27th August with an official attendance of 39,347. 45,329 was the 'official attendance' for our game there on 25th Aug 1984. There is far more inside Highbury than the official 45,329 given for our game. The ITV match footage shows that difference if you watch both.

Just needs to add 'and half volleys' to the title. Essien's was incredible but is a bittersweet goal. Can't say I get any pleasure at all being reminded of that match. Stanic - best debut goal ever? Pedro - best pre-season goal ever? If Messi had scored that Lamps' volley v Stoke, it would be in any compilation of the most skilful finishes in history. JT and Cahill - best-ever volleys by a centre-half? (John Dempsey might quibble). Ray Wilkins v Sheff Utd in '77 and JFH at Old Trafford (Ranieri's first match) should both be in there.
