Posted September 8, 201113 yr I'm considering getting a tablet computer for my morning commute but don't know what one is the best. The ipad is seemingly the first option but a windows may be better as it has flash etc, in which case i think i'd lean towards the new sony one. I am definitely going to get one with 3g which means the extra costs need to be considered. Cheers
September 8, 201113 yr i think i'd lean towards the new sony one. I am definitely going to get one with 3g which means the extra costs need to be considered. I haven't tried any of them, but based on what I've heard Sony and Blackberry seem to get the most favourable buzz. I think Sony's 3G version won't be out until November, though.
September 8, 201113 yr I think Samsung's Galaxy Tab is worth a look. Also read some reviews about the Sony pad's unique design as some people find it a bit difficult to handle in certain positions.

I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab months ago and I`m very impressed by it. I bought it for my wife (so she would get her hands of the bloody laptop) and she loves it. Its the best of the lower price ones as far as I can see, though best overall (other than an iPAD) certainly seems to be either the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 or the Motorola Xoom.
September 8, 201113 yr I've had some experience with a variety of tablets. The iPad is undoubtedly the best on offer in terms of the ecosystem and slickness and general ease of use. BUT, it doesn't have flash which could be an issue and it is quite large. The old 7" Galaxy Tab is a good size and feels comfortable to hold but it is slow and clunky and isn't running android designed for tablets. The HTC Flyer is an alternative if you want a smaller tablet. It's 7" but a bit more substantial than the Tab. Currently it is still running android 2.2 but it has the HTC Sense overlay and this has been tweaked for tablets. It will get a honeycomb update shortly which will improve it further. It is quite a heavy tablet though. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is very slick. It is very similar to the iPad 2 which has got it in to trouble with Apple and it has been banned from sale in some parts of Europe. It's still available over here and is the best android tablet for hardware. It is though quite big again so it depends what you want to do with it. Using it around the house should be fine but if you want to use it on a commute you might find it too big. Samsung did announce a new 7.7" Tab last week and that looks very nice. Basically just a shrunk down 10.1. I'd be quite tempted by that one. The Xoom doesn't offer anything over the tab 10.1 and it costs more. I wouldn't touch the Blackberry Playbook. It's pretty slick but the eco system is very lacking. I'm not a Sony fan. My experience of their android phones would keep me away from their tablets. Hope that helps.

September 8, 201113 yr Samsung Galaxy Tab would be the best choice at the moment if you want flash, if you dont want flash go with the iPad.

September 9, 201113 yr ^ This. Although realize that flash content is being slowly converted to work with HTML5. Flash is also a resource hog. Very, very slowly. The main sites may have it done by the next year or so, but many flash games and the video sites that aren't youtube will take a good two or three years to fully move to HTML 5
September 9, 201113 yr I am intrigued..can you be more specific as to the certain positions in which it is unmanageable? My mate told that to me in exactly those words and I did not ask any further questions. Guess its my dirty mind then that I imagined all sorts of horrible things you can do with a tab. On another note, the game "angry birds" would take an all new meaning in this case. Edited September 9, 201113 yr by rahul

The main sites may have it done by the next year or so, but many flash games and the video sites that aren't youtube will take a good two or three years to fully move to HTML 5 Its all rather pathetic the way Apple wont use flash, but its even more pathetic the way each company is now suing the other over tablets and phones etc. HTC has just bought a load of patents from Google so they can go after Apple, Apple have put a halt on Samsungs tablets in a few countries because it has the same basic shape as an iPad (so now Apple own the geometric shape rectangle apparently). Its gonna get messy.

Their argument is that Stanley Kubrick was the first to design the iPad and not Apple. :D Interesting! Edited September 9, 201113 yr by rahul
September 9, 201113 yr I really like Samsung products (not least because I get them on discount being an employee :) ) so I'd strongly pitch for Galaxy Tab 10.1
September 9, 201113 yr Author the sony tablet has the capability to play psp and ps1 games which i think would be a big bonus

September 10, 201113 yr Didn't Apple get caught docotoring photos of one of the phones they're suing to make it look more like an iphone? It was in the Netherlands, I think. Edited September 10, 201113 yr by Eggy McMuffin
