The idol of the 1982 World Cup was admitted to hospital on Thursday after falling ill during a meal at a hotel in Sao Paulo. The former Corinthians hero was rushed to hospital in Sao Paulo on Thursday night with a suspected case of food poisoning, but was immediately placed in intensive care after it was discovered that he had suffered a septic shock, in which bacteria from an infection seeps into the bloodstream and spreads throughout the body. It was the third time in four months that he had been treated an intensive care unit since alcohol abuse caused his stomach to haemorrhage in August. December 4, 201113 yr My all time favorite player, and I will really miss him. That team with him, Paolo Falcao, Junior, Tafferel, Dunga, and others was a pleasure to watch. Kind of like the Barca of the 80s.

December 4, 201113 yr Yes, DKW, he played one game for a really low division team a few years ago, for a good bit of money. Not sure what the particulars were, but maybe that team charged an extra admission for that game, and were able to pay the fee for Socrates' appearance from that.

December 5, 201113 yr As someone said previously, probably the coolest footballer not only of the early 80's but of all time. Played the game at his own pace, effortlessly. If i remember rightly he championed supporters rights at his club (or something similar), was the symbol of his club and Brazil. Wasn't he also a doctor or summats? RIP

December 6, 201113 yr Iconic footballer for me. I remember seeing his picture and thinking he looked the part. I never got the chance to see him play until I got to see some videos when I was around 10. Rest in peace.
December 11, 201113 yr Bit late for this thread but RIP to a real world football legend. Socrates was one of the coolest footballers to have ever strolled around a football pitch. And he liked a drink by all accounts. PS: For anyone who has never seen it, Brazil V Italy at the '82 World Cup is one of the greatest games of football ever played.
