Looks a bit Derek Hales there…DH famously had a punch up with his Charlton team mate Micky Flanagan during a game. One of them had a testacle removed, didn’t lay on a potentially goal scoring pass and was called a “ greedy one bollocked bastard”….cue fistfight…

Very frustrating player Fillery. He was either very good or total sh*te

Yes. Plus Tommy was the first goal scorer. Still lost 3-1! Much like most games that season!

I remember we often used to take the lead too. Seemed like the common pattern was go 1-0 up, 1-1 by HT and then lose 3-1.

Agree. He scored some memorable goals and could look very classy on his day. Pretty sure his sale in 1983 helped to fund the signings of Dixon, Nevin, Spackman etc. So he left a fine legacy.

Totally agree. My first full season 78/79

we took the lead 19 times W2 D7 L10

Laugh at some of the stuff on the match thread. If they were around and had computers back then the internet would have blown up!!!

It did, in Bates’ book ‘Chelsea - My year’ he describes the clear out at the end of the 82-83 season.  He and John Neal agreed that much of the dross was worthless and should be dumped to get rid of them, and off the payroll, soonest - the only ‘want away’ that was worth anything was Fillery - and a deal was done with QPR.  Apparently he could not get out of the door quickly enough.

In theory he should have had a good central midfield partnership with Johnny B. JB was hard working-  MF could was classy and could spray it around- problem was he was sluggish, couldn’t defend, and probably wasn’t good enough to be carried as a ‘ flair payer”

There was a bit of a conveyor belt going to QPR- Hollins, Webb, Wicks, Fillery.

Btwv RIP Stan Bowles. Not many of the 70s mavericks left

You can add Allan Harris (Chopper’s brother) and Dave Sexton (after a gap) to that list.

Checked online. Incredibly since 1960 25 players have gone from The Bridge to Loftus Road. Unable to upload list on phone

Thanks for checking that - I suspect we had to pay QPR to take Mayes …

One of the worst two or three professional footballers in Europe at the time. Diabolical player.

Saying that his career goal scoring rate was pretty decent. Goal hanging Swindon bastard
