About three weeks ago we reached a point in the season when every man and his blog was giving their rankings, best XIs and players of the season. Naturally a lot of those featured players from other teams, so could be dismissed as irrelevant. We at The Shed End like to take a little time to ruminate on such things, so finally, after a liquor-fuelled hiatus of a few years, I can bring you the Shed End's Player of the Season Awards.
Any newbies may be unaware that in addition to being the forum's most hilarious, second-most handsome and eighteenth-drunkest poster, I also maintain an Excel spreadsheet which tallies all votes cast in our per-match MOTM threads. All the punch cards have now been processed, and I now finally have the numbers from this most topsy-turvy of seasons.
Even with a dataset as small as ours, a season with a change in management (and a range of contrasts from 'quite good but flawed', to 'totally inept', to 'still kind of inept but solid', to 'apparently the best team in Europe') offers us an opportunity for introspection. One useful factor is the comparability in fixture quantity - Lampard managed 29 games, and Tuchel 30. Pleasingly enough, each of the 28 players who featured for us this season picked up at least 1 vote, with the exception of poor Loftus-Cheek's unfortunate cameo vs Brighton in the season opener.

    Some introductory stats:
    Total number of games: 59
Total number of votes cast: 1772
Average number of votes per game: 30.03 (23.59 under Lampard, 32.27 under Tuchel... bunch of glory hunters.)
Game with highest number of votes cast: Man City (N CL): 61
Game with lowest number of votes cast: Tottenham (A LC); Rennes (A CL): 12

As a result of the average vote numbers being higher than during previous seasons, I've opted for only two measuring sticks: total number of MOTM awards, followed by the overall number of individual votes as a tie-breaker. The largely vestigial 'points' system has been discarded as a result of players no longer being able to win awards when only picking up two or three votes. The lowest individual winning total was Zouma with 4 (vs Tottenham in the League Cup), however this was really an anomaly. It also meant that joke/tactical votes had less of an effect, although I did notice that Jorginho's eight votes under Lampard came in seven separate matches. No comment...
I don't think anyone will be too surprised by individual players performing drastically better or worse following the switch between managers. Even the perenially underappreciated (in MOTM threads at least) Azpilicueta picked up a bit:

So here's what the table looked like under Lampard:

And here's what it looked like under Tuchel:

You will probably note, as a result of his finishing first in both halves of the season that:

Mason Mount is The Shed End's 2020/21 Player of the Season.

While I agree with the result (which is quite possibly a first for this), I did feel a little bad for Kanté, who only missed out by 16 votes and also strolled the awards for both CL semi-finals as well as the final.

    So via most MOTM awards:
    1) Mount (8 awards)
    1) Kanté (8 awards)
    3) James (5 awards)
    4) Mendy (4 awards)

    Via total votes:
    1) Mount (257 votes)
    2) Kanté (241 votes)
    3) Havertz (120 votes)
    4) James (111 votes)

Other stats (feel free to stop reading at any point):

    Premier League:
Mount leads the way with 6 awards, followed by Kanté with 4, then James, Mendy, Pulisic and Chilwell all with 3. Interestingly we only won 2 of the games Mount won the award for - including the capitulation at the King Power and the ludicrous 3-3 against West Brom.
    Champions League:
Unsurprisingly Kanté was ahead in this one with 4 (all of them knockout games including both semis and the final). Mount won 2 (also both knockouts), then 1 each for James, Mendy, Ziyech, Silva, Jorginho, Gilmour and Giroud. I'm sure you can guess which game Giroud won his award for...
    FA/Cup League Cup:
I'm throwing these two together as our League Cup campaign was only two games long. Zouma and Abraham got 2 each; Havertz, James, Hudson-Odoi and Azpilicueta (the semi against Man City) all got one each.

So Mount and Kanté are both streets ahead of the rest of the squad. Even Kanté in second has more than double the number of votes of Havertz in third. The awards were more spread out than they normally would be: 20 different players won at least one MOTM award this season. Whether this is a result of us playing such a high number of games or as a result of the necessary rotation in such a compressed season I don't know.
This is the full table if anybody is interested:

    Thanks for reading!

Thought that this would be the best place to post this.
    https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2021/06/21/new-canoville-suite-at-stamford-bridge
It is announced today that Chelsea Football Club is recognising the important contribution made by our former player Paul Canoville by naming part of Stamford Bridge in his honour.
What was previously called the Centenary Hall, a matchday hospitality area and non-matchday events location inside the Shed End Stand, will now be known as the Canoville Suite.
A fine footballer in his time, a skilful winger with pace and the ability to beat an opponent, Paul is also defined by his indomitable spirit and the way he also beat a series of major challenges during his life, including some that threatened to take that life.
For many years now Paul has used those experiences to help other people, including in partnership with projects run by the Chelsea Foundation, such as equality lessons in schools using examples from his life to deliver important messages on respect and diversity, and discussion sessions in prisons. Through his own foundation, he works with schools and youth organisations to promote confidence, well-being, diversity and resilience.
Earlier this year, Paul was in a critical condition in hospital after complications set in following an operation, but his against-the-odds recovery was the latest of the big obstacles he has cleared which have included cancer, homelessness, drug addiction, his career ending prematurely due to injury and, most famously, racism within the game of football.
As the first black player to be selected for the Chelsea men’s first team, Paul endured prejudice that extended to abuse from a considerable proportion of those at games to support Chelsea and from within his own team.
The exemplary fortitude he showed then, pursuing his football dream despite often facing adversity alone, was the same strength crucial in more recent times when in hospital. Parallels could even be drawn with his bounce back from critical illness and turning around a 3-0 half-time deficit away from home, as Chelsea did in a big cup-tie at Sheffield Wednesday in 1985.
Paul came on at the break and scored within seconds before netting again to put the Blues 4-3 ahead. Even though that match ended in a draw, a follow-up replay was won in the final moments when his corner was headed in by Mickey Thomas. By that stage his name was sung by the fans and it remains his most famous game in a Chelsea shirt, challenged by our first game back in the top flight at Arsenal earlier that season, and a 6-1 win against Swansea in the cherished promotion year the season before.
Paul played a big part in that special campaign, and against Swansea completed a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge at the end of the ground where the new Canoville Suite is located.
The entrance stairwell and area in the Suite will tell Paul’s history with words and images, and Chelsea’s wider diversity story will be in the rest of the Suite, with a celebration of other ground-breaking players for whom Paul paved the way at the club.
On having part of Stamford Bridge named in his honour, Paul said: ‘The love I have for the club is hard to put into words. It became such a big part of my life that at one stage when I was going through my toughest challenge with my health, it was the one thing that I held onto that kept me going.
‘I knew I had unfinished business and that being part of Chelsea’s future as well as its history was my destiny. I am so proud that the club has honoured me in this way and I can’t wait to start repaying them for it, supporting Neil Bath and his team at the greatest academy in world football, and with my work going into schools and telling vulnerable kids “keep going, you can do it!” And finally of course, my role as an ambassador for club that I love so much, the club where the Canoville Suite will now forever tell the story of a journey that led to Chelsea FC becoming one of the most successful clubs for players of colour in the history of the English game!’
Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck added: ‘When the club was considering where at Stamford Bridge both Paul and his legacy should be honoured, we decided the suite that will now bear his name was the place, as it is within the stadium and with the widest view of the pitch where he made history.
‘We were all hugely concerned that Paul may be lost to us earlier this year and therefore delighted that such an important story as his with Chelsea continues. We are never surprised by the spirit and resilience he shows.
‘There are the parts of Paul’s story that made headlines, but there have been quieter contributions too with Paul working with us behind the scenes and away from the pitch on important projects.
‘Paul is also part of our hospitality team of former star players who work as hosts at Stamford Bridge on match days, and when he now walks through the Canoville Suite as part of that role, we hope it brings a special smile to his face.’

This club never ceases to amaze us. It's always a roller coaster ride, but I don't think we would have it any other way. It will take some time for the events of the last 18 hours to sink in properly.
It's something we will remember for decades to come.
I thought 2012 was the pinnacle, and we wouldn't feel the same sense of relief and happiness but this equally matches it. To say we're now 2x Champions League winners is special.
We now enter a very elite group of European clubs (13 to be exact) to have won the competition on more than one occasion. Makes me smile and laugh to know we're only 1 Champions League final victory away from equalling Manchester United 😎
It cannot be understated we're now entrenched as one of the big clubs in Europe. The success of the past 25 years, including 2 Champions League trophies backs this up.
There's so many great individual stories from this success.
Thomas Tuchel did the impossible and cemented himself as a managerial legend of the club regardless of what happens from now on. We'll be singing his name forever! We defeated two top flight winners (Manchester City and Atletico Madrid) and defeated the historically most successful club in the Champions League (Real Madrid). Azpiliceuta has won all major trophies at the club. Kante will go down as an all-time great. Like Drogba, the man always delivers on the biggest occasions. Havertz will go down in folklore as a Chelsea goalscorer in a Champions League final alongside Lampard and Drogba. Thiago Silva gets his redemption after falling short with PSG last year. Mateo Kovacic is a 4x Champions League winner. Rudiger and Christensen have had a new lease of life on their careers. The academy graduates were pivotal to our success (Mount and James). There's something extra satisfying seeing our youth succeed at the top. After Real Madrid; Bayern Munich and Chelsea have won the most Champions League trophies since 2012. 2012 marked an end of an era with the old guard. 2021 marks the beginning of a potential dynasty as the squad is much younger this time round. What a club! BLUE IS THE COLOUR!

Congrats to all on here, If we don't add Kane/Haaland and Grealish etc types of players in the summer I think next years title could be going your way also, Incredible to see the turnaround and also sums up how the other lot down the road are so acceptant of mediocrity. Their version of progress is baby steps, Your version of progress is only going and beating a Pep juggernaut three times, Winning a CL, Getting to a FA Cup final etc.
I also think Tuchel might finally be the 'one' for you lot, What I mean by that is he might stick around for longer than 2/3 years as he has the authority of Jose, Less baggage than him but more clout/respect from Abramovich than Lampard/Di Matteo/AVB etc.
