Second biggest bit of news on 2 April 1982. Biggest was what was happening in the South Atlantic. This lot and others went South for a set to.

When I joined in the late 80's I spoke to him, seemed funny the owner coming into the office to officially welcome me.

Later briefly spoke to him on the club train before taking more independent types of travel.

Thought he was ok though laughed at Villa Away when he tried to copy Clough and remove the pitch invaders, instead they grabbed Bates and hoisted him up in the air cheering Kenny Bates, Kenny Bates as they run around the pitch with him held aloft.

It was a shame it was not on Youtube it was hilarious like a Frank Spencers sketch.

In 1989 I did the FA Prelim Coaching Badge, with the idea of spending a summer in the states with North American Soccer Camps. Charlie Cook was a big wheel with this crowd. It didn’t actually happen but a mate went out there and got to know Cookie. He paid semi pro out there ( Cookie) even though he was probably mid 40’s. Because he basically played with a ball all day, every day, coaching or playing, he reckoned he was more skillful then than in his prime.

I had another mate who was an apprentice at Palace when he moved there. He was marching on a bit by then, but apparently the fastest bloke in the team.

Squad photo at media day in the week before the League Cup final v Stoke City in 1972 (we lost 2-1).  Always liked the blue with yellow trim strip, looks classy.
