'Stuff' you used to take to games.

Featured Replies

I always feel a touch embarrassed to admit to this, maybe because it sounds a bit 'nerdy', but years ago before Iphones, smartphones, or in fact any mobile phones at all were invented ('82), I used to take a small AM radio, (wireless to Bluebeard!) along to games.

This was the age long before the mobile internet, so the only way of knowing other full time results, was a small portable radio.....err, (wireless).

I used to hold the radio so all around could hear the results if they wanted to & share the relief (or not), of our rivals efforts.

Often back then, the sound of that iconic music from radio 5, (which they still use today), prior to reading out the results, wafted around a hushed Fulham Broadway station.

I guess, even though not knowing it at the time,It was a bit of a communial moment amongst supporters.

Nowdays, everyone has their own phones, earpieces & instant updates.

But,is there any other 'stuff' you used to take to games?.

Come on,own up!.

For a while a sixpence, I found it on the way to a home game against Burnley circa early 70s, anyway we won I think it was 3-0.

A hole was drilled in this talisman with a ring and was worn on a chain, I think we won the next game but after that we we just as crap so never took it again.

By the way I still have it, it may be the reason we are now European Cup Holders and Champions.

Things I used to get at games and leave at games:-

Peanuts shells " PEANUTS

Torn up Golden Goal Tickets

Empty plastic cups after drinking a Watneys Brown ale in the Shed Tea bar " Honest I am over 18"

Away games always meant carrying at least one party-four of Tartan Bitter, one or two quarter bottles of Bell's whisky, and as many bottles of Newcastle Brown as my Crombie could cope with. I didn't really go in for weaponry as I preferred to use my fists and boots, but naturally that depended on who we were playing.

Home games....small pocket radio.....Away games....Lots of cans of beer..Thought i was cool walking around with my own "millwall" brick....Remember an horrific time when i went to norwich for a night match straight from work..As hundreds of us walked to the ground i was pulled over for a search...I had completely forgotten that in my bag i had a flick knife that i used at and for work..I was i suppose rightly knicked...Charged...Appeared in court and fined lots of dough for that era..

I perfected the art of a "Millwall brick " for protection purposes, they were fashionable for a time and kept you up to dates with events .

A few northern clubs liked to lob darts at the opposition fans, Middlesbrough in particular. Tottenham did this too, the c*nts. If you see footage of WHL in the mid 70's you'll notice the terracing in the Park Lane end is limited around the goal - this was due to an opposition goalkeeper getting hit in the head by a dart. They're so brave, those N17 lads - w*nkers!

Didn't Joe Corrigan get hit by a dart thrown from the Kop one year?

Not sure about that, but I remember Pat Jennings getting hit by a dart at Nottingham Forest. Can't remember who the keeper was who got hit at WHL, but there were photos in all the papers. I also remember a fan getting hit in the eye by a dart, the photos were graphic - but for the life of me I can't remember where that happened.

Paper to rip up and throw in air, to try and emulate Argentina World Cup 1978 Ticker Tape.

I failed miserably on 3 occasions I did so. I was only 11 though to be fair.

A Union Flag with CHELSEA across the middle, it made the news & papers during the Boro play off final trouble while hanging from the shed fence, i still have it as well though its seen better days, then a St George cross with CHELSEA SUTTON on it as seen on the fence along with me in Stockholm 98.

My late grandfather used to on occasions take rivets that he used in the shipyard.

These were to used in reply to any bottles being thrown at him at Old Firm games...

Kung Fu stars used by some. Not me.

Fists and boots if required.

Don't know about Kung fu stars but was up at wolves one year and some chelsea bloke had a pocket full of 50p coins all sharpened at the edges and was wizzing them in to the wolves fans.

Nothing to home games but to away games carrier bags full of cans of beer and a rolled up copy of the Telegraph. The newspaper was, upon disembarking from train, to make me look like a normal bod on his way to do some shopping or whatever. Amazingly it used to work, coppers are not that bright you know!

Ive just remembered pinching a British flag...Measured around 6 feet by 4 feet.....I put poles sewn into each end sos i could hold it upwards so everyone could see the CHELSEA FC written across the middle of it....The first match i attended with  this flag i was pulled aside politely by cossers...The main cop then ripped it open with his teeth and removed the poles..Handed me the rolled up flag and sent this young boy on his way...Circa 71?
